Well we have now been in the wonderful India for 3 days, and thus far we are loving it! We are in Kolkata (Calcutta) staying at the finest hotel I have ever seen, rediculous actually. (dont worry Brady we are just it is very reasonable!). Anyways, the people are incredible. In comparison to China there seem to be many more people everywhere, which is amazing in itself since we thought China was a busy place! The food is so good that we can feel ourselves expanding but cant help but savour every bite. Nothing but good things to say so far. That is all for now... we are off to enjoy more scents and sweets (Kolkata is the sweet capital of the world, no wonder we are in heaven!). ... read more

So here we are in the City of Joy, Kolkata. It's a crazy place and from what others have said, not many people enjoy it. We came expecting the worst, and whilst far from falling in love with the city, we haven't completely hated it. In honour of our anniversary we acted nice and went for a decadent dinner at Peter Cat - a pretty funky little place where the waiters wear turbans and cummerbunds. Corb had the local specialty - Chelo Kebabs - which was goat (we think) sausage, butter rice, and chicken and vegie kebabs... delicious! I had the Afghani Chicken - succulent and rich and everything we'd hoped. We also splashed out for drinks... ice cold beer and a not too shabby barcadi and pineapple.. mmmmmm. The food in Kolkata has generally been ... read more

What an adventure to reach this metropole! Yesterdayevening we went to the place where the AC Volvo would pick us up. A crew of men had been waiting fo us, cause the bus was broken. "Problem coming"... we told the crew that we really had to reach Kolkotta on the 18th before lunchtime... so the bus on next day wasn't an option. never seen indian men be so active and mental productive... They offered us a trainticket, but they were not sure if seat would still be available. After half an hour of waiting, sitting, spitting, drinking tea and discussing, the men dropped us in an ambassador and a taxidriver took us to the railwaystation... and than, Indian men in action! While we were waiting, somebody came to tell that there was a train in a ... read more

Well, my last day here, with a train booked to Silguri (gateway to Darjeeling and the North Eastern States) for 7.30 this evening. A case of perfect timing. I'm still hugely enjoying Kolkata, but I'm also really looking forward to moving on and getting my first glimpse of the Himalayas. And getting away from this incredible heat. 39 degrees, apparently. And I still haven't worked out why I like it so much here. I just keep coming back to the word 'charisma'. It's got such a buzz about it - hectic but still, in its own way, very laid back. Full of chancers, but they'll fleece you with a smile. Market traders who will try and sell you your own shoes, but who will at least haggle over the price. The classic experience was being asked ... read more

Unbelievable. Humidity and pollution so high that walking the street is like being repeatedly slapped around the face by a warm and rather dirty flannel. And the streets - so hectic they make Mumbai look like Milton Keynes on a quiet Sunday, and Bangalore like Worthing on Sea off-season. The traffic is gridlocked, every pavement is crammed with stalls, touts swoop on you as soon as you stop moving, and the beggars are spectacular. You almost feel like clapping them on the back and saying 'well done'. (But I think that might be in poor taste.) The traffic is an experience in itself. Everything is knackered, from the taxis pouring out black exhaust fumes to the old boys pulling the human powered rickshaws. Forget auto rickshaws. Or bicycle rickshaws. This is the real deal. We began our last day in Kolkata with a quick stop at the Royal Calcutta Golf Course; it was closed, Monday, so a quick photo had to suffice. On to the Police Station in our district of Kaligat, to give our regards to the District Superintendent and get the name and address of the Commissioner for some follow-up activity on the Force’s 150th anniversary, 2006; done. Then it was on to the Victoria Memorial, this multi-domed, Corinthian columned, monumental building of generous marbled exterior. It is a beauty to behold and is the signature landmark of the city. It stands south of a giant maiden, a park, and needs this huge expanse of open ground to give proportionality to its presence in the landscape. It was built by Lord Curzon, at the time of his Queen’s ... read more

We set aside today to ensure we spend time on the raw side of Kolkata; that is, with those who are poor and without. As in so many cities, it is possible never to come in contact with the underbelly of Calcutta, particularly on so short a stay. We set out of our neighbourhood, on the southern end of the city and headed to the subway, intending to head north and stop off further into city centre than we did yesterday. Well, the Metro does not run until 3:00pm on Sundays. Never mind, we lined up for the Bus 47B headed north. Trouble is, the bus never arrives as such; it floats by the intersection, in the centre lane. You signal to the conductor that you want in, he bangs on the side of the bus ... read more

Am like Mrs 40 Coats here!!! Running round from one job to another, buttttt love it... I have to present the teachers of the 5 city schools with all the equipment I bought for them, on Monday. A bit nervous! I got fruit, vegetable, flowers, parts of the body and Counting to 100 Posters for each school. I also made 8 Colours posters with labels for them and got them laminated. The teachers in one of the schools did these with me. They look great. Also giving each school a copy of the Alphabet book and Counting Book and the Alphabet cards that I got copied and laminated too. Am delighted with how well they turned out. Will take photos on Monday for those whose money I have used to fund that project. Taken lots already ... read more

Kolkata, so far, is a pleasant disappointment to us; it does not live up to its advance notice of a chaotic city, down at the heels; at least not seen through the up beat way its people go about their lives. It might be we can be sanguine about the city, because we chose to stay in a neighbourhood rather than centre town, and that we have not made it to downtown proper as yet; it could also be that our first day among the crowds was today, a Saturday. Whatever; our arrival at the Howath train station was orderly; the environs conveyed a sense of ease. As we searched to find our bearings, people thoughtfully offered help: directions, language translations, no-hassle, pre-paid taxi arrangements. The drive, to our guest-house place of stay, took us across ... read more

Including the week-end in the Sunderbans ...apparently spelled with an s according to newspaper and listing here in the computer .... the stay in Kolkata has lasted ten days. Ask me not what I have done Three days in the Delta, two days spent at cooking class, two days spent with new friends and that basically leaves only three days to see the sights. City tour by bus, Victoria Memorial, 31st Annual Book Fair, India Museum, railway refund and air ticket hassle, two visits to the GPO to mail things, making and visiting with new friends, finding places to eat like the reward lunch and the perfect cup of coffee... shopping for this and that ... email and blog updates....but no zoo or botanical garden. As I sit at the computer the sounds of yet another ... read more
