After a heavy day I was up for some hiking. So I took the bike ( for free :D ) as a true Dutch person should to the island. The weather wasn't all that nice but it was warm enough for a shirt, so I'm content with that. I biked through the small town up to the famous 'floating' torii gate. Floating because in high tide the torii gate appears to be floating. Anyway, it was a nice view but meh. I checked out a few temples but they looked far too basic to go in. So I went for a coffee. Best coffe I have had in Japan so far and the staff was very nice. After that I went for some homemade ice cream, flavors: green tea and black sesame. The black sesame was ... read more

Hiroshima city. Okay so, I went to the castle and had okonomiyaki which was really good as well but the focus is the atomic bomb. Well known for the first ever atomic bomb target in the world. The city completely demolished after the detonation of "Little Boy". I began my day by going to the atomic bomb dome. One of the few remaining buildings after the bombing. Of course, as expected, an insane amount of tourists, which in my opinion SUCKS. But hey, it is high season so fuck it. After that I made my way to the victim memorial museum. Intrigued by the design of the museum and the memorial hall, I decided to look at some photo's and videos. There is a huge accessable archive of victims sharing their story and photographs. I was ... read more

Hello again, Arrived in miyajima 2 days ago and it is wonderfull. It is a small place southwest of hiroshima with an island a little off the coast. I will explore Hiroshima and the island later on during my stay because for now I have the JR west pass. I visited Himeji castle yesterday which was amazing. It is a huge complex with walls all around and a lot of info on the history of feudal Japanese warfare, it was a very fun and learning experience. Today I went to kobe which was even better. Just behind the station there is a hiking trail with beautiful waterfalls. I encountered a little bridge and at the end was a sign with kanji ( japanese written language ) on it. Not knowing what it said I thought: " ... read more

First things first, breakfast. We headed to Little Mermaid, which is located next to the south exit of Hiroshima station. I had seen the Little Mermaid chain in different place s I have visited in Japan, but had never been in before. This place had a bigger seating area, than Hearth Brown, but the bakery section seemed more cramped. We went for four things again today. We each choose a sweet and a savoury item, as it had worked out well yesterday. We went for a small baguette filled with potato and bacon, think posh chip butty, which was nice as the bread was crunchy but not hard. We also had a bread cup kind of thing filled with chicken and broccoli, a jam and cream bun, and a layered pastry block filled with red bean. ... read more

We headed to the station ready for some breakfast. We went to Hearth Brown, a bakery located past the ticket gates. There was so much food to choose from, we had a bit of a tough time trying to decide what to eat for breakfast. The best thing about travelling with others, you can order more stuff and share it, getting to try more deliciousness. We ended up with a prawn gratin on toast, calzone pizza, a bread cube filled with red beans, and an apple Danish. All of it was scrummy and we washed it down with nice, hot coffee. The bakery has a nice seating area, which wasn't too busy. We were heading to Miyajima, which means Shrine Island in Japanese. I was really excited to visit, as it is somewhere I have wanted ... read more

Incheon was so busy, there were just bodies everywhere. I swear this place gets busier every holiday. I did my self check-in and then joined the extremely long line at the baggage drop. After that I had to join the ridiculously long queue for security and immigration. That took me forever to get through, by the time I got to my gate, they were about to start boarding. I had a seat right at the back of the plane. It had been a while since I flew on a proper airline, so I enjoyed having a comfy seat with some leg room and a feed. We got a small, but nice meal of beef and vegetables over rice. I was gutted that Asiana didn't offer any hot drinks, only water, I was gagging for a brew. The ... read more

Wednesday 30th September 2015 An unforgettable experience in Hiroshima is a visit to the Peace Museum, which documents the devastation caused to the area by the atomic bomb dropped on 6th August 1945. We opted to take an audio tour of the exhibition that proved to be both insightful and harrowing in equal measure. We walked through the museum taking in the sights of kids bicycles, lunch boxes, uniforms and parts of buildings devastated by the blast. It was a very moving experience, shattered by the influx of the whole of year 8 of Hiroshima's version of Grange Hill. Hundreds of children running through the museum shouting and laughing. Nevertheless, its one of the must see things whilst in Hiroshima and a memory that will stick for a long time. We then headed outside into the ... read more

After Fukuoka, I took the 5h bus eastwards towards Hiroshima, and I hadn't planned it at all, but after I arrived I found out I was in town just in time for the A-bomb memorial week, and it would turn out to be a particularly poignant and memorable visit to the city. The city of Hiroshima will perhaps always been remembered for that one tragic morning at 8.15 a.m. on August 6th 1945, when the world saw for the very first time the horrendous power of the atomic bomb. In one fell swoop, virtually the entire city within a few kilometres of the hypocentre of the explosion was destroyed, and tens of thousands of people killed instantly, or in the immediate aftermath. And that excludes the many thousands more who would succumb to their gruesome injuries ... read more
