After a well earned sleep in our futon we went down stairs for a western breaky . Then packed our backpack for a hike around Miyajima island. The weather was brilliant, we had 27 degrees with slight humidity and clear blue skies. We walked along the beach and took photos with the deer infront of the giant tori gate. Then up the ropeway to the top of Mount Misen. It was great to see Hiroshima and the many surrounding islands, we could also see the clear blue water lapping on the sandy beaches...we just wanted to go for a swim! We took the 2.5km walk down through the forest and came across many waterfalls and a large wild monkey, a Japanese Macaque. He didn't stay long enough for a photo and blended in well with the ... read more

Early start with our luggage. We took the local train to Tokyo station to catch the shinkansen to Hiroshima. A four hour trip including change of trains at Shin-Osaka station. Travelling at almost 200kmh we passed Fujiyama on our right...a clear view of Japan's highest mountain. Once in Hiroshima we put our luggage in the station lockers and caught the romendensha (tram) to the Peace Park . Finally we were able to hang our 1000 paper cranes made by Seacliff PS. students . Another train ride and ferry over to Miyajima island . We arrived after check-in and walked 20 minutes with luggage now with two flat tyres ! We arrived at the Miyajima Seaside Hotel to be greeted in true Japanese style. Aussie thongs at the entrance and Andrew's giant feet squished into hotel slippers! ... read more

Demain des photos ... read more

Today we left Osaka for the day and took the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Hiroshima to visit the Hiroshima Peace Park at the site where the atomic bomb went off. First off, I am including a video of the shinkansen super express train as it blasts through a train station so you can get an idea of just how fast it moves, and also one of the Japanese countryside while on the Shinkansen. Inside it's very quiet, so it almost feels like your are floating at high speeds.Shinkansen passing through the rail station:Japanese countryside from Shinkansen:... read more

Despite planning an early departure from Kanazawa, we were grounded for lack of funds. Unlike in the UK, cash machines are always located inside the bank, so despite our best efforts searching high and low for a hole-in-the-wall at 6:30, we were forced to wait until the post office opened at 09:00 to withdraw some more yen to pay the Ryokan bill. I had read that Japan is a 'cash society' in my experience that seems to be true. It seems strange that in a country with computerised toilet seats, many restaurants, cafes and small hotels don't take plastic. Withdrawing cash can also be a problem as most Japanese banks don't accept international cards. There is however a post office in even the small towns and these always have ATMs which accept international cards. Given that ... read more

After a quick breakfast, we checked-out of our room in central Hiroshima and caught the number 1 streetcar back to Hiroshima station. I had planned our journey to our next destination, Onomichi, using the website www.hyperpedia.com, as per usual. However, as we were running a bit late and had missed the intended trains, we just attended the ticket desk and asked about getting to Onomichi. The person at the ticket desk kindly printed the train times and wrote the English names for the stations, which was fortunate, as for the local trains we required the announcements and station names displayed on the train were in Japanese only so we had to just keep an eye out the window for our station. Finding the correct platform when we changed was also tricky. We arrived in Onomichi at ... read more

This will be my almost final Japanese blog – and actually written on the JR Beetle jetfoil from Hakata to Busan in Korea on 11 June. I left Kyoto on one shinkansen then had to change to the Sakura Kyoto shinkansen at Shin Osaka. Osaka is so close it is only about 18 mins, then the Sakura is pretty fast to Hakata as minimal stops and about 2 hours. Fortunately coming in (I knew where it was anyway) I saw from the train the green neon of the Green Hotel where I was staying in Hakata. In case you are confused, Fukuoka/Hakata are the same thing – originally two towns but the station is in Hakata so they call it that. Nice to have a hotel so close to the station – in fact the 11thfloor ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hiroshima » Fukuyama May 22nd 2013

Wednesday, 22nd May 2013 After saying goodbye to Kure city, I rode the train back to Hiroshima where I continued my journey on the Shinkansen. Barely 23 minutes and some 103km later, I had arrived at the city of Fukuyama (福山). Fukuyama was never part of my itinerary as far as my travel plans were concerned. But as my train pulled into the city centre, I was attracted by the sight of the castle sitting next to the station. Naturally, I got down from my train with no plans, just plain curiosity. I helped myself with a bowl of delicious ramen over lunch within the train station. As usual, the Japanese wait-staffs never failed to impress me with their eagerness to serve coupled with their infectious smiles. After my meals, I wandered around the Fukuyama Castle ... read more
