One of the major events in my Bali trip was enjoying the local food. From the not-to-be-missed (as stated in some travel books) Ibu Oka babi guling, the Murni's Warung, Wayan Batu, Cafe Wayan, Bebek Bengkel, Bali Buddha, Cafe Lotus, Lotus Lane etc. to the less known Biah Biah, Bridge Cafe, Padi to the local food stall without a name on the road sides selling nasi campur, bakso, or dessert. A meal can be as expensive as 20USD or as cheap as less than 1USD per peson. I didnt try the French cuisine here (some said Bali has some of the best French cuisinier here) coz I believe in Malaysia we can have some good ones too. After trying most of the so called recommended restaurants, the only taste I can still remember right now is ... read more

Marilyn and friends sent me off in style with a lovely brunch on Sunday, wine, champagne, beautiful Italian meal in the garden. A last supper of sorts. Then off to Bali. I arrived in the dark and had no idea of the paradise that awaited. My hotel is in Seminyak on the beach. I was greeted with a smile and followed down a winding path lit with lights amongst tropical trees, small fish ponds... I fell asleep to the sound of tree frogs and awoke very early to the sound of song birds, the crashing waves in the distance and smell of incense. I took a walk on the beach as the sun was rising (~7:30 am everyday since we are at the equator) and watched some local fishermen on the beach and out in boats. ... read more

I am staying at the Conrad (Hilton Family) Resort in Bali and it is stunning .. truly amazing. When I arrived at the airport there was a BWM X5 waiting to take me to the resort. The drive there was, thankfully, uneventful. When we arrived at the hotel it was to a stunning scene -- a massive waterfall on a stone wall with two massive torches buring on either side -- so sorry I did not get a picture of that. (Will probably be back there in a few weeks, so will get one next time!) Anyway, the entrance may have set one up for disappointment as it set such a standard... but no, the rest of the resort was just as opulent and wonderful. And the staff was even better. If you have a chance, ... read more

One of the very first questions I am always asked when I tell people that I am South African is "So do you surf man?" -"NO, cricket and golf pal." But at least I can now answer with a resounding "Hell yeah man, I love surfin" Ryan and I tried our best at Kuta beach today and yesterday. The only things I had going for me was that I am South African, a stud and have long hair. I achieved more than I thought I would by actually standing up! Lobby is quite a bit better than me due to his past surfing experience. Who would of thought, two boytjies from Pinelands surfing Indo! This morning was a bit frustrating bc it was quite big and constantly breaking and hence it was a bit of a ... read more

There isn't a whole lot to write about for our time in Bali so we shall keep it brief. It's not that we didn't like it - quite the contrary - we just didn't do a great deal apart from lounging by the hotel pool, walking by the beach, shopping and eating lots of great food. We met up with Craig and Saira, a couple that we had met previously in Laos and Vietnam and spent a few weeks doing as little as possible. We arrived on the 28th March just in time for the Balinese new year celebrations or Nyepi. The celebrations begin 3 days before the start of the New Year and the most exciting part of it occurs on the eve of Nyepi when local youths from different villages compete to build the ... read more

We are near the end of our trip and have now entered the land of mystical gods, white sand beaches, and thousands of temples galore - we are in Bali. The hotel we are staying at is absolutely gorgeous. I think it's the best value we have ever reserved. Uma Ubud, is situated about 3 km from the center of Ubud city and is sorrounded by lush tropical forests and a river that runs throughout the city. We just went on our morning walk through the rice fields and saw the villagers way of life. On the streets of Ubud, there are huge manholes on the sidewalk, and one of the older guests from the hotel fell into the hole and cut up his leg pretty badly. It brought shivers down my spine just looking at ... read more

What can I say about Bali? I went there with 2 very good friends, Lila & Annabel. It was a fabulous trip with some negatives here and there. The weather was wonderful and the beaches are great. Spent a lot of time on the beach, but also took in the sites and the culture. I was surprised to to discover that there is a lot of Indian influence in Indonesia (hence the "Indo" part). Everything in Indonesia is cheap, however if you are a foreigner, expect to be taken for a ride when it comes to the cost of anything. I hate bargaining, but I became a pro at it by the 2nd day, otherwise you end up being ripped off left, right and center. The starting price of anything always ended up being more than ... read more

Bali, Bali, Bali. Well I can tell you that I spent the majority of the flight from Kuala Lumpar to Bali gawking at our air hostess. Most beautiful air hostess I have ever had by a country mile. Unreal. Oh and if you are ever flying out of KL make sure you know exactly which airport you are flying out of bc there are 3 of them. And the one is by Sepang and the other is Subang. Ja we got lost and almost missed our flight, last people to check in two flights in a row, thank you very much. Arrived in Bali, payed the million or however many rupees to get to Kuta beach, found a dodgy guest house for 60,000 a night(7 USD). Ryan and I got into bed and discussed globalization and ... read more
