Hello We took a 5 AM train into Mumbai and arrived in the early afternoon. We took taxis down to the India Gate and then just did the lonely planet walking tour. We saw Victoria station, The Prince of Wales museum, the town hall, and lots more. The city looks really European, much more than any other place I have seen in India. The buildings all remind me of London, but then there are all the things that make you know you are still in India. We went out for drinks to some bar and they actually had Bacardi Breezers, I was not sure where I was for a second. Then the lounge singer started and we made a hasty exit, haha. It was Saturday night in Mumbai so we decided to try a club that ... read more

One of the amazing things of India is how cultures and stereotypes seem to crash together, clashing and intertwining all at once. In the mornings as I go on my way to work, I'm always taken by the morning market I pass. It's not a market in the way that Safeway or Shaws is so much as it's a busy road. The smell of fresh green chilis and coriander prickle my nose as I pass amidst the large trucks, waving bicycles with ringing bells, black cabs with yellow tops and red buses. Flocks of people with impossibly large bundles resting on their heads walk between the trucks, darting between the moving vehicles that cover the street, all honking their horns. Still more people squat on the groung haggling over a particularly fresh looking bundle of curry ... read more

I was really looking forward to leaving Bombay, i really liked it but was ready for something new. The overnight train was definately an experience! I really dont want to do it again but will be tomorrow :) GREAT! Its not that bad its just i cant sleep, nose becomes blocked with dirt, all indian men staring at me waiting for my shawl to slip just a little bit so they can see me and people coughing up their guts every few minutes. Lovely. Got to Aurangabad at 5 in the morning, so still feel like we havent recovered from the jet lag. Hotel is the pits, looks like something out of resident evil, BUT the area is really nice and alot less hassel than in bombay. Wondered round yesterday and saw the town, not much ... read more

Let me tell you about my trip from Pushkar (in Rajasthan) to Mumbai. It started off with a government bus from Pushkar to Ajmer. The best way I can describe the scene when people in India try to get on a government bus (or a second class train) is by comparing it to an exodus scene from a Holocaust film. I know, the comparison seems inappropriate, even offensive, but allow me to paint you a vague picture of the getting on the bus scene. People are crowding around the door, pushing to get to the front so they can get on. Being on the steps to get in doesn't free you from people who will willingly claw you off the bus (regardless of your age or gender or physical disabilities) in order to get on themselves. ... read more

Well, the good news is we are still well and having a good time. Classic Claire and Marc we got the wrong day to catch our coach to Bombay from Goa so we got a bonus day at Benaulim beach which turned out to be fantastic. Also it meant we got more Goan bus riding - an ace experience. So now we are in Bomaby, finding it a lot easier than before....seasoned travellers! well trying to be. A 37 hr train ride to calcutta awaits us now, but will be a welcome break from the sunshine for those of us who get toasted in the shade! All in all unforgetable experiences all round. Bring it on!... read more

The day after we went to Ellora, we all piled into a van and a car, luggage and all, to head out to Chahardi. Turns out that Chahardi is a village where some of Purnima’s family (the Patil family) lives and it’s a real village. Dirt roads, animals, farms, no mobile reception and the like. The Patil family owns the 3 largest houses in the village, they are literally room after room, courtyard after courtyard. The original tour I got from Ravi Bhao* was, “it’s like a train, room leads to room leads to room, like the coaches in a train following each other.” Looking at Purnima’s family and then looking at Eric and saw an Indian version of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. More and more members of Purnima’s family kept coming up, I couldn’t ... read more

So Mom and Dad reported complaints on my lack of updates recently, so I hope you all are ready for a lot, cause I’ve been busy. Last night I landed on (I’d say sunk into, but my mattress is far from being so soft) my bed here in Mumbai for the first time in over two weeks, but before I can tell you about my relief to be home, perhaps I should fill you in on my past two weeks. A lot happened, so I broke it all up into several different blogs. If you plan on reading them all now (best of luck) now is a good time to stop, grab some popcorn or a drink or find a more comfortable chair to sit in before continuing to read. It’s ok, I’ll wait. …………………………. Ready ... read more

Great flight over with Virgin, took a record 8.15hrs and got bulkhead seating - so loads of room, lush. Arrived in Mumbai lunchtime and got a fast car into town and hotel on Marine Drive with airy rooms and balconies over-looking the Arabian Sea. Mama survived the flight well, but little sleep so well tired when we arrived, so packed her off to bed for R & R the first evening. We have been well entertained and looked after for the past 2 days by Tarla our Indian lady friend, who Mama had not seen for 30 years! It was quite an occassion and she has since treated us for drinks and dinner at the Bombay Cricket Club several times, where she is a life member, so we have been well spoilt. Yesterday we were living ... read more

On the streets and the sidewalks, at the beach and in the markets, train stations and private homes, there was one constant in India. The cow. They wander with leisurely freedom where and when they like. For Indians, this is normal; they are part of the scenery, the natural environment. For us, this was a great source of amusement, and the novelty never wore off. Instead, our curiosity and fascination with the status of this animal grew. We sought a better understanding of the Holy Cow. Clearly we could not explain to most Indians the Canadian attitude toward the cow. Our tendency to see this animal in terms of its eventual fate (juicy steak) would be impossible to describe, and probably quite disturbing for the majority of Indians. As long time vegetarians, Lindsay and I felt ... read more

Geo: 19.048, 73.0828On Thursday, October 20th, after cramming a year's-worth of preparation into just a few short months, we left for our year-long journey across South Asia and Africa. With a one-way ticket, we boarded the first of three flights that would get us to Mumbai, India. After almost two days of flying (with time changes), which included a six-hour walkabout in Hong Kong, we arrived in Mumbai on Saturday. Our friend from Portland, Stacie Shelton, and her boyfriend, Mukesh Sen, were there to greet us and help us navigate through the touts and taxi drivers that wait at the airport for tourists like us. At 9PM at night, there was still traffic and it took a while for us to get to our new home for the next three months. We are living in a ... read more
