One other interesting incident… I went for a dawn walk the other day on the grounds of the Bhabha Atomic Research Center, which is the birthplace of the Indian Atomic Bomb. The research facilitiy/reactor has well manicured grounds and streets where the workers live. It is a nice place to take a walk, and the people I'm staying with go there often in the morning for a little exercise. There is a security checkpoint you must cross on foot to get into the grounds. Going in, I just walked right in beside my fiancee and his father. There an no cars allowed in and some landscaping, so it really is a good place to walk. I was really enjoying the walk. We saw one guy walking with a security guard on each side and a small ... read more

Geo: 19.048, 73.0828A common question we are asked is, "how do you find Mumbai?" That is a question with a complicated answer, and here we will answer it for you (if you too have asked this question). I think we both have liked and disliked this city. We are in admiration of the people who make this city their home and live their life here. Honestly, we couldn't do it and we take relief in knowing we have our home to return to in Portland. Being here has been exhausting, frustrating, exhilarating and immensely rewarding. This is a city where a sense of humor is a must. We are not always able to summon up that humor in the moment; and we are not always proud of our reactions, but in the end, we find a ... read more

I made it here Monday night, the 26th. There were no problems with the flight or anything. We arrived in Zurich about a half hour late and really had to rush to get to the next plane. But we made it and landed in Mumbai only about an hour late. I spent the first day here looking at the hotel where all my family will stay for my wedding in August. It is near the airport and small, but quite nice with all the features of a larger hotel. I think the wedding will practically take over the hotel. Then I went to buy a Langa, which is a traditional Indian dress. A langa is comprised of a long skirt and a short blouse that ends just below the bra. They come in all colors with ... read more

Geo: 19.048, 73.201In the five weeks since we last wrote about our work at AVNI, much has transpired. As we related, Justin's project was to assess the impact of HIV/AIDS on people over 49 years-old - both those that are HIV-positive themselves, but also those that are caregivers, "the affected," for infected family members. As we said, currently, all prevention and treatment efforts in India are currently aimed at younger age groups. So exploring this impact in India has not been done before. Before designing the questionnaires needed to survey the "affected" and "infected", I (Justin) had to learn quite a bit about the subtlies of the epidemic amongst the elderly in India. After talking with leaders of HIV/AIDS relief organizations, he learned that there are quite a number of stigmas and barriers faced by Indian ... read more

Hello! I have recently returned from a 10 week business trip to India and loved it so much, I've decided to move there for 1-2 years (maybe longer)! I was hoping someone who has just upped and moved to India could provide some information or share their experiences. My company is not going to send anyone over there for such a long term assignment so I am going to have to quit my job and find one over there. I would greatly appreciate any advice! ... read more

Back here in Mumbai after spending a lot of time in Karnataka, visiting a few temples or so. Bangalore was full on and to be honest an absolute relief to get out of. In places like Bangalore India is travelling at 150 miles and hour but most of the infrastructure and population can't keep up with it. It did have 'pubs' tho' which was kinda nice but that soon wears off when you have to keep all five senses switched when you walk anywhere to avoid being run down, mowed over by gangs of youths, death defying pavement pot holes and incessant screaming car and rickshaw horns ... get the picture!!! Had a very relaxing Christmas here but was also very surprised to see how Christmassy Mumbai appeared. Christmas trees, decorations, taped carols being played in ... read more

We arrived in Mumbai (aka Bombay) on the 23rd December and have stayed over the Christmas period. The city has a small but vocal (and rich) Christian community and so there were quite a few Santas and reindeer to be seen. Even the Hindu population regard Christmas as a special day, an excuse to eat cakes and do some shopping- not that they need much encouragement to do either. Now that our tour has finished, the pace of sightseeing has slowed a little. There are no forts or temples to see in Mumbai, but there is a beach, good restaurants, and the buzz that comes from being in a big city. New Delhi may be the capital, but Mumbai is the home of big business, Bollywood, and the 'beautiful people'. We're staying in Colaba, which is ... read more

The net amazes me every single day. Its so damn funny that somewhere on the face of a planet is a wonderful person waiting to be discovered. It has happened to me so many times. That a moment ago I was unaware of the person's existence and a moment later, I find that here is a person that has so many similar tastes and likes that we instantly hit it off. This coincidence has happened to me not once but several times. In fact, some of the people that I have met like this are till date my best buddies... I met another such lady today......I hope we become friends... time will tell. ... read more

Its been a year since the great wave splashed the shores of south-east Asia claiming a million lives. The natural calamity wrecked havoc in the tourist hub of the sub-continent and hit the shores when they were packed to the all-time high. It was the new year season and resorts across all the beaches were packed with tourists. Even the smallest of shacks and street-side hutments were packed with tourists. That is what hit the tragedy hard. No one had the time to get out and neither was the place equipped to handle that kind of a sudden tragedy. It has been exactly a year and as people from all over the world gather to pay their respects, let us all say a silent prayer for the souls that were lost and the for the ... read more
