Today I was off to rabbit island which is about an hour or so from Hiroshima by high speed and local train. There were two purposes for visiting the island, first and foremost to see the rabbits, and secondly to see where they once stored and tested chemical weapons. You get to the island by ferry which cost 310¥ each way. I had booked trains to get me to Tadanoumi station by about 10am. When I got to Mihara, where I had to change trains, I went to the platform and stood waiting for train, only to turn round and see it pulling out of the station. It seems the platform was further up the station and not where you exit from the stairs and escalator. So I had to wait another hour and 15 minutes ... read more

Today I was off to visit the site of the Hiroshima A bomb explosion. Is checked out the map and spoke to the staff at the hostel and found out it was close by and very easy to get to, so I set off on my travels. It was a cloudy day and cooler of late so for the first time in ages I donned my long trousers lol. I ended to catch the tram which ran between the train station and the location of the A bomb memorial. To be honest I couldn't have picked a better location to stay since my sole purpose of visiting was to see the memorial park. As luck would have it there was a tram just pulling up and I jumped in it, my second piece of luck was ... read more

It was suggested to me that I might like visiting Miyajima island, so after fully exploring the A-Bomb Dome and Peace Park in Hiroshima, decided to take the ferry over and see the island. I was not disappointed. Loved the shrines there, the inquisitive yet apathetic deer, the calorie burning rather steep hike up to Mt. Misen, then of course the views from Mt. Misen. I took the ferry from the Peace Park area which was about a 40 minute boat ride at a cost of ¥ 2000. Upon leaving the island, I took the free JR ferry (it was free since my Japan Rail Pass was still valid at that time) from the island to its Miyajimaguchi terminal and then the JR line back to Hiroshima station. Was both very interesting and had many moments ... read more

The grounds of the Peace Park itself sit across the Aioi river from the A-Bomb Dome, are quite scenic, and respect and acknowledge the vicitms of the atomic bombing on 6 Aug 1945. Also on these grounds is the Peace Park Museum, which I have composed a separate blog entry as those photos are quite sobering in comparison to the photos for this entry.... read more

I had long been interested to visit Hiroshima to see what physical evidence of the 6 Aug 1945 bombing was still in existence. One thing I was surprised by was to feel such a connection to the events of that day when I finally saw the remains of thisbuilding in person. I arrived into Hiroshima on the afternoon of 25 Sep 2014 and immediately came to visit the dome. I took pictures at that time with just my digital camera. I came back the next morning, a clearer weather day, to take pictures with my tablet as a backup in case those pictures came out better. What I am posting is a mixture of the two. On 6 Aug 1945, this building was known as The Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. It is now known as ... read more

Unfortunately, the photos that I took in the museum are not as clear as I would have liked. Still, there are some pretty moving pictures here. Once you arrive in the interior of the museum, the first thing you see is several photos of the mushroom cloud taken from different vantage points around Hiroshima. Shortly thereafter you see artifacts, photos, and stories of the suffering and destruction.... read more

We arrived in Hiroshima at about 10am which was just over two hours after we left Kyoto. We dropped our bags off at our hotel and set off on foot towards the Atomic Bomb Dome. It took us about half an hour to walk to the dome from our hotel. Along the way we passed heaps of shopping malls and restaurants. The dome is located in the middle of Hiroshima and a lovely park with memorials and a museum have been constructed around it. I always find it strange seeing sites in person that I have seen in books or on TV my whole life and the A-Bomb Dome was no different. I think it was slightly smaller than I expected. A number of signs have been erected around the building which is fenced off from ... read more

Up bright and early to shovel as much onigiri and other breakfast goodies as possible into us before our short journey outside Hiroshima city. As we were travelling across the city on the Hiroden (tram) towards Hiroden Nishi-Hiroshima terminus, Neil commented about the houses built into the hillsides he could see. Sadly, just over a month later, Hiroshima was hit with heavy rains and some of those houses we had seen had been destroyed by landslides. The day we were visiting Miyajima Island, however, was the hottest of 2014 and the heat was almost unbearable at 39 degrees! Officially, the island is actually named Itsukushima but because the island is so closely related to its key shrine (Itsukushima), it’s nickname is Miyajima which is Japanese for ‘shrine island’ and that’s what it’s more commonly known as. ... read more

We had an idea in our mind how Hiroshima would be and it was nothing like we expected. We had both learned about Hiroshima while we were at University, on very different courses. Neil on a Biomedical Science course, about the effects of radiation on the human body. Donna on an International Relations course, about the Second World War, its end in Asia and the post-war recovery of Japan. We have to say, this blog is quite a difficult one for us to write, in the same respect as writing about S21 prison or the Killing Fields (in Cambodia) was difficult. The only reason Hiroshima is known throughout the world is due to a very dark day of recent human history and the story around the ‘Little Boy’ bomb and the city, all of which is ... read more
