Let me explain. There's a few reasons for our title, none of which mean we didn't enjoy our time in Japan. We enjoyed it immensely. We did find, however, that we had a bit more trouble communicating while we were in this country than we have had in other countries on our trip. First of all, on a purely logistic basis -- our mobiles and Blackberrys didn't work in Japan! Plus, Ted's laptop died and he had to have it sent back to the Sony factory to be fixed, so we didn't have his laptop for our time in Japan. So, communication with our life back in the US was limited to the time we could get on our sons' laptops -- Tyler was very generous with his, I should add. Secondly, we had a number ... read more

Once upon a time, right in the middle of an Aussie Summer, Linda (aka Helen) and Jodes (aka Monika) decided to pursue a professional snowboarding career in Japan. As you do when you've only had 6 hours of experience on a snowboard. (We didn't say it was a GOOD decision!) Here is the story of our journey... Our two week grand tour of Japan started off relatively smoothly - perhaps a little unusual for Linda and I! Despite the lady at check-in getting extremely agitated about us having only an E-ticket and no physical ticket with a particularly crucial number on it that she just had to have to make it through her day, we made it onto the flight. We were somewhat amused that noone else at any other airport throughout our trip seemed to ... read more

I slept in today as the jetlag seemed to be effecting me a lot last night and that resulted in badly disturbed sleep patterns. After finally waking up I decided to visit some other districts of Tokyo. I visited Akasaka, Ueno, Ginza, Shinjuku and Roppongi. I visited the electronics stores in Shinjuku and also went to the 52nd floor of Mori Tower for a 360-degrees view of Tokyo then visited the art museum on the 52nd and 53rd floor of the same building. ... read more

Winter vacation got off to a shaky start. After twiddling my thumbs and counting down the minutes Monday following our closing ceremonies at school, I rushed home to change and grab my pack. Downtown Matsuyama I met my fellow English teachers and walked to Niccori, a buffet style restaraunt near Okkaido. We had reservations for a Christmas dinner. To my surprise, the cost was all you can eat AND all you can drink. I hadn't planned on that one. Needless to say, towards the end of the meal I checked my cell phone to see the time had flown by. And I now had only 10 minutes to make my overnight bus to Tokyo! AAHHHHHHH!!! Panic! I quickly gathered my things and paid my bill, asking them to call a taxi. The waiter told me (in ... read more

On our flight to Japan we could hardly believe that we had been away for 3 months already and were embarking on the next stage of our trip! We arrived in Osaka late at night and had to quickly get to grips with the Japanese train system, not as easy as you would think, especially with bags the size of Russia on our backs, but also the fact that our Japanese rail passes were apparently out of date before we even had a chance to use them…ooops! After some great blagging skills we managed to get on our way. The bullet trains in Japan are awesome and give Virgin trains a run for their money as they are on time, clean and so so fast! Our first night in Japan was spent at one of the ... read more

Well, still no news on the apartment…. Maybe someday! In the meantime, I thought I would share some more observations with you all. Every time we go out, it seems we find something new to tell you about. I have taken to carrying a notepad in my purse so I can jot down notes to share with all of you. So, in no particular order, some observations from my notes: Last Saturday, Marc and I went out exploring on the subway. We were coming down an escalator and saw the subway car was there. Not wanting to wait for the next one, we dashed (not ran… you NEVER run) to get onto the last car. As we were “dashing” the subway guard / information person was saying something to us. (In Japanese of course) We were ... read more

Hi there everyone! Thank you all for the nice, sweet comments about the blog and all the messages. It really means a lot to both me and Marc. I hope you will forgive me if this bores you, but I am going to respond to a few people quick. Karen - I know you want pictures. I actually did take some of the two apartments. Marc and I just went to down load the pictures and found that the necessary card reader is not is the camera bag. That means that it got shipped with everything else and we won’t have it for a while yet. Consequently, you will have to wait a while longer. I promise I will post pictures just as soon as possible. Anne - I was ROFLOL when I read about your ... read more

Its very wet in Kyoto which is fine to be honest, weve havent stopped untill now. So we thought get a bit of blogging done, why not! Our first 5 mins inTokyo showed us what we were in for. The train arrived at the terminal preparing for its return to the center. As we waited on the platform while the train was being cleaned every seat on the train auto turned 180 degrees to face the front. As we found out the Japs are very different in many ways, I guess you need to be with 110 million people in the country the size of the uk. People with face masks in case of flu to women wearing hot pants with stockings ( I had to adjust the old trouser department on more than one occasion)!! ... read more

I am sorry I haven’t posted an entry lately… We’ve just been busy finding our way around Tokyo a bit. But… more about that all later… today I am going to tell you all about what it is like to find a place to live in Tokyo. To put it in one word… UGH! In many ways, this is no different from looking for a place to live back home in the states. There are always so many things to consider, and it all becomes a balancing act of the things that are most important and trying to get as many of them as possible in one home. Here, there are just a few more “monkey wrenches” to make the process even more fun!! Before we had even arrived, Marc had done a lot of research ... read more
