Only came to Calcutta to catch a flight to thailand(our original plan was to be in Nepal for 10 days but that didnt work out so it ended being pointless coming here). Only here for a day so im not going to call it a shit hole(?????) cos we didnt see anywhere. We did have the pleasure of sleeping in the worst place we ever slept but got a nice room the second day and vegged out. Went to a nice cake shop and tried to find the Gandhi statue but got to harressed in the rush hour traffic. Now its off to Thailand, cant bleeding wait. India was a crazy expierence. We did have a great time and saw some amazing things(contrary to my constant bitching on these pages!!!). Also saw the most disgusting and ... read more

La ... read more

It is actually a bit soon for this update, but I will be moving on to Ladakh today and putting Calcutta and Ladakh in one blog is a bit strange to me as they are so different. So even though I have only been here 2 days I will regale you with my stories of Calcutta... Well actually there is not much to tell... I like Calcutta; it has a ramshackle appeal to it... And it has that great swath of green, called the Maidan in the middle of it, which is wonderful to stroll through.. Than of course you have the backpacker district centered on Sudder Street, with it's manpowered rickshaws.. The only place in India I have encountered that... Very colonial... All I need is a white tropical suit, with one of those white ... read more

Rano kac. W Bangkoku ... read more

Arriving back in India we realised how much we were going to miss Nepal only minutes after crossing the border. At the Nepal side of the border the immigration officer simply shook his head sympathetically when we told him we were leaving his country and returning to India. Whilst on the Indian side we were met with an empty immigration office and told to wait there for 2 hours until the officer returned from lunch. We assume he ate at the lovely place we saw by the side of the road where a man was cooking a whole chicken with a small blow torch. After arguing that we wouldn't leave town, we were allowed to find a hotel and book a train for the next day. Booking the train was a bit of an event, with ... read more

I'm actually finishing my trip out here, we've been in Kolkata for 7 days. Main reason is I'm running a project called Big Shot Cricket and its aim is to caoch children from villages and communities that would not normally get something like this. Normally the rich families can do this. This is my third trip out to India and I have been all around the north before, but its my trip to Kolkata (Calutta) and I have to say it caught me by suprise. Not sure if it was the fact I had to leave my pregnant wife behind or the culture shock. I think it was the first option. Its really humid here, especially as we are in the monsoon time too, although we have had hardly any rain. Some days the temperature is ... read more

Despite disappearing off the face of the planet for a week in Sikkim, we are alive and well in Kolkata (Calcutta). We spent about 4 days in Pelling, which is a remote hill town at about 2100m. Most of our days involved a combination hanging out, eating momos (Tibetan Dumplings - David has a mild addiction) and taking in the mountain scenery. The ride from Gangtok to Pelling was an interesting one indeed. It was raining pretty hard (not surprising in Monsoon season) which caused tons of landslides, some of which wiped out portions of the road. We are starting to understand their affinity for jeeps. Luckily it wasn't nearly as bad as what is going on in neighbouring Bangladesh where monsoon is hitting a LOT harder. Although it was a bit foggy/rainy, we managed ... read more

Sorry for those following the blog (yes, both of you) for the lack of updates. India conspired against us with the power cuts and the odd uprising (read on). Now, in cold and clean New Zealand, I’ll try to make amends. Well it was in Kolkata that I had my first dose of food poisoning, no doubt contracted in Varanasi, with Scotty soon to follow. It was pretty mild, but when I was still attached to my ensuite on morning of the third day I succumbed to the peer pressure by Snapper and the others and took the antibiotic’s in my medical kit. Worked a charm - little did I know of the unusual side effects it was to have further down the road. Kolkata itself, or the central city at least, seemed prosperous compared ... read more

IIM who? IIM a bit lost here. Summer of 86 - the best summer of my life... graduating from IIM-Joka (IIM-C)... the culmination of 2 years of uninterrupted fatrugiri. Discovering oneself. I visited again in 2007. First time after graduating. Fully armed with an armour called "Dont expect too much.. its always a disappointment to go back to ones college" "anyways its been too long... dont be surprised if its changed too much". When I entered I almost turned back... I thought I had entered a picnic spot - maybe Botanical Gardens... it was Sunday. Around the lake were about a 1000 people.. OK well actually about 30 people .. in groups of 2 - 4 - sitting by the lake - reading the paper, drinking chai ... spending quality time with daughter... I was ... read more
