My last blog was written while I was contemplating going home after feeling down and a bit bored with all the travelling that I have been doing. One of the main things that a lot of people picked up on is the fact that I couldn't get a SIM card for my iPhone and I thank the people who replied to the blog telling me where I should get one from but in all fairness I realised that I was getting too addicted to my phone and I can really survive without it. However there seems to be a constant routine that you stay in one place for 3 or 4 days, run around the area trying to take in as much as you can, trying to strike up conversations with new strangers in your hostel, ... read more

Konnichiwa!! Yeah, I made it to Japan! Another country I had high on my list and I enjoyed the 2.5 weeks I spent there. A beautiful country with nice people, not as expensive as I thought it would be (thanks to the stronger US Dollar) and very clean! Except for travelling within the city area, I did not use the train because it’s too expensive. I used only buses to travel between cities instead. The Japanese Rail Pass, often bought by many visitors, wasn’t an option because you’d have to rush between cities otherwise it’s not worth it. The Japanese food in general was ok. They eat a lot of seafood and I’m not a fan of it due to allergies. The people I encountered were all friendly, educated and very well-mannered. I was impressed by ... read more

Other than Tokyo, Hiroshima was my favorite place I visited in Japan. It's a small, unassuming city with plenty of river walks and tasty food, and its history is ubiquitous and palpable. Anyone visiting here should absolutely read John Hershey's novel Hiroshima. It was published just a year after the bombing and it brilliantly laces together the lives of several survivors who basically never should have survived the blast. After visiting the museum, these people weren't just in the blast zone where some survived- they were in the area where practically no one survived (beyond a few days). Reading the novel ahead of time was so much more valuable than just reading the descriptions on the historical landmarks; actually, it enhanced my understanding of the landmarks around the city that tell brief stories about the condition ... read more

I woke up early to shower before heading on to my next couple cities (yes, I'm ramping up the travel goals now that the guys are gone - I took it easy on them). Unfortunately, I had forgotten to get a towel the night before and the office wasn't open until 8am (a problem since I wanted to catch the 8:20am train out). I didn't want to use the towel I brought and have to carry it around wet, so I skipped it. I hope I didn't smell too bad! I hopped on the bullet train over to Kobe. Besides good beef, Kobe doesn't have a whole lot for Western tourists. Many Japanese people come because the city has a big Western influence and go tour Western style homes and eat at those type of restaurants. ... read more

Our first day in Hiroshima was quite relaxed. Apart from having a stroll around the immediate area, we took it quite slow. One highlight of the day however was having okonomiyaki for dinner. This was unlike any other okonomiyaki previously mentioned. The portion sizes were big and we in essence got 2 each, one consisting of noodle, the other more of a vegetable mix. Both made by creating a pancake like base and fried egg on top. These were so delicious and very filling. We both cant wait to start making these dishes back home. Another memorable moment during our stay was an evening spent at our hostel. As this hostel had a sociable lounge area, we got talking to other guests whilst enjoying our Japanese beers. Amongst them was a girl from Sydney, a guy ... read more

Everybody knows Hiroshima due to its terrible place in history. In fact our prompt to come here was to visit the Peace park and museum. There is little doubt that its past has had a profound impact on its people and yet there is a strong sence of peace and hope. Hiroshima is an excellent example of a place that is not dwelling on the past but forging a positive future. Even the destruction of the city has been turned to its advantage as Hiroshima has been rebuilt with wide tree lined streets and beautiful parks and gardens. Our hotel room overlooks a tree lined boulevard that runs to the Peace park not far away. At night this boulevard is transformed by elaborate Christmas light displays and is full of families enjoying the sight. The areas ... read more

This was another thing I wanted to visit and had a few hours in the morning to do so before my Shinkansen ride back to Tokyo later that day. Some of these pictures are from the grounds nearby the Hiroshima Castle itself. It was clear to me that this castle isn't in the same repair as say the Osaka Castle. Both were well done and such on the inside, but I would have to say the exterior of the Osaka Castle was in far better shape than the exterior of the Hiroshima Castle. The Hiroshima Castle was destroyed by the atomic bomb on 6 Aug 1945, and due to its fairly close proximity to the A-Bomb Dome would have to imagine the building on that day stood no chance of surviving that bombing.... read more
