OK, so this is a bit late as we left Melaka a few days ago now, but we've been busy as ever! We had a bit of an eventful journey from Singapore: just as we left it began to rain so we got a bit wet on the way to the bus station. Not too much of a problem, but then the bus broke down 20 minutes from the bus station and it took 3 and a half hours for a replacement to turn up (so much for Singaporean ultra-effieciency), so our journey time ended being double what we expected! But on the plus side the other passengers on the bus were all very friendly and kept us informed of what was happening. When we finally got to Melaka in the evening, we headed for town ... read more

Melaka is Malaysia's most enigmatic city with a rich history of royal rule, Chinese influence and colonial domination that affected many of the vital ports on the Asian trade route. It is also known as the "gateway of Islam" into Malaysia - Indian muslim spice traders brought the religion, which is now adopted by the vast majority of Malays. The city's history is reflected in its architecture - a colourful array of Chinese, Indian and European colonial influence. We spent a day of culture and education in Melaka's colonial centre and scenic Chinatown on Tommy's "Walking Tour of Melaka". The colonial Melaka reflects the styles and ideas of the Dutch, Portuguese and the British, although each succeeding coloniser generally ransacked the preceding occupier's work. The Portuguese arrived first and thir presence is virtually all gone with ... read more

We've moved a little further south, approximately a 2 hour bus drive from Kuala Lumpur. The journey from KL was fascinating as we we were located directly behind the coach driver. We heard stories that the Malaysians were wild when it coms to driving, and the journey proved just that theory. We witnessed 3 cars, badly battered, lying in the ditch off the main road. Our fears were compounded by the torrential rain outpours, but the driver didn't seem too concerned as he weaved his way through the traffic. Much to our amusement, the rest of the passengers seemed oblivious and were sound asleep. Our hostel is located in the new part of the city, right beside a supermarket and cinema, where we watched the new Bond film. You can't seem to get normal popcorn over ... read more

Back to the beach this week, our first and only beach visit in Malaysia, on the island of Pangkor, off the country's Western coastline. We arrived as everyone else was leaving, a spot of genius really, as the population of KL descends like a plague of karaoke-singing locusts every weekend - so we arrived Sunday night! After a bit of bargaining we managed to get a beach bungalow with air-con and cable TV for a knock-down rate and proceeded to do... not a lot really! The beach was probably the best one we've seen so far, quieter and cleaner than the ones in Thailand and the sea was crystal clear and unbelievably warm. Despite a few showers on the first few days (we spent our time watching HBO in the room!) we spent our time swimming ... read more

The bus down from KL was hot and long, but apart from that Melaka was all kinds of wonderful! Showing up mid afternoon we caught the bus into town, the familiar sights guiding us once we jumped off the bus and headed over the bridge into the Old Chinatown area. We decided to get a room at the Sama Sama Guesthouse, a 300 year old plus Chinese house filled with plants and lazy cats. The owners are a friendly Malay guy and his eccentric Swiss German wife, but they make the place totally liveable, and the cute decorations make it all very homely. We were lucky as just after we'd got inside the heavens opened and all hell broke loose. Water cascaded down everywhere, and the central courtyard was like an outdoor shower on full pressure. ... read more

Now I know it's been a bit quiet on th old blog front of late but in all honesty folks, there hasn't been a lot to say about our last few days in Melaka. That's not to say we haven't been out and about because we've managed to do a lot more walking. It's just that we haven't been anywhere new that was really worth mentioning. After our day at the Butterfly and Reptile park, Glynn and I put our feet up and did very little indeed other than discover a new vegetarian restaurant just 2 minute's walk from our hostel, the Traveller's Lodge. Run by a very friendly Chinese family, the food was yummy and very cheap so it pretty much became our new lunchtime hangout after that. We did manage a particularly long trek ... read more

I met Marcus in Melaka. He peered through the dormroom doorway and, seeing he had company, came forward to offer a friendly handshake and cheesy grin. From that point on, the usual onslought of traveler queries ensued: - Where are you from? - When did you arrive here? - How long are you staying? - Where will you go next? - What would you recommend around here? - How much does that cost? - How long are you traveling for? - What did you think of the last place? - What will you do in the next place? - How will you get there? - How much does that cost? And so on, and so forth. As our well tailored and familar conversation progressed, we discovered - rather unsurprisingly - that we were both headed to ... read more

Yesterday was a relatively uneventful day as we just stayed in for most of the day to save a bit of cash. We did venture as far as the supermarket but got utterly drenched on the way back. It was light and dry when we arrived but by the time we left, it had been raining for a while and all the streets were waterlogged. Despite having umbrellas with us (God bless my Hello Kitty brolly!), we couldn't see the puddles in the road and our feet were soaking wet by the time we made it back to the hostel. We both felt a bit miserable after that, I can tell you! Today, we made up for not having been out much yesterday and boy did we walk a long, long way. We had spotted an ... read more

Donning our walking boots again, today we ventured out for a bit of a mammoth trek about town. We started off by picking up an excellent streetmap for 2 Ringgit from the Tourist Information Office and then took a closer look at the gaudy pinkness of the town square. In the centre of the little square is an obelisk mounted in a water fountain and it's by this fountain that you can find a couple of locals hanging around an old handsome cab. Not the most obvious place to keep a couple of massive boa constrictors and a fully grown iguana you might think but that's exactly what the pair of rather shady looking blokes were touting - a chance to have a photo with one of these great beasts. Pay 5 RM and you get ... read more
