The flight from Delhi to Dehra Dun was really easy. The drive from Dehra Dun to the Parmarth Niketan ashram in Rishikesh, however, was a bit of an adventure. The ashram is in the foothills of the Himalayas, so the road started to twist and turn as we climbed up the hills. There was one particular spot that had a really good view, so we thought the driver was stopping to let us take a picture. We did have a wonderful view of a river gorge, but we stopped because we had a flat tire. This seems to be a regular thing here, so he had it changed in no time, and we were on our way. I took pictures of the gorge and the car, but will have to post them later. ... read more

Sushil is 49 years old and has, for the past 20 years, run a chai stall which for the last 14 years has been under a peepal tree next to the river Ganges (Ganga) in Rishikesh. He was born 100 klms away and moved here with his family in 1979 when his father, a Village Development Office with the government, was stationed there. When he was 20 and his father and family again moved, he stayed on in this ‘World Capital of Yoga’ (made famous by the Beatles in the 1960s who discovered eastern mysticism there), living and learning yoga and meditation in local ashrams for about 15 years. He was a devotee of the famous Yogeshwari Malati Bal, who gave him Mantra Diksha (described by Sushil as the real deal and ‘proper way’ unlike a ... read more

Getting our yoga on……tougher than trekking? Sadly we departed Nepal on 13 October 2011, which we truly loved visiting to enter a new chapter of our adventures in India. 1st stop was a quick night in Delhi in hotel near airport before flying back up north to Dehra Dun, near the Indian side of the Himalayas to the holy city of Rishikesh and the mighty Ganges river. Rishikesh is also a mecca for all things related to yoga with numerous ashrams and training schools and casual yoga hall classes to cater for the young foreign tourists (Israel, Austria, Belgium, Japan, . We are in a pure vegetarian, no alcohol zone here (not that this is bad) and have taken to doing very intensive ashtanga vinyasa classes (2+ hours/class). Our bodies have been so used to ... read more

nice to be weighing in at 50kg again. didn't want anyone freaking out but i was waaaaaaaaaay too skinny for a few days there. im talking emaciated. but with loose skin. grossss. need to hit gym bigtime. am doing yoga but only one of the two classes that are on offer to me each day because i am still weak and really tired from the illness and havent completely recovered. have lost so much muscle tone its quite disheartening. there is no chance i could do any man push ups. having enough difficulty with plank into chaturanga. its a huge struggle.. im shaking all over just to get down. its a big difference to the way that i used to feel about my body. i need to be gentle on myself because i was up all ... read more

so i have really wanted to update for a while now but there is just too much going on. when i sit down to write i am overwhelmed by the multitude of insights and lessons and experiences that i'm enjoying - where to start? so rishikesh totally is the epitome of all the idealistic hopes i had for my india experience. you can get whatever you want here. if you want to chill with israeli backpackers there are plenty, if you're looking for some serious yoga action its more than abundant, and beyond that the nature, the bright eyed wise men on the side of the road, the friendly locals who don't seek anything from you other than a smile, the food, THE NATUREEEEEEEEEEE. im in HEAVEN. being really sick has turned out to be a ... read more

the big kesh is the bees knees. being here fulfils every fantasy i had about my experience in india. its exactly everything i love about all the culture, people, spirituality, pace of life, warmth, shanti, , the consistency the river impresses upon everything, the clean, clear air, the outpouring of ideas and identity, this is a place to be lost for sure. im not sure that one can exactly 'find oneself'. this is something that some of my less spiritually inclined friends smirk about and i think to some extent they are very much right. you're not going to find a different self just because you are in new surroundings. the landscape and experiences can only offer you speckles of colour, they are in themselves very much meaningless. the only shift that can happen is through ... read more

And so this is officially our last night in our little village of Ramsjoula near Rishikesh. Today has been another adventure to say the least and it is with great sadness that we leave the friends we have made here behind and continue on our journey, so back on the road tommorow, and what an adventure or mission that will be. The reason is because having tried to book train tickets 3 days ago to get back to Delhi and on to Agra, it was impossible as all the trains are over booked indian style so no way of getting any kind of seat, let alone a bunk bed for the night journey. Today i have to say has been another amazing experience, as we had the pleasure of meeting a lovely local at the little ... read more

Well i must say the last few days have been eventful to say the least. Sunday was our day of our usual yoga classes so we spent most of the morning visiting an Ashram in Haridwar, a town about an hour from where we are staying in Ramsjula near Rishikesh. It was interesting to see, but not that interesting as to what actually goes on in there. It is more like a community hall, where people go for free doctor consultations, eat very low priced canteen style meals and practise yoga, as well as lodging there. Anyway the point is that we crossed paths again with some lovely people, had some laughs, took some pictures and then headed back to our little town. Once almost back is when the mission started of actually trying to get ... read more

Left Delhi early yesterday morning by road to take the supposed to be 6hr route to Rishikesh. It did however end up taking 8 hrs instead and the journey was hot, dusty, noisy from all the traffic on the road but a real experience. Our driver was very sweet and ot us there safe and sound which is the main thing. Diana and I settled in to our little room at the yoga school and we were happy that although it is very basic, it has all that is absolutely necessary for us these days! Here in Rishikesh it is much calmer than in Delhi, although everyone always seems to be busy doing stuff and the locals are lovely, lots of big smiles and lovely welcoming people. We pop over the bridge across the ganges most ... read more

Ein Sonnengruß aus Rishikesh the City of Yogis!
