Whoever is Lord in Malacca has his hand on the throat of Venice. (Duarte Barbosa, 16th century writer and trader). This will be a short blog. I stopped off in Melaka on my way back from the Philippines (see my last blog). I flew back to KL from Manila, then made my way by bus down to Melaka. Melaka is Malaysia's oldest city and was the capital of the Sultanate of Malacca before the Portuguese invasion. It was a major port along the spice route. But in modern Melaka it is the Chinese influence that is the most noticeable. Over the centuries, the Chinese and local Malay cultures in Malacca have mixed, producing a completely unique society, the Baba-Nyona. This culture reached its height around the turn of the 20th century. After my short stay in ... read more

Today was another day of travel. We started off by waking up to pitch black in our cabin like room with no window, packed up all our gear which seemed to be scattered every where and hopped on to another bus to head down to Melaka. Unfortunately we were no longer VIP's, well in the bus' eyes so it was back to a normal 4 seat wide bus. We arrived at melaka's bus station at around midday where we split in to 3s to get taxi's to our 'rustic guest house' where we were spending the night. In KL the previous night we had met a guy who had told us places to go and things to see in the historic town. During the course of the 15minute taxi ride our driver seem to have pointed ... read more

Emily and I left the little island of Singapore on Saturday and headed into Malaysia. We learned to find out EXACTLY when the buses run, because by the time we made it to the bus terminal we had to wait a little over two hours for the next bus to Melaka. And of course, it started pouring, which seemed to be a theme for us in Sinapore. We were told the bus was about three hours...six hours later we arrived in Melaka. (Never trust the time they tell you - usually add a couple of hours to it and you'll be fine!) We had to get off the bus to go through immigration to get out of Singapore - then five mintues later when we had crossed "no man's land" - the stretch of water between ... read more

We left Singapore and took the EXPRESS bus bound for Melaka, Malaysia. Apparently it's only a 3 hour journey... But again, it turned out to be another long travel day. We showed up to catch the "hourly" bus...only to find that "hourly" in Singapore doesn't mean "every hour". It actually means "when we choose to leave". So we chilled out for a few hours, dodging another massive rainstorm and then boarded the bus. Oddly enough, it took 5 hours to get to Melaka - maybe it has something to to with the bus randomly stopping on the side of the highway to let passengers jump on and off. We found a guesthouse called Sunny's Inn Guesthouse. It was Lindsay's first "true" hostel experience in Asia. The place was alright with friendly, helpful staff - but the ... read more

We crossed the Straits of Johore on Number 2 Causeway and made our way up peninsular Malaysia on the Singapore - Melaka Express into the land of the Proton. The border formalities were all very straightforward and it was smiles all round, except for having to unload our packs from the bus to walk through customs before loading tham back on the bus! We weren't really sure what to expect on the Malaysia side, but there was a fairly impressive toll motorway, lots of red pantile houses that could have been lifted straight from the Spannish countryside and a lot of jungle / plantations. There have been lots of floods in Johore province of late, so there was also a lot of water. It took 4 hours to get to Melaka (or Malacca depending on your ... read more

Georgetown is an old colonial city with narrow streets on the island of Penang on the west coast of Malaysia and was our introduction into Malaysian life. The many races that make up Penang's population today have all influenced it in different ways, from the many curry shops and book sellers in Little India to the chinese restaurants and money changers in the Chinese Quarter with many other peoples mixed in. Shops are squeezed into narrow alleyways with a large open sided restaurant on the corner of each street. Georgetown also has a few sights including a decent museum detailing the history of the island as well as Fort Cornwallis used by the British and formerly the Portugese. Unfortunately it rained all day incessently while we were there, not really what I expected as the monsoon ... read more

We're back-dating a little now, (time has flown by since New Year)... So we left Kuala Lumpur - our plans of going to Borneo to trek amongst the orangutans didn't take shape. Flights were fully booked. So where to go? We had a week before our flight out of Singapore and we were sure we didn't want to go straight there. So it seemed a good idea to take a stop in Melaka - roughly half way between KL and Singapore. There's really not much to say. We planned on staying a couple of nights and stayed 4. It was a lovely, quiet little place with plenty of character and everything within walking distance. We stayed in Chinatown which was like taking a step back in time. Everyone going about their lives like we weren't there, ... read more

Adding on to my collection of Melaka was this family trip last Christmas. Ok, it took quite a while for me to pen this entry partly because most of my experiences were not new (read: old). And of course, so much had happened at work that I was simply too tired to update and maintain this blog space. Only managed to find time to do it this long lunar New Year holidays while clearing my annual leave. Basically, the experience was similar to previous trip partly because we stayed at the same hotel (Puri), ate the same food (laksa, cendol and Kenny Roasters chicken) and visited the same old places (Jonkers Street, St Paul's Hill etc). Update: another new shopping mall has opened recently which gave the old Mahkota Parade Shopping Mall a run for their ... read more

i was sitting on a bus in melaka trying to leave for kuala lumpur, the capital(sp). we came to a standstill due to some flooding in the area. i talked to a local about the distance to the bus station. through broken languages i thought it MIGHT not be TOO far. it was then i was debating wether or not to get off the bus and walk, thinking that it would be much faster. i kept debating despite being geared up and ready (almost) to go. finally, i decided to get off the bus. walking through knee deep water, VERY SLOWLY to make sure and avoid any of the numerous potholes (as i will sport some scars for quite a while after already having fallen through a drainage cover in cambodia). after i walked a few ... read more
