So I've left India...I'm sitting in an Internet Cafe in Ubud, Bali. Obviously as you can tell from all my previous blogs, not surprisingly, life is great as usual. However I do miss India. Left a small piece of my heart there as I guess you should if you spend more than three months in a country. I am going to try and recall some stories from Kolkata and Varanasi, but mostly I'll let the pictures do all the work. First I have to send a special thanks to my friends Dex and Mor who provided all the photos for this blog, because my camera broke in the Andamans. Jackass that I am I allowed sand to get into the lens and the little engine that could just died... Where to begin, caught a flight to ... read more

Hi family and friends, I am having a go at being a 'blogger' rather than a 'b-gger'!! So bear with me while I develop some style here if you will! I am ( hopefully) attaching photos of Mother Teresa's tomb at the Missionaries of Charity house in Kolkata. On Monday I am heading to Dharamsala but I believe the Dalai Llama has decided to go to Brisbane!! Never mind. There is plenty of beauty to enjoy there. Cheers, Jayne.... read more

My first entry from India and probably the last one for a long while. The hospital is apparantly in the middle of the jungle in Assam and we have to travel at leat 2 km to reach a computer. It is going to be an experience! The last week has really been a big mixture of emotions and experiences. Having left the peace and beautiful Zanzibar (truely paradise) in Tanzania to arrive in Dehli really was a HUGE culture shock. It is very busy and fairly dirty. I also felt very much a foreigner alone in the city because I really didn't know any of the language. Coming from Tanzania where I had picked up a small amount of Swahili. It was easier when I met Becca and Heather who arrived the following day. I didn't ... read more

Day: 7 Marriage Proposals: 0 (what's wrong with me?) Curry Dishes Eaten: 26 Pounds Sweated Off: approx. 1.5 You know when you're at the gym...standing on the treadmill ready to get started...one foot on the side, the other on the belt (to test the speed)...and as the speed increases, you're hopping on one foot?! Well...this was the EXACT position i and Ann were in the other day when we jumped onto the train a little too late. The two of us (plus Katie) were headed to another train station, bound for Puri - a beautifully quiet beach town 10 hours south of Kolkata. As the train pulled in, Katie managed to elbow her way into the mosh-pit of people hanging out of the door...and as if the passengers were quick-sand, she was gone. Quickly, Ann ... read more

I arrived in Kolkata on Holi. The colour festival of India where people have massive water flights and paint each other brilliant reds, greens and yellows. Too add to the spectical of brightly coloured people I was also welcomed on trhe train by a transvestite singing and dancing. She came down the carrage clapping and singing as loud as she could and asked for a donation, I didnt have much change left so I said "no, sorry" but that was greeted with a sharp 'talk to the hand' gesture, I found a couple of rupee in my pocket and gave it to her. It must have beenthe right thing to do becuase she tapped me on the chin and forehead in approval ajnd moved on. I found my way to Sudder street and got a bed ... read more

Kolkata. Day 3... Marriage proposals: 0 Curry dishes eaten: 5 SO, i arrived into Kolkata from Taiwan March 13th...of course i got the flight that was arriving into India at 1am. Probably the most scared i have ever been in my life. As the escalator to gate E1a in Bangkok went up, over and on its way down into the waiting area i clearly realized i was a) the only female and b) the only non-Indian waiting for this flight. I have never had nerves like this before... As the plane touched down into Kolkata i was wondering why i had chosen such an unpopular tourist destination...also wondering if the man scheduled to pick me up was really who he was supposed to be. 2am i got out of the airport into a sea of men ... read more

In my imagination Calcutta was a romantic, exotic place; home of the British Raj. I imagined old steamboats chugging up the Houghli River arriving at veranda bungalows. This image was battling beside what I knew was one of the world's most besieged cities, the waves of floods, people, poverty and pollution had caused other travellers to warn us that it was not a place to hang around in. Still it is India's cultural capital; many great authors, academics and cricketers hail from here. Calcutta has not disappointed. Now known as Kalkota it is described as "the City of Joy" or "the City of the Heart" in the tourist blurb, but the name comes from "Kali Ghat", meaning the riverbank (ghat) of Kali, the Goddess of Destruction. Fancy Raj buildings and churches are dotted around the city ... read more
