Everyone knows our typical New Year's celebration and ritual. We go out, to dinner or a party, have a few glasses of champagne, and wish each other a Happy New Year as the ball drops at Times Square in NYC. But what about the rest of the world (thanks to Fodor's)? But first, a question: Which country celebrates the New Year first? Answer below** In Spain, they celebrate the Twelve Grapes of Luck. Eat 12 grapes, one for each month of the year for good luck and prosperity. But you must eat one grape at each strike of midnight!. The tradition goes back to 1909, and I would not be averse to washing it down with a glass of bubbly. Wear colorful undies in Brazil, Mexico, Bolivia, or anywhere in Latin America. Tradition says red brings ... read more

If it's traditional Japanese culture you're after, then Kyoto is a must-visit. Packed with temples, there were so many listed in the Lonely Planet that I was templed-out just reading about them. Therefore my first job after arriving in Kyoto was to narrow down the list of which temples to visit. To give some insight into this process, I'll describe what I actually do every time I arrive in a city and plan a tour of the sights. Generally I will create my own walking tour connecting all the sights of interest, so that I get to see a bit of normal life in the city in between. But when a city has as many sights and is as big as Kyoto, I create multiple walking tours of different areas where sights are clustered. It is ... read more

Sunday, 17th Sep 2017 Kyoto >> Nagoya (147.6km, 36 mins, 5,590 Yen) My last itinerary for the day before returning to Nagoya was a quick trip to the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Central Kyoto. Located just 5 minutes away at Inari Station (via JR Nara line), the temple is clearly evident as soon as I made my way from the train station. Fronted by the bright and imposing Torii Gate at the entrance, the beautiful shrine is clearly a number one hot spot in Kyoto judging by the number of visitors and worshipers she received on a typhoon-proned afternoon. I didn't linger long enough at the temple grounds nor stopped by at any of the souvenir stalls as I made my way towards the trail leading to the "Thousand of Torii Gates". There was an immediate ... read more

Sunday, 17th September 2017 Himeji >> Kyoto (130.7km, 43 mins, 5,480 Yen) My afternoon itinerary involved a brief stopover at the former imperial capital of Kyoto located halfway between Himeji and Nagoya. Visiting Kyoto was a last minute decision, firmed up a few days before my trip to Japan. Since I was already holding on to the Japan Rail Pass, it made sense to cover a bit more ground as time was on my side. After 43 minutes on the train from Himeji, I arrived at Kyoto Station at a good time (12.57pm). The weather was perfect this afternoon with some light breeze that cooled the temperatures a bit. From the massive Kyoto Station, I found my way to Arashiyama (Saga Arashiyama Station) via the JR Sagano Line. Arashiyama is an area around the western outskirts ... read more

Kyoto Tower... read more

Vacations, like sunsets, were designed to be temporary. A continuously lit neon sky, filled with rainbow colors from end to end, certainly creates emotions too intense for endless consumption. While no gourmand refuses a piece of rich, creamy chocolate at the end of a delicious meal, even the most dedicated sweet lover would assuredly tire of an endless diet of cocoa flavored goodness. Like a spoiled debutante complaining about not having enough closet space for her shoe collection or an overindulged teen bemoaning his sore fingers after playing video games all day, there is an obvious danger in complaining about being on endless vacation. No one really wants to hear your lament. If only we all had such troubles. However, I have to admit that as we begin our 7th year of continuous travel, we do ... read more

This is a quick blog about travel insurance companies and the caution you must take in committing to any travel insurance purchase. Japan, May, 2017 one of my tour members fell breaking her hip. she was rushed to a hospital in Kyoto and the nightmare began with her travel insurance company. The company she paid for the insurance outsourced it to another to execute the claim. It took 24 hours and an act of God to get them to provide the air ambulance she needed to return to the USA. At first they wanted her to pay the $130,000 to fly back. She had paid for a $1,000,000.00 policy for repatriation. Not only was this woman incapable of handling the "but clauses" of this policy, but she was in pain from the injury, blurry in her ... read more
