Wednesday, 22nd May 2013 Ohayou gozaimasu, Hiroshima. Using the city as my base, I took a 45-minute train ride along the eastern seaboard which would bring me straight to Kure City. Home to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (海上自衛隊, JMSDF), there were two museums worth exploring on the ground. The JMSDF Kure Museum and the Yamato Museum (separate admission charges applies) were located next to one another. Given the time constraints, I opted for the free JMSDF Museum which offered me great insights on the submarine operations in safeguarding the sovereignty of Japan's waters. Housed together with a de-commissioned submarine vessel, I was able to relate to the maritime jargons given the nature of industry I was working in. There were also exhibits depicting life-sized sleeping quarters and the various kinds... read more

Tuesday, 21st May 2013 Against the backdrop of the cool evening breeze and the voices of a Japanese girl singing by the banks of Ota River, this was a particular sombre evening for me. I took an early morning tram to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park to begin my fulfilling day of museum hopping while retracing the footsteps of the Second World War. Like Nagasaki, Hiroshima also suffered from the effects of atomic bombing during the war. In fact, the world's first atomic bomb was dropped over the skies of the city on the morning of 6th August 1945. Coming from the tram station, it was the Atomic Bomb Dome (Hiroshima Peace Memorial) that greeted me. Formerly known as the Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, parts of the dome-shaped building managed to withstand from the bombing raids ... read more

Monday, 20th May 2013 This morning, I was up by 5.30am to take a final look of Nagasaki before moving on to Hiroshima. I proceeded to take pictures of the Dejima Harbour which commanded great views of the port and the surrounding mountains. The city flourished during the early days due to its trading activities with the rest of the world. My visit to the harbour would somehow bring a closure to my trip in Nagasaki. The next phase of my journey would see me through Hiroshima after a transfer of trains at Hakata (Fukuoka). I arrived at the city of Hiroshima at exactly 2.47pm on Monday afternoon after completing some 434 km on rail from Nagasaki. It's always a joy to ride on these modern machines as the trains always arrived on schedule - something ... read more

I spent two days skiing in Hakuba where the snow was actually quite good considering it was the middle of April. The ski area wasn't massive however, and some of the runs to the valley were already closed due to a lack of snow at that level. This meant one day's skiing here would probably have been enough. I'd originally planned to go to one of the other nearby resorts on my second day, but the advertised free shuttle from the hostel wasn't running anymore as I was pretty much the only person there skiing at the time. I did a second day in the same ski area which I enjoyed, but by the end of the two days I knew most of the place backwards. I enquired about whether Apres Ski exists in Japan or ... read more

We always look forward to visiting Japan because this is where we met. To enter the country there are lots of immigrations procedures. Every passenger had to have a face-to-face meeting with officials, have our picture taken, then our temperature taken, then fingerprinted, our passport inspected and then our picture taken again. Another unusual thing was that every official had a white mask covering their mouth and nose. I was wondering if it was because of the fear of radiation from the tsunami disaster two years ago. But we were later told by our tour guide that everyone wears these masks because of the pollen and the pollution which is carried by the prevailing winds from China to Japan. The Japanese call this smog the "yellow dust" and they aren't too happy to have this unwanted ... read more

Day 5 Our wake up call at 6.15am was not very welcome, but the guide was insistant. We went for breakfast on the top floor of the hotel, in the Sky Lounge, which had a 360deg view of Hiroshima bay. We watched the sun rise above the mountains, whilst enjoying a good breakfast of fruit, rolls and yogurt. We even had the option of an omlette if we wanted. We met in the lobby at 7.45 for an 8am departure. The temperature had certainly dropped, and although there was a clear sky and it was sunny, it was cold. We set off for the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Museum. When we got off the bus, the first thing we saw was the ghostly image of the A Dome building. It was very close to the hypocentre ... read more

We arrived in Hiroshima around lunchtime and another beautiful, warm day greeted us. We dumped our stuff at the hostel (a little more hostelish than the place in Nara, although still fantastic) and headed out to Peace Park, where the Memorial Museum, Children's Peace Monument (1000 cranes story) and the A Bomb Dome is located. A tram took us right to the epicentre and we wandered around for a while, taking our time to look at the various monuments. Heading in to the museum was interesting and provided us with the Japanese interpretation of events before, during and after the second world war. Lots of artefacts, maps, photographs and information about what happened. Eleanor was great; asking relevant questions and taking in a lot all at once. I hope she doesn't have nightmares. After sampling the ... read more
