Spent much of the day in Candidasa, although there was not much to report according to my diary. We did need to complete some chores before we left for Australia, including checking for mail at the American Express office. Andy was the last to check, but the woman in the office had some trouble understanding the name 'Gifford'. In the end, he was getting frustrated and in a final, desperate attempt tried "Golf, Indigo, Foxtrot, Foxtrot, Omega, Romeo Delta". Most of the people in the office were very impressed and some amused, but we all felt sympathy for the poor woman. You could see the life drain out of her as she almost started to cry, and we felt duty bound to step in and try to help her out - but probably with five of ... read more

Ubud is one of the main cultural centres in Bali and was a must. The most famous attraction is Goa Ganja, otherwise known as the Elephant Cave. Before we were allowed in, we had to cover our legs, but there was someone on hand to lend us skirt-like pieces of material. We visited the cave in two groups so that someone would be keeping an eye on all our worldly good in the open-top staff cars. As Tiny and I were waiting for the others a coach-load of schoolgirls from Jakarata turned up and they all wanted to have their photographs taken with us. There we were in the main tourist location in Bali and the longest queue was one of girls waiting to have their pictures taken with us. Next, for some reason that I ... read more

We headed south again via a dormant volcano called Mount Abang. This was basically a small volcano in the blown-out crater of what was once a very big one. The journey up the rim of the crater was tough on the poor old staff cars and, of course, one of them broke down again. Coupled with that, the cars were open top and it started raining. We were drenched. Our ears were popping the whole way up and the top was literally in the clouds. As we were nearing the top, we came across a temple that was up a long flight of stairs. Up we went, but we soon regretted it - our legs felt like jelly and we were gasping for air, presumably due to the altitude and the lack of oxygen. It had ... read more

Bali is small enough that you can quite happily drive around it yourself so we hired a couple of cars to tour round. In keeping with what our budget would allow, the cars we ended up with were clapped-out heaps. They resembled the cars that Nazi generals used to drive around in during World War II. As we were heading north through the mountains one of them broke down on a corner going up a hill. As we were trying to turn it round so that we could jump-start it down the hill, a huge great lorry came round the corner, lights blazing, and we honestly didn't think we were going to make it. We then broke down again just as we arrived in Singaraja and someone who was passing by helped us out. It also ... read more

Kuta was not far from the main town on Bali, Dempasar, so we went there for a day to do some shopping (we were buggered if we were going to buy anything off those people on the beach). Dempasar was a true shopping paradise. It was a chance to pick-up some more gifts for everyone back home plus a few for ourselves. There were all sorts of wooden artefacts, but I took a liking to a wooden chess board with pieces in the shapes of Bali style 'Garrudas'. It was also excellent for clothes, which were not as good quality as those in Thailand, but were much less mainstream in design and were made from far more interesting materials. We could well be seeing the 'Bali influence' on the cat-walks back in Europe some time in ... read more

Aeroflot all is forgiven. The train arrived in Surabaia late and consequently we missed the ferry to Bali. All was not lost as our taxi driver suggested that we try for a plane and he took us to the airport. We were in the air thirty minutes later. The plane was owned by that world-renowned continental airline Buraq Airways. One look at the plane and we knew why the flight only cost £15. It was a small propeller driven effort, which would seat about 40 people and was covered in rust. Half way into the flight the combination of the flight and the crate loads of beer we'd devoured the night before took their toll and we all began filling our sick bags. We arrived on Bali a bit the worse for wear, but well ahead ... read more

As mentioned in my last post, my reason for leaving Fiji before the end of the crushing season in late 1973 was that I had a fully planned trip overland Asia to London with a number of fares already locked in, so I wasn’t about to let that opportunity lapse. I had been planning this trip for the best part of two years with my good mate, let’s call him Robert, so I also felt some commitment to him not to pull the plug. We had already pre-booked a bus tour from Kathmandu to London with Sundowners, starting in late March, so that was to give us two months to make our way overland from Sydney to Kathmandu, starting in late January. When you take off for twelve months of continuous travel, you don’t expect all ... read more
