I left Shimla by bus, and endured a cramped but beautiful 11-hour bus ride through the hills and down to the relatively low-lying state of Uttaranchal. I was heading for Rishikesh, a small town on the holy Ganga river. Rishikesh is a major pilgrimage site for Hindus, being near the source of the Ganga and therefore home to several major temples. It is also known in the west as the place where the Beatles came when they went all weird and spiritual, and today attracts western tourists in their droves, who come to meditate, practice yoga or simply soak up the vibe. As a devout athiest, I wasn't here to do any of the above - I just wanted to enjoy the fresh mountain air some more and kayak in the clean, cool waters of this ... read more

Sorry everyone. I have been home for about 6 weeks now and have been meaning to update my blog but have been sick. Irony that's for sure! I travel all around India and don't get sick and once back in Australia get bronchitis and am at present on my fourth course of antibiotics. Bugger!!! Leaving Dharamsala. It was very sad leaving Dharamsala and all the wonderful friends that I had made but it was also wonderful getting to the Ashram. Such a beautiful and for me luxurious place. I am sure that I was a guru in a past life as I take to ashram living like a duck to water as they say. I shall be back again next year. DEFINATELY!... read more

Good Day Following on our journey from Delhi, we arrived at Haridhwar at 1600 hours about 8.5 hours by car. On arrival we checked in at the Sun Hotel about half a kilometre from the River Ganges. Haridhwar is at the base of the Shiwalk hills is a town of temples, ghats and ashrams. Its location at the point where the Ganges leaves the Himalayas to begin its journey across the plains, makes it a particularly holy place. Every 12 years the kumbh festival attracts millions of pilgrims who come and bathe in the river. Our purpose for this trip was to participate in the Ganga Arthi on the river Ganges which is performed every day in the evening about 19h00 in front of thousands of devotees and tourist. We left our hotel at 18h00 hours and assebled ... read more

Another blog entry within 2 weeks of another!?!?! it cant be true. After Pushkar, Meredith and i made our way to Agra and the great Taj Mahal. The train from Ajmer to Agra is a story in itself as it left at 4am and we had to make our way to Ajmer from Pushkar (half an hour) to catch the train. We booked a cab with our hotel for 3am, it was on time (thankfully) and then got to the train station just in time to jump on and hop onto our top bunks for some (or in my case none) sleep. at 11am we arrived in Ajmer and found a decent hotel within a block from the Taj. you can sit on the roof and see most of the white marble! We caught up on ... read more

… SPIRITUAL WALK IN THE HIMALAYAS From 25th September to 10th October 2009 A two week 200 km spiritual walk in the Himalayas to the source of the river Ganga, Gomuk and a beautiful trek along the old pilgrimage route from Gangotri to Kedarnath. This Spiritual Walk is being organised by the Buddha Smiles(India) from 25th September to 10th October 2009 This journey will combine travel by bus/car from Rishikesh upto the motorable base camps/villages and further distances will be covered by walking in the high mountains. RISHIKESH The train to Rishikesh from Varanasi was an extra long journey. It seemed to take forever! We were on the train for 22 hours, but despite this, it was really quite pleasant, and in our berth there were a number of young people. They were really friendly, and we had a good banter about the cricket, although whilst we were on the train England beat India at Old Trafford! From the train station in Haridwar we had the scariest Auto Rickshaw that I have ever experienced! We were quite literally afraid as the driver overtook one too many cars a little too often. I have been less scared on the Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach! We did eventually make it to Rishikesh in one piece and as soon as we arrived we knew that ... read more

Please imagine yourself waking up tomorrow in the international airport of New Delhi, India. If your anything like me your used to at least having the availability of such comforts as air conditioning, seatbelts, and being able to understand what the hell everybody around you is saying. Well, all of the sudden all that good stuff is gone. You are in a different world now. You really start to realize this a few minutes later as your cab driver casually speeds directly towards oncoming traffic and lays on the horn. This is it, you think. Your about to die already, trip is over. As you raise your hand over your eyes to block the sight of impending doom, the cab driver ducks into a gas station at the last moment, and you fake like you were ... read more

Today, after a refreshing early morning walk at a park near our guesthouse and a lovely breakfast of toast and eggs, we set off for Rishikesh, 22 km away. The temperature at 10 a.m. was a blazing 40 degrees celsius... and during the day went up to around 45 degrees celsius... so sunscreen and caps really came in good use!! The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Limited (GMVNL) had a tourist help centre near the Lakshman Jhula.. After asking a few questions we came to know that there is a provision for rafting a few kilometres down the road... and at a place called Kaudiwala some distance away... We parked our car near the tourist center and hailed one of those famous blue autos to take us to the Lakshman Jhula, a kilometre away.. The jhula (bridge)was ... read more
