We have both recovered quickly from hospital, and unfortunately the doctor said that there was nothing that we could do to avoid getting sick, because even the cleanest of restaurants can carry the bacteria on their dishes, in the water… anything really. It doesn’t help that most Asians spit everywhere and pick their noses. It sucks, because after the first time we were so careful, and it is not even our fault that we got sick again. So we have just spent one week in Bali, we didn’t even rinse our toothbrushes under the water because we just cannot afford to be sick again and lose more time as it is quickly dwindling away. At the end of our stay in Phuket we were SO SO SAD TO LEAVE. We had one last night out which ... read more

Part 18 March 16 Payangan Dogs bark, chickens cackle, geese squawk, water gurgles--the sounds of morning wake the four of us straining the spartan bed offered for the night. Thousands of tiny ants crawl along the windowsill, invited in perhaps by the windows opened to accommodate our Western penchant for fresh air and relief from the heat of the day. More than occasionally, one of these ants finds its way onto my exposed skin, perpetrating tiny bites that are their last living act once they are so easily identified. This is definitely a different face of Bali than we see in Ubud, and probably even further from the beachfront facades adorning the tourist center of Kuta. Payangan is the village where we stayed for two weeks 15 years ago with our Interlocken students and helped build ... read more

Well after our last episode we left you somewhere in Vietnam probably running from dodgy taxis and scooters honking at every opportunity. Keen to leave the chaos of Saigon we headed to the Mekong Delta and went on a lovely wooden canoe to tour the floating markets. It was really bizarre seeing boats of potatoes and pineapples floating past, not sure it will catch on at the Thames, think Sainsbury’s can breathe easy! From there we took the fast boat to Cambodia, although fast was a rather inaccurate description of the journey which seemed to take the best part of a day! The border crossing was quite smooth and straightforward (especially after we had been told to slip a $5 note inside our passports - who said anything about corruption?). We arrived in the capital Phnom ... read more

Part 17 March 11 Ubud, Bali The roosters call from all quarters as the sun rises over the rice paddies, making fields of flowing green almost yellow under the glowing backlight. Despite the changes wrought by many years of unbridled development of what was considered a tourist paradise, Bali still has the scenery and serenity to charm. It is little hard to get past outward appearances here--on one hand the natural beauty of the lush palm fringed rice fields terraced up towards the holy mountains not so far off on this island where nothing is more than 50 km away; on the other the almost eerie feel of this glut of guesthouses, resorts, bungalows, and other tastefully manicured accommodations and restaurants that are, at best, 25% occupied and, more likely, house one or two guests in ... read more

Scott writes: Flying to Bali Flying to Bali via Brunei for our two week stay on Paradise Island was like an economy class dream on Royal Brunei Airlines. Even though flying still gives me the Hibbie Jibbies I soon forgot about that once the movies on demand flashed up on my seat TV and PS2 style joy pad for arcade games. A choice of meal and to cap it all stainless steel knife and folk. Very Posh. We were wondering what first class gets you!!! Flying into Brunei to change planes gave us a window view of the country. We think we saw Sutan Palace as the building was huge and very gold but we are not sure. Anyway, another three hours at 35,000 feet and we touched down in Bali. We had already booked our ... read more

Fiona and I have finally started traveling around Southeast Asia. We spent a couple of days in Kuta, but have since moved onto Ubud. Tomorrow we head off to Lombok. We've seen some dance and some temples and lots of fantastic scenery. I'll let Fi fill you in on more. I'm tired of doing all the writing. Kuta beach wasn't so good. The place is fairly deserted due to the 2nd bombing (according to a local waiter) so the hawkers are even more pushy than I remembered. The place had a really depressing feel to it and we were pleased to get to Ubud which is much nicer and laid back. It poured with rain while we were there but we had fun chilling on our porch playing backgammon. The place where we stayed was really ... read more

Well here we find an interesting little array of pictures! Needless to say I didn't choose these! Yes the scenery is mystical and stunning but please ignore the person in the bright turquoise shawl! Anyway, as you will have realised I have been somewhat slack on the whole Travelblog front in recent months! I intend to rectify this but you will have to bear with me. Lauren is very kindly adding some pictures to update backlogged blogs and I will try and fill in the blurbs as and when. This seems as a good a place to start as any though. I arrived in Kuta, Bali's busiest and in our eyes coolest resort numerous hours after Lauren did AND I left a couple of hours before her too!! Reason being I was flying Singapore Airlines and ... read more

Well we left Ubud and Royal Pita Maha yesterday and have arrived in Jimbaran. The hotel is really nice, but we don't get the personal attention that we received at the Royal Pita Maha!!! The hotel is right on the beach and the views are amazing, it's just a pity that the sun isn't shining. We went to a really nice seafood restaurant on the beachfront last night. Marion was a bit shocked when I had to choose which fish I wanted killing for dinner!?!?! Needless to say, I think I picked the juiciest one. However, his eyes were a bit difficult to swallow. Before the meal, four Balinese guitarists who played everything from Santana to the Beatles serenaded us!! Bali really is geared for the honeymooners, and the people really can't do enough for you!! ... read more

This is a rather old travel jornal, but id like to store all my travel strories at one place, so i copied and pasted the text from my homepage Airplane Sydney-Denpasar Good bye Australia... It is somehow weird, i´m not really that sad. It was a very special time and I will miss all my friends I made over there. Right now the Australian Outback is passing by below me and with every second people that begun to mean a lot to me get more distant. However now there are new exciting things ahead of me. In about 4.5 hours I´ll be in Indonesia. I have to admit I´m a little bit nervous about the brothers picking me up from the airport. Hopefully we´ll recognize each other? The international brotherhood is a true blessing. My main ... read more
