So, I headed off to Kyoto... not alone as planned, but with Jim because he was going anyway and seemed open to checking out the places I wanted to see. So I was basically in charge. We got on the train at Hirakata-shi, off at Kyoto Shijo Station. From there, it's a good long walk (30 mins?) to Mibu-dera, the first stop on my itinerary. Mibu-dera is the Buddhist temple where the Shinsengumi trained during the Bakumatsu (Revolution). The Shinsengumi were basically a special force charged with maintaining peace and putting down the Isshin rebels. A few of them are buried at Mibu, including the leader, Kondo Isami. We found the temple without too much difficulty, and I must say, I like it a lot! The grounds are small but very well maintained and the temple ... read more

We decided to go to Kyoto on Thursday to prepare ourselves for the "official" tour on Friday. It ended up being only Jim, Chris and myself, and we set out pretty late. We did manage to get to the Kyoto Museum before it closed, which was nice but kind of lacking. I thought they would have more Bakumatsu stuff, but I didn't really see any at all. I did learn they once had a Shinsengumi exhibit, which made me very jealous! After that we walked around the area near Sanjo and eventually made it up to around the Imperial Palace, which was of course closed and dark. The grounds are HUGE, though! Then we went to Marutamachi and headed home. Friday was supposed to be the tour, but we decided to go it alone by train ... read more

Have spent the last 3 nights in Kyoto. First night was brutal. Slept in a Japanese room on these mats on the floor. Too hot to do anything but eat ice cream. Found this great place today where they allow kids to gamble. Best place so far. Spent the whole day there.... read more

A GIGANTIC KONICHIWA EVERYONE! First off, again with the Japanese keyboards...I had this blog pretty much 3/4 of the way done...I hit some button...and POOF my entire entry disappeared. No sweat. Things have been crazy busy for me over the last week. Pretty much non^stop from the moment we landed to right now. I hope you all enjoy this blog. Just a side not, I have taken a ton of pictures and it is tough to try and figure out which ones capture what I am writing about. So, I am going to do my best with these...hopefully they get the point across. Ok...where to begin? Hmmmm...how about the begining! When I last blogged, Brent and I were heading to Harajuku...famous for its angst-ridden teens, the "Harajuku Girls". If anyone has seen Gwen Stefani (No Doubt ... read more

Kyoto November was a fine, if not somewhat cooler, month. How cool was it? Well, I had to wear a sweater to school. Crazy, I know. But while I had to be inconvenienced by digging the sweaters out from the wardrobe, at least those obnoxious typhoons left us alone, which was welcome relief to those living in the worst hit areas of the recent earthquakes. Most days were sunny and clear with just a hint of a chill in the early morning and late evening. Throughout November, the leaves turned a brilliant shade of red unlike any I’ve experienced in Edmonton, likely due to the fact that autumn lasts all of three days in Edmonton before the harshness of winter deprives the trees of their foliage. Here in Japan, however, the pleasant fall season allowed the ... read more

I went to Japan with a buddy named Eugene in July of 2004 (I transferred to I.R.R. for several months - yes, I milked it). I was at a Business Language program in Korea and decided to fly out to Japan with P-U-gene after meeting him from the kiddie program. Eugene was a kid prodigy graduating from college at 19 years old. He went to Washington State University (in Seattle), where I incidentally am at right now, visiting over the memorial day holiday. Our itenary included Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo. We ended up checking out cameras but nonetheless, I didn't buy one, nor did I have the presence of mind to take advantage of any of the photo ops. The following pictures come from his gallery of photos... ... read more

There and back again. This time the “there” included three of the most famous cities of Japan, Kobe, a modern city by the sea, Osaka, a cosmopolitan wonderland, and the cultural heartland of the Japanese nation, Kyoto. It felt good to leave my farming village and head for the great world beyond, if only for the weekend. I admit that I was a bit envious of those English teachers who dwell in the cities. Theirs may not be the town where everyone knows your name, but surely the youth and vitality of twenty-something Japanese provide a certain je ne sais quoi to their lives that I am sorely lacking. In Osaka, I got lost. Those of you who are aware of my notoriously awful sense of direction wouldn’t be surprised by that statement, of course. ... read more

In 2001, my friend and I ventured out to Kyoto. We didn't do much planning during that trip as far as I can remember, but we weren't really worried either. My cousin had a japanese friend that was able to take us around and guide us a bit. I didn't really use any tour books or anything like that, and frankly, didn't really feel the need for them at the time either. Kyoto was beautiful, even in the winter time when most places are closed for holidays. Hi-light of the trip, we tried going to a Geisha house, and promptly got rejected by a cute geisha in training. "No, sorry... house for patron only. You, nooo." ... read more
