Having a Japan Rail pass makes things so easy - just show your pass to officer at the manual ticket gate at any Japanese train station and just pass on through and board any train you want apart from the two fastest class of shinkansen to anywhere you want. It never takes long to get from one place to another and I was appreciating the short journeys after all the long ones in China. A mere one-and-a-half hours later, I had reached my next destination of Hiroshima. The city is nice and compact and very easily walkable. It was also noticeably quieter here than in Osaka - combined with its relatively small size and it really didn't feel like a city with 1.2m inhabitants. Despite the lack of traffic however, it did not stop the locals ... read more

Just to begin, one of the few downsides to life in Japan is the lack of street names and house numbers.....there aren’t any!! Hard to believe in this country of perfection, accuracy and convenience, but it is so. But, back on the road....after the long march of Kumano.......and the rain...it all turned out sunny, I went to the beach.... Then it was on to a lovely seaside town, Shirahama, more fabulous tiny bars and funny people, really made to feel at home. And a very nice little bay with great beach. It's pretty deserted, still the low season for tourists I guess.....but I think it's all quiet down south. The youth have gone to the city for work and life, the old remain. It's Tuesday and I'm not due in Hiroshima until Wednesday so I take ... read more

Day 13. Omishima to Onomichi. 72km. 730m ascent. Last night six of us went to a local bar after dinner, just as a way of experiment as you do. The speciality was the local sake supplied in 1.8l bottles, needless to say we left some for the locals but not before Cecilia found her headache again. Another night sleeping on the floor and another night sleeping well- amazing. The nearby Ohyamazumi Shrine was visited before we skipped town, one that is 1300 years old and was used by the Samurai warriors in 1185 to pray for victory over the existing autocratic rulers, who also prayed there. Needless the Samurai won the day and ruled until democracy was restored in 1868. Alongside the Temple is a museum of Samurai clothing, swords, daggers and bows and arrows etc. ... read more

The island of Itsukushima is more famously known as Deer Island. The Sika deer roam freely amongst the shrines, shops, and visitors. They are very tame and friendly . In ancient times, the deer on Miyajima were worshipped as messengers of the Gods and of the locals. Just don't let your guard down, bc they will come after your breakfast muffin!... read more

Sunday 12th March Another good night's sleep. Must have been the 20+ kms we walked yesterday that helped. Both of us were keen to leave so that there wouldn't be any stress catching the first Shinkansen train for the trip. These high speed trains are included on our JR Railpasses we bought before leaving Australia. We arrived at Tokyo Station via the subway train and a walk through about 500m of passages, before 0900hrs and a departure of 1003hrs. This gave us a relaxing time beforehand to have a good coffee at Starbucks and then make our way to the train. What a train! Very sleek and spacious seating. We travelled at over 200kph smoothly and quietly. On our arrival at Hiroshima Station we had no problems in following the photo directions, given by our host, ... read more

Toyocho station, our neighbourhood train line, was the start of the southern leg of the trip. Dragging my backpack/ roller bag over manicured and paved streets was a noisy exercise, and P2 carting strongly by back, we had generous transition times for the Otemachi connection to hectic Tokyo station. The facially masked brigade swarmed past us by Mama-san bike, curious glances, or generally, fixated on their phones. In the throes of the underground rail road works, the rabbit warren gave way to organised chaos. We found our place on the shinkansen bound for Shin-Kobe and then eventually, the old town centre of Kurashiki. A weekday, the train filled up to the brim by Shinagawa, and as efficient timing has it here, we connected to leg number 2. Kurashiki put on breezy cool but fine weather, and ... read more

We extended our travels of Japan by heading further west to Hiroshima. We made the 330km trip by (you guessed it) bullet train. There really is no finer way to travel. Our first stop when we reached Hiroshima, was Hiroshima Castle. This flat land castle was built in the 16th century by Mori Terumoto to assert political power. Sadly, the tower was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945. It has since been restored and renovated. Inside, is a local history and samurai museum. We spent hours walking around the five storey tower. We attempted to build our own castle walls, tried on Samurai armour and inspected some terrifying Samurai gear. The Samurai swords were particularly impressive. We took some time to learn about how they were made. But, it was not just blades keeping the ... read more
