Well, that's it. I'm officially the last of the language school gaijins in Japan. Well, not all the language school gaijins, that would be a bold, ridiculous statement to make considering how many foreigners come here to study, but I am the last one out of my group of friends I went to school with when I first arrived. The second last to depart these fine shores is Italian Jane from Germany. We met up at Mysterious in Shinjuku to have a few drinks and a massive catch up as I haven't seen her since she flew to South Korea to get her Japanese visa re-issued. It was soooooo much fun to see her, I found out to my absolute joy that all the frustrations I'd been going through about 2 weeks ago was almost identically ... read more

Wow 100 days in Japan already? It's hard to believe my trips more than half over and I still haven't gotten past the first week in my "Learn to speak Japanese in 6 weeks" do it yourself at home course I got 6 months ago and have been skipping on my I Pod every time it comes up on shuffle. Anyway - 100 days, it's quite the landmark for me so I decided a small celebration was in order and coerced Phoebe into accepting an ice cream date day with me. The first thing you should know about Japanese ice cream is it comes in wonderful flavours and there are various types. You can get Ice Cream, Soft Cream, Gelato, Flavoured Ice and some others I wouldn't know what to call. I decided to start early, ... read more

Yay! I saw Haruka today! Haruka's one of my japanese friends from Sydney who's back in Tokyo for a few months. We met up a few weeks ago for okinamiyaki in Shinjuku, got lost in the rain for twenty minutes looking for the restaurant and ended up in an old style japanese yakitori (skewer/kebob type things) bar I'd found previously but had been to scared to go into by myself. The yakitori bar only had ten chairs, most of which were occupied with old japanese man getting pissed on saki in the middle of the day on a Monday. It was great, but we decided this time we'd go for something a little bit more respectable. So once again we met in the rain. Not drizzle, but pouring, bucketing weather. Navigating our way through the puddles ... read more

Konnichiwa - Hello in Japanese! So, we're at our first stop in Tokyo. So far so good! The apartments we are staying in are amazing - such good value for what we paid and so many cool gadgets (much to Ben's joy!) and electrical goods that actually work efficiently! We are making the most of this as the rest of our trip will be hostel galore. Tokyo is just what I imagined really - in a good way - lots of skyscraper buildings, big bright neon signs, and just very busy and crazy! There are loads of amusement arcades everywhere...I had to drag Ben away from Mario Kart 2 yesterday!! We've been on the Metro a few times - so much cleaner and spacious than the London tube, and cheaper too (not difficult though!) The Japanese ... read more

Email from Sanae yesterday: Rainy Season has begun!! Japan Weather Forecast announced today! Wow!! Wow indeed Sanae my love. All the more reason for me to buy a raincoat. Well, Rainy season truly has started, from the second I got Sanaes email it started pissing down and hasn't stopped. It's making me feel a bit blue and homesick being cooped up inside so I'm going to write a blog about why Rainy Season is going to be fun for the entire month of June. Oh god. A whole month. Anyway. Well I've just discovered it's not easy writing a list of reasons why rainy season is going to be fun so I'm now asking people for suggestions on how to pass away the rainy season so I don't get bed sores or damage my eyes from ... read more

What a foreign experience to 'enjoy' 24 hours of rain! It started on Friday evening when I headed out for a self-guided tour of Shinjuku, the CBD location of my accommodation. Tokyo need not be expensive, I am staying in a brand new 4 star hotel for $85 a night!! Anyway I had a great meal at a tempura restaurant then got lost on my walk but found my way back home eventually in the driving rain. Saturday I was up at 5.30am to go to the Tsukiji fish market, that handles 18% of all the world's fish. The idea is to have a fresh sushi breakfast but as it was wet and about 12c I had katsu don (crumbed pork cutlet on rice) instead. Then to the Senso Ji shrine in the Matabachi (old Tokyo) ... read more

There's a typhoon approaching Japan. I've never been in a typhoon before, so I'm not really sure what to expect, but if the build up to it is anything to go by then we're not in for a pleasant few days. So far it seems to involves a lot of rain, and when I asked Richard about it on the way to the kindergarten today he replied "This rain nothing, a typhoon is basically a f*ckload of water everywhere, and no way to escape it" Sounds Fun. So after a tiring morning of trying to tire out my classes with excercise (Have you ever hopped the entire alphabet out? I have) there was only one thing for it. Karaoke with the gaijins. And a hip hop lesson for dessert. I met up with Cecilia, Christine, Bernardo, ... read more

Big lights, big city. Hello Tokyo! Tokyo is huge and seems to have lots of different centres but getting around on the extensive rail and subway system is easy. Finding a specific place, however, can be a bit of a nightmare because lots of the streets don't seem to have names - we found it better to just turn up in an area and wander around taking it all in. We stayed in the Shinjuku area, close to the busiest railway station in the world and around the corner from the Park Hyatt Hotel which featured in Lost in Translation, which was very central and convenient for all the sights. Most of the time we stayed in a simple hotel but for one night only we checked into a 'pod' hotel which was a bit like ... read more

Up early(ish) considering the jet lag and out for a full day in Tokyo. All started very well with some nice coffee and toast in the train station before heading to Shinjuku. Sarah was very keen to get up a major building to get a feel for the city so we headed straight for the metropolitan building for some pretty awesome and free views from the 42nd floor. Quite difficult to conceive of a city that is so highrise and so sprawled at the same time, we had a competition about how many people live in the area but at 6, 12 and 15 million I have the feeling that we are all undercalling it by quite a significant margin. From the towers we headed across to Shinjuku goyen which a large park famed for ... read more

After we got off our bus at the station at Shinjuku, we still had to try to find Ryan somewhere in this huge city. He had called Michael from a public phone when he arrived and told us he would be at the McDonald's down the street waiting for us. We found the McDonald's, but Ryan wasn't there! So we kept looking around and came back to the McDonald's 3 times...people started giving us strange looks! So we decided he wasn't there and started walking towards the station again, and guess who's sitting on the steps on the side of the station building? IT'S RYAN!! He looked so lonely sitting on the steps with his huge backpack looking at a huge map of Tokyo. Since it was still early, we decided to try and catch the ... read more
