Crossing Over After insisting the driver take me to the agreed destination and stop trying to drop me at his friends' guest houses, we arrived in Laskshman Jhula. He tried to drop me at the edge of town, I didn't know where I was but high up on a hillside I knew I wasn't at the bridge I'd asked for. I refused to leave until he dropped me where we agreed and he begrudgingly took me into town. He dropped me atop the steps to the bridge, I paid him and ignored his demands for more money as I walked down the bustling, bright, shop lined steps towards the bridge. I asked some French travellers if I was heading the right way and they confirmed I was. The place was very lively, the atmosphere was warm ... read more

Blogging Away The following morning I was awake for a long time before I managed to haul myself out of bed; I was feeling a bit off and so lay around for a while. To my surprise, when I got to my feet and checked the time, it was only 8.30am. No sooner was I up and about however, than I felt my stomach turn in a way that was becoming familiar. After a short while in my room it felt safe to go out for breakfast, but I stayed close by. I went to the café I'd sat in on my first night in Rishakesh, with the seating on the floor and ordered a full breakfast of toast, scrambled egg and fried vegetables. As I waited for my food, I called the ashram I'd been ... read more

Woo hoo! Here I go again with my inane ramblings, sitting in a net cafe in Rishikesh, gotta type quick cos the india vs sri lanka match starts in a coupla hours, and I still gotta do some jobs and have lunch before going to watch it with my homeboys from Little Buddha, a chilled out cafe up the road.....The India pakistan match was a corker(arch rivals, the country was in a mood of anticipatory excitedness!); I was staying in Vashisht, only a few hours from Chandigardh, where the match was held, and everyone was proper hyped about india winning! Everyone took a half day off work, shops and schools closed, even local government officials rescheduled meetings so that everyone could sit glued to the TV.......much fun! So where did we leave off? been meaning to ... read more

Driving the hairpin bends of the Himalaya roads is not an experience for the fainthearted. The narrow roads cling to the side of the mountain, with long sharp drops to the side. As a passenger in a jeep – without seatbelts, naturally – I clung to the seat in front as the driver casually took a call on his mobile whilst overtaking an oil tanker around a blind corner. Which was nice. We were travelling from Rishikesh, self-billed yoga capital of India. Certainly there are a lot of dreadlocked hippy types in this town by the Ganges. There's more yoga and meditation than you can shake a stick at, and someone called Nigel advertises hypnotherapy and numerology on the local noticeboards. There’s certainly no shortage of gurus. Rishikesh is famous as the place the Beatles came ... read more

A tour to India’s Yoga capital Rishikesh is always full of pleasant surprises, as it offers so much in its vicinity. Sacred Ganga River on the foothill of great Himalayas, whole lot of adventure sports to explore, and feel the lifestyle of a city where religion is very much embedded in their daily rituals. There are few who have already devoted their life to a greater cause and the rest have a piece of it, but everybody is into this. As the day started either people prefer to take a holy dip in Ganga or pay their respect by simply visiting the ghats. This is the beauty of Hinduism where we worship every aspect of nature, be it river, trees, mountains, forests even animals. This practice is at its best in Rishikesh. Foreigner too are seems ... read more

Rishikesh Dev Bhoomi ( Land of God) Rishikesh 24 Kms. from Hardwar. Located in the laps of lower Himalayas, and is surrounded by scenic beauty of the hills on three sides with Holy Ganga flowing through it. The whole place is considered to be sacred as it is believed that meditation at this place leads to attainment of salvation. There are many temples-some ancient, some new along the river Ganges. Rishikesh is important not only as pilgrimage centre closely associated with the Ramayana, but also as home for many important centres of Hindu religious thought and spirituality, and as a very great Yoga Centre. There are a great many ashrams and Yoga institutes here. Rishikesh is also the gateway and the start-off point for journeys to important religious places like Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamu ... read more

The End of a Dream. Beatrice was filled with joy and a degree of trepidation when she at last set food in India. This was something that she had wanted to do for a very long time, but family responsibilities and a career had not made it possible, until now. She knew that the poverty would be difficult to cope with but she also knew that pretending it didn’t exist was not an option either. The village was basic. No running water in any of the small dark dirt, homes and certainly no electricity. Their animals, mostly goats slept in a corner of the one room houses with them at night on a bed of straw. But oh the welcome! These poor people who seemed almost forgotten by the rest of the world wanted to share ... read more

Yesterday morning I got up at my usual time of 5a.m. for yoga, but when I saw the mist laying like a gossamer blanket I decided to take photographs instead. The spider webs were stunning. Yes I am still frightened of spiders but the webs looked too exquisit to miss. Although I dislike them, these little creatures are truly amazing architects. Click on the photos to enlarge them and get a better look at these works of art - the webs, not my photos! Not a lot to say, just feeling wonderful in this peaceful place. ... read more

So as I was saying... Rishikesh. I didn't really plan on coming here (though to be fair, I didn't really plan on anything) but I wanted to get out of Delhi and Rishikesh, with it's chilled reputation and location a mere night train away, seemed an obvious choice. It's calmer and cooler than Delhi. I like it. I spent most of my first day here asleep because I just hadn't managed it on the night train (not the train's fault, think I'm still just getting over jetlag and the total ruination of my body clock after Glastonbury). Followed this with a bit of shopping to try and rectify my total packing failure (new camera but no memory card, no towel, no shoes other than mum's flipflops, bikini top but no bottoms, only three pairs of knickers...). ... read more

So I'm in Rishikesh, a 'spiritual' 'town in the hills on the Ganges which has been attracting Westerners of a hippyish inclination ever since the Beetles stayed here in an Ashram to write the White album. The night train from Delhi was just fine. Purchased my ticket from the specially designated, uncrowded, blissfully air-conditioned foreign tourists information center at New Delhi station. Staff spoke English and I even paid in Sterling at the correct exchange rate. So easy! Had to mission it across town to Old Delhi station to catch the actual train, a journey made more entertaining by the fact that the Motor-Rkshaw guy let me have a go at driving. Get behind the wheel (well, handles) of one of those things and you begin to understand why people drive them the way they do. ... read more
