Konnichiwa - Hello in Japanese!

So, we're at our first stop in Tokyo. So far so good! The apartments we are staying in are amazing - such good value for what we paid and so many cool gadgets (much to Ben's joy!) and electrical goods that actually work efficiently! We are making the most of this as the rest of our trip will be hostel galore.

Tokyo is just what I imagined really - in a good way - lots of skyscraper buildings, big bright neon signs, and just very busy and crazy! There are loads of amusement arcades everywhere...I had to drag Ben away from Mario Kart 2 yesterday!! We've been on the Metro a few times - so much cleaner and spacious than the London tube, and cheaper too (not difficult though!)

The Japanese seem to be really friendly people, and we're trying to learn a few words to show some respect! We've got hello and thank you down so far, so that's a start!

Today we went to a place called Ueno, which has a huge park with lots of things to do. We went on a pedalo boat on a lake and then

stumbled across a zoo. I can't say no to a zoo at the best of times, but when we read that this one had a Giant Panda and a Polar Bear ie 2 things we've never seen before, we had to go in!! It was surreal seeing the polar bears as you only really see them on telly in the Antartic, (or in the odd episode of Lost!!!), so seeing them in front of our eyes in 27c heat was bizarre.

We saved the Panda til last and after about a 2.5 hour build up, and passing the smaller, less interesting red Panda's, we got to the Panda home to find a sign saying 'The Great Panda died on 30th April 2008'. Great! Cheers for mentioning that when we went to buy our tickets!!! Oh well, it was still worth it as we did see lots of creatures you wouldn't see in Colchester Zoo!!!

Not sure what we're doing tomorrow....I want to see the Harajuku girls in their crazy weird fashions, posing on the streets, but I'll have a little chat with Ben, see what he thinks!!

Lots of love
