LAURIE I'm sitting here in the Ecodorm in the Pitchandikulim Bio Resource Centre. (PBRC). It's a bit cooler today only about 30C. It was such a lurch from winter in the mountains to the pre monsoon heat of India. We've been here about a week and it's been exhausting. Just starting to have energy again. There's a lovely view from our room into the Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest. Pitchandikulim is an environment education centre which focusses on reafforesting in the local area with this local indigenous forest. But they are doing so much more as we've discovered. They are also helping a group of local villages to develop sustainably. They have built an environment education centre and toilets at the local high school and a number of women's centres. They have helped replant a community forest ... read more

Vanakam. Sak yama? (Hello, how are you? In tamil - the language of the south) So i'm going into my 1st week of Auroville - the conceptual town that the Mother has created - with the foundation that everyone works/thinks as a collective whole w/no ownership, & not as separate people from different countries. It's been very, what's the word, interesting. Meeting ppl who have lived in this town from 30 years +. And it's really cool to hear the blood, sweat, & tears that went into building this town - as when it was first being settled, this region of tamil nadu was virtually turning into a desert. There were forests before, but b/c it is so flat & dry, it quickly dried up. And eventually, only the poorest of poor lived in this area ... read more

I happened to arrive in Auroville, quite by mistake, the year of it's 40th anniversary... This place is quite a gem and even if every stone will reveal a few worms if you look hard enough as you dig them up, this has been a delightful discovery... the City the Earth needs... For us guests, this is a place where to enjoy peace and tranquillity, a place where you can practice yoga and meditation in the most sublime surroundings, a place where you can attend many interesting workshops and receive the most wonderful treatments... The food is delicious - alcohol and drugs are strictly forbidden... On February 28th, Auroville's birthday was celebrated at the amphitheatre with a big bonfire just before dawn.... thousands of people came - you could still see a few stars, the birds ... read more

ANGLAIS Auroville. An experiment in human unity according to the blurb... ... . After 4 weeks or so as guests we're not sure what the results of the experiment are. We've seen no love-ins or any sacrifices, so it's safe to say that it's not a cult, (if it is it's a rubbish one) but it is slightly creepy that almost everywhere you look there are pictures of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo, the late spiritual leaders/founders of Auroville. Overall it's been good being here. We've met some really welcoming and generous people, had time to meet with locals and Aurovillians (there is a difference) and will leave with good memories and having learned something: Nat, that she likes being and is a... read more

We planned to be in Auroville for 2 weeks at the most, and have ended up being here for 2 1/2 months. It's such a crazy place of juxtapositions and contradictions, crazy loons and the most sane down to earth people I've ever met. It's really inspiring and really frustrating but whatever you need to face, will somehow present itself to you. We spent an intense month working with the Colours of Nature, to help them launch their brand new line of jeans - 100 percent eco friendly, hand dyed, hand loomed etc etc. I ended up doing a lot of writing, writing press releases and writing the entire blurb for the website. It was a great experience, working alongside Jesus and Ruby who run the company, Simar, Jigme and Sahil the designers and Anita who ... read more

I just discovered I never published this for some reason so here it is now... We're starting to really get into this whole idea of coincidences and things cropping up just as you want them to. So many people in Auroville have told us to trust that things will happen if you really want them to. People say they ask the Divine for what they want and they get it, somehow, in some form. It sounds really ideal, and a little unlikely, but then this does seem to be happening here. Whenever we have doubts or questions or quandaries, within a day, we seem to find ourselves talking to someone who answers us, without us even mentioning it to them. The whole point of our trip around the world was to go where the wind blows, ... read more

Its been a while since we last blogged. After Mamallapuram we travelled south with Ryan and Neal to Pondicherry. Pondicherry is a bizarre cross between India and France, where we stayed in a vaguely seedy hotel over a definitely seedy bar. Pondicherry is very clean and middle class and it was a nice place to relax a while. After a few days of relaxation and lots of games of cards with Ryan and Neal, they left, as they only had a week left in India. We then headed into Auroville, "an experiment in human unity", founded on the ideas of a guru called The Mother. In Pondicherry we had bumped into a girl we had met first in Mamallapuram, who was very enthusiastic about a community called Sadhana forest so this is where we headed and ... read more
