Dobry den!Mam za sebou dalsi den v metropole.Kedze som v utorok nestihol navstevu cisarskych zahrad, siel som tam hned rano.

I actually did not notice the huge snowflakes profusely coming down until I was half through my breakfast at a small lounge on the sixth floor of my hotel. My cue came from other guests who kept glancing in the direction of the windows… A heavy snowstorm is not a common sight in Tokyo, but having one just after a relatively warm day the previous day was really out of the realm of possibilities. Seeing the streets and trees in the park below already blanketed with a couple of inches of the white stuff gave me an immediate excuse to postpone my final packing for my 4:30 PM flight to Atlanta and go immediately out to hunt for pictures. It was at this point that another series of thoughts crossed my mind in rapid succession: If ... read more

We went to Shinjuku tonight to get our JR tickets and meet up with Yasu. It was really good to see him again, he's hardly changed at all. Problems with getting the tickets. My visa card expired yesterday, the emergency Mastercard didn't work for some reason, useless bloody thing it is... and I could only get ¥20,000 out of Akira's account. Had I not transferred a $1000 from it earlier today into our other account it would have had enough, what brilliant timing.... read more

Having arrived in Shimonseki from China you are left in no doubt that you have moved from one country to anther, Chinese cites generally have a fairly lacks approach to rubbish there are many people employed as street cleaners however these are needed as the common approach to rubbish is to drop it in the street and hope someone else picks it up. Not so in Japan streets are all slightly worryingly immaculate another new trend was the re discovery of the weekend. In China shops are almost universally open 7 days a week however our first day in Japan was a Sunday and the vast majority of the shops where closed. We did manage to activate the rail pass we got in Qingdao so we could use it to get to Tokyo. Rail travel in ... read more

Flying into the future. Day1 I’ve been on the flight for 5 hours anxiously awaiting my new destination. Singapore Airlines is by far the best airline company I have ever used. The alcohol is free flowing the meals are decent and the staff caters to your every need. I’m flying economy but I feel like I’m in first class. We have about 7 more hours to go. We are currently flying over Anchorage and the sun is setting. The plane ride is surprisingly beautiful when we arrive in Japan we will be a day ahead which is a little weird. I’m worried about the weather; Cali girls are not use to the cold weather. I’m upset that I can’t wear my flip-flops lol. Well my computer is going to die I will write more after my ... read more

The Bullet train ride up from Kyoto to Tokyo was like ticking off one of the final boxes of things I wanted to do on this trip. The Nosomi express was incredible fun, with the scenery of a two and a half hour trip flashing past the windows like a video screen on fast forward. My mate Dan once said that the Dutch double-decker trains were like the Rolls-Royce of locomotives - debatable - but if thats true, then this Japanese Shinkansen is a Lambourgini Diablo. The front of it looks like a muscle-bound and ripped giant metallic projectile on rails. In saying that, Germany's ICE Train remains in first place for me. It's outside has a painjob like Face's Corvette in the A-Team while the sleek interior looks as if it's been designed and hand ... read more

So today got up a little later 7am did the breaky banquet (I am eating sooo much) Love the grilled smoked salmon and the grilled fish today ! Got myself an all day access all areas rail ticket. and off I popped to Shinjuku Station apparently the amount of people passing through this station is equivilant to the entire population of canada, All I can say is I think canada had a bank holiday today, ok it was 9.15 by the time i got there but my local station Shinagawa was a hell of a lot busier that. Dead funny, to get to ... read more

I feel a little more settled now. I've discovered that: 1) although japanese kids dress weird clothes and have funky hair (really blond spiky long hair and tight tight pants, these are the boys), they're all weird in the exact same ways 2) no matter how ultra modern the streets look and how many neon signs are crammed in a row stretching way way up into the starless sky, there is a Shinto Shrine not far away, tucked in a quiet alleyway 3) There are fewer english speaking people around than in vietnam or cambodia or bolivia or peru... but... 4) if you just speak english in a japanese accent you will be understood. it's called katakana, and it takes care of nouns (intonetto = internet, hotto kohwee = hot coffee, hoteru = hotel, beeru = ... read more

First of all, let me just express my gratitude for having found an internet place. It wasn't easy (just like how the ' is a very difficult key to find on the keyboards here) I'm actually in a Manga Cafe now, the only place where you can get web access. They're few and far apart. And when you find them on the map, and show up at that intersection, there are 100 other neon signs flashing in your face, oh yeah and most things are not in english. And that's pretty much tokyo in a nutshell, kinda like Times Square on steroids, any direction you look, there are thousands of things to see and catch your attention. After walking around the city for just a few hours I found myself needing to sit down and just ... read more
