Since we had a blast in Perhentian Island, we decided to continue our journey... this time to Malaysian heritage city, MELAKA! I was in my practical training in an architecture firm during this time and the rest were busy working too so we agreed on a weekend trip. We thought it would be nice to travel by car this time so Ain agreed to drove her BMW!! We were all excited on that Saturday morning and they arrived at my house around 8.00am. 25th December 2010 We had to wait for Teyha's arrival from Klang, so me, Ieien and Ain went to have our breakfast in Bangsar. Awhile later, Teyha arrived and we fetch her at the comuter station and we started our journey right away. It took us only 2 hours to get to Melaka. ... read more

“You go wait downstairs” said the customs official, offering nothing in the way of an explanation as to why Mehraneh had been led away to some inaccessible place elsewhere in the building. I was livid. I was worried. But, we’ll get to that later… The sun was low in the sky by the time we reached Melaka. We had breakfasted in Mersing after getting off the boat and later paused for a coconut and some other fresh fruit at the JB bus terminal. Three short jumps and some waiting around had made it another fairly long day of travel. Ravenous again by the time we reached the city’s main bus terminal, we resisted the urge to grab the first meal we could find and wisely waited until we actually got into town. A dirt cheap ride ... read more

I found Melaka a nice little place, but it felt like a couples place walking around chinatown looking at the small stalls. I stayed 3 nights as I had time to kill before Singapore, but if you arrive early you only need to stay about 1 maybe 2. You can cover the majority of the city in a few hours. At the weekends they do have some little shows going on, friday night they had some hair, make up and nail show. It was some college thing. Waited for like over an hour, watched the first bit, watched the dancers in the interval then left. I'd had enough by then. I stayed at teh Discovery hotel which was kind of choatic but alright. The night entertainment they have is truly terrible. Some guy was playing on ... read more

I actually went to Malacca twice this year. Both times with different bunch of friends. Anyway, I visited Malacca town's square, Jonker street, Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum, A Famosa Fortress, Butterfly park, Crocodile Farm and the shopping mall over there. Malacca's famous for its food, I know I definitely had a great time walking along Jonker street trying out their specialties food. I ate Malacca's famous chicken rice balls, Satay celup(it's something similar to a steamboat, but you dip it in some slightly spicy sauce instead of plain hot boiling water) and Nyonya food(it's friggin good). Ohh yeahh, I also went for Go-Karting and took a boat ride along Malacca River. Both trips to Malacca were awesome and I definitely recommend you to check these places :D PS: I wasn't allowed to take pics in ... read more

Two days in the life of the traveller can a) be a very long time indeed and b) bring about remarkable change. 2 Dec 2010 We have now both settled in to Melaka. It is fair to say that I am somewhat more taken with it than Gregg which is in no small part due to the homeliness of Café 1511’s guest accommodation. It is just unbelievably peaceful here. There is a water feature in the middle of the building and the staff always stop to say hello and give us a smile. The room that we are staying in is small but spotless and well furnished and the shared bathrooms, although a walk down the corridor away, are also beautiful and immaculate. We had planned to have a bit of a lie in this morning ... read more

30th November 2010 After a couple of lazy mornings getting up early to make our bus was not pleasant. The alarm sounded at 6:30am and although I got up swiftly and got in the shower, I can’t say that I was particularly fond of that alarm! Lou did pretty well considering how bad she is in the morning, and as we had done the packing bar the minimum washing essential items the night before things moved swiftly. We had planned a schedule to leave the hut by 7:00 and checking the watch as we walked away we were bang on target, a minor miracle it has to be said. The short walk in the early morning light to the bus stop was uneventful, and very peaceful - I for one was slightly sorry to be ... read more

Once we arrived at the bus station outside Melaka, we took a city bus into the city proper and found our hotel, Traveller's Lodge where we paid 35RM for a fan room with a balcony and a great kitchen/common room. We grab some dinner at a nearby mall food court where we get delicious spicy beef soup. The following morning, after a late sleep-in, we wander around the city and see more colonial buildings. This place was invaded by the Dutch and so most of the buildings were in that style and painted red. The souvenirs lining the street were more-or-less crappy and we are starting to get tired of the same colonial type buildings in every city here. We continue on to Chinatown to check out more old buildings, a mosque, and great Chinese temple, ... read more

Hi All, long time that I haven't written. I haven't really found an internet cafe that was fast enough to upload my pictures. Yesterday I have left Malaysia after over a month and it was a little hard as I really liked it. The first place I'm staying in is Songkhla, Thailand as my sister is arriving in Hat Yai on Friday. I'm really looking forward to see Sarah again after almost 4 month. Hat Yai was recently flooded and it's not a nice place to stay right now. So we decided to move on quickly to the islands in the south west of Thailand. Today I will upload some pics from Malacca. That's in the south west of Malaysia and is a very nice little town with lot's of history. I've met Chloe there (a ... read more

Welcome to part 11/12 of the blog. continued from cracker in melaka ... The morning after the hindu procession i awoke to find Reuben and Livia had backed their bags and left for Cherating. After moving into a single room across the hall I went for some breakfast at the Voyage cafe before head to Sama Sama to plan my day. Realising i didn't actually have anything to do i decided to hang out with john for a while, read my book and meet some of the other people staying in the guesthouse. The owner of Sama Sama also owns Voyage cafe and Voyage guesthouse on the same road, theres a feeling it's all one big family and guests from all 3 places are always moving between them to hang out, chat or play pool.
