Hey Everybody, Just sitting here at an internet store in Kolkata. It's super slow... The letters show up about a second after I type them. We took a bike rickshaw to come here. I feel like India wasn't fit for people my size ;-) The seat sure as hell wasn't big enough for 2 people. Who knows, maybe i'm just a lot fatter than I think I am. I'm also about a foot taller than anyone else i've seen here. We're staying with my aunt and uncle here. They seem to think that the only reason I'm here is to eat. They just keep feeding me sweets all day. If this keeps up, I might balloon up to 300 lbs by the time i get back. Of course, then I could wear a mumu... The traffic ... read more

The beauty of Tokyo is like an image seen in a dream. It always stays with you. The radiant Tokyo Tower is always in my mind. It surfaces and resurfaces without even my permission so that I have to relive my memories time and again. Though we go through our life chronologically, that is with the flow of time, our consciousness and thought process is always concurrent. In any given moment, we relive our whole life. I remember Tokyo from the very moment I landed at Narita Airport. The first name I saw there was the name board of Ma Cafe, a Coffee Shoppe. I was through the customs very quickly and was taken care of by the travel agency in to a luxury coach. The first impressions were rerrific, with the landscape unfolding with the ... read more

One last tale from Mussoorie before we continue. David's love affair with the local monkey population came to an abrupt end days before leaving when one wayward monkey hurled a half eaten mango at him. Worse still was that he (David not the monkey) was wearing a sparkly new white shirt bought only the day before. At first David thought a man who had just thrown a banana skin on the road was the culprit but the man quickly pointed skyward and, laughing, just said "monkey". We believed him and walked off, with one of us covered in old manky mango pulp. So..onwards...to Calcutta Hardcore travelers that we are, we have just spent 7 days in a super luxurious room in one of India's finest hotels. Costing little more than a travel inn, the Oberoi Grand ... read more

Yes its still mad here in India. The last month through Rajasthan and UP have been an experience to say the least. Since the last blog we left Pushkar and headed eastish to the blue city of Jodhpur which has an excellent fort and we met lots of really lovely people here but that is the total of my positive remarks about that city (!!!) Then we headed north to the desert to Jaiselmer. This city is amazing. You actually get to stay in the old fort. The fort rises out of the desert so majestically you could imagine that it is a couple of hundred years ago. Inside the walls are little pokey streets and lanes filled with guest houses and little tourist shops and restaurants. But its also filled with peoples homes and children ... read more

Hope you are all well. I was very sick on Wednesday after I sent my last mail on Tuesday night. I think it was Over Dehydration from the heat on Tuesday and also from going Non stop since I got here. I never felt so sick in ages. Didn't eat a thing all day and was aching all over .. and I couldn't even talk (Not like me!!). Went to meet the Principle of the schools that day and to do work in 2 schools - I could barely stand. Fab schools though... considering they are in the slums!! I am AMAZED at their dedication to study, despite the fact that these are a first generation to go to school.. Was in bed by 8.30pm and Gobnait had to get me Electrolytes and Loads of water ... read more

Well, I got ere at last after my UNEXPECTED trip to Bangladesh. That was an experience anyway and great to see as it is said that the poverty there is much worse than ere... Got to Calcutta at 3.30am Saturday morn and was totally shattered as had 2 hours sleep since left house in Dublin at 5am Thursday... Was collected by Sanghita (teacher here) who took me to my hotel. I nearly cried when she left.. All I wanted was a shower and to get out of these clothes (since Thursday - when had to abandon plane in Bangladesh we were not allowed take any luggage with us, except what we had on the plane!!) - I looked into the bathroom and there was a BUCKET AND JUG. I realised then that it was safer to ... read more

About 4 months have passed since I traveled to India. But I can't forget about it. And I want to tell my experiences to anyone. So I'll write this passage. I'm 17 year-old, japanese high school student. My dream is that all children who live in all over the world never suffer from hanger, conflicts, poverty, and diseases. So I wanted to see and recognise the fact in this world. And 19th Mar 2005, I landed in Kolkata, India. In this night, I visited my host-family's house and was welcomed so gently. In this house, there are too many people. Most of these people speaked Bengali and few speake English and Japanese. But all people who lived there were extremely friendly. Next day, I visited Mother's house where I wanted to visit in this trip. ... read more

Kolkata is definitely the most modern city we have been to. The British influence is very recognizable. There have been a few brief moments when the surroundings seemed almost American, but an India-only event, like a sheep herd in the city park, brings us back to reality. I found some decent camera stores so I broke down and bought a digital camera. I just couldn't be without one. So now there will be some hopefully highly anticipated pictures on the blog. So far we have visited the Victoria Memorial, the Local art museum, the botanical gardens, and the Kali Temple. The botanical garden hosts one of the largest Banyan trees in the world. The single tree takes up an area of 400 square meters and is over 250 years old. We have also had some of ... read more

I know that it has been forever since I’ve gotten a chance to write. It’s difficult to even begin to recap the last couple of weeks except to say that I have a huge Indian family 30 kms from the Bangladesh border that will always be in my heart. I left this morning and I feel like I have left a part of the patsy that arrived two weeks ago. Coincidentally I arrived to Maslandipur during a wedding celebration for one of the 2nd cousins (and neighbors) of the family with whom I was staying. So, the first night I arrived I was invited over to dance at the neighbors house!! Which, for those of you who know me, I was in HEAVEN!! And it happened the next night, too!! And the night after that!! (At ... read more

From the first moment you get onto the streets on Kolkata you are thrown into a world that is as far away from life at home as you can possibly imagine. The smell, fumes and poverty hits you harder than the heat (which is pretty hot). I think we maybe hoped that experiencing these things would get easier, but unfortunately it wore us down until we broke and bought two flights to Nepal! This is not to say that we would want to forget the experience. Some of the architecture is amazing and although a large percentage of the people live in poverty previously beyond our comprehension, you can always find a smiling face or friends sharing a joke. They just get on with their lives regardless. I feel almost as we didn't give the place ... read more
