Had a big lie in , packed and went to Gourmet restaurant for brunch (tomato soup and cheese on toast). Wandered up to the email place- spent 3 hours there. Emailed lots of people and told lonely planet about the farce aka Shree Maya and the rickshaw rip off merchant in pune. Wandered back to Gourmet place and got a banana pancake. Hired a rickshaw bloke and left the shit hole at 18:30 on a sleeper bus- interesting layout- 2 share a bunk which consists of a walled 6ft by 4ft room- which is one complete matress and at the end of the matress is a pillow moulded into it - comfy enough although not alot of space for 2 peole, 4 bags and trainers. Stopped twice for drinks, loo and .Appeared to have slept some ... read more

up nice and early! - knackered! Got to the train station and found our carriage easily- we are getting good at this!Only problem with the train was our seat (infact most people's seates were not together! we sat together anyway!) Luckily the person who was ment to sit with me (Johnny Normel) was cool about sitting somewhere else " no problem" he said in a loud american accent !! (no he was not american!) Had breakfast on the train- veg cutlet sarnies !! Read a book (nearly the whole one!!) Johnny Normel spoke to us for the last half an hour- Johnny (Ab) normel would have been more appropriate- very loud indian gentleman who looked like a "rock" star!! Apparently he is a "small star" of tv and film- had a good laugh with him!Booked into ... read more

Arrival at mumbai CT for 08:00- bloody taxi drivers took the piss! They wanted us to pay Rs 275- we had been told not to pay anymore than Rs100. Eventually after much assertion we got a bloke to put his meter on and "quelle suprise"it cost Rs 150 ( it only cost that much because he added a baggage charge! - sneaky sod!) Got to bentleys hotel and showed us 3 rooms, none of which had bathrooms- we chose the middle sized one... which isn't large and bri thinks is claustrophobic. The bathroom is just down the corridor. It cost us Rs 850- not exactly cheap but it will do! Unpacked and went for a walk. Fell upon Leopolds cafe, which is like bruccianis in preston! Had poached eggs on toast!! Bombay is very different from ... read more

I couldn't have imagined that we'd get our visas and make it to the airport as painlessly as we did. We were even early, after deciding against an expensive taxi and choosing the public bus instead. We had an overnight flight ( = no sleep) and we arrived in Mumbai at about 4am. We made the airport our sanctuary until daylight and then had to figure a new way downtown (the guidebook had old bus info.) It was evident on the bus that Indians love to rush, push and crowd each other but I was unprepared for the train station at rush hour. Bunches of men, hanging out the train doors by one hand as the train arrived, leapt off before it even stopped and then the stampede began! One crowd was shoving to get off, ... read more

The Final Entry of Nigel Fox dated February 9, 1948 ENTRY 43 -- Clouds of Glory The last thing I recall were his remarks about his watch. I left in a daze, feeling energised, euphoric, omnipotent. One of my episodes must have come upon me. I remember little of the hours or days between my departure, and the awareness that I was sitting on a bench near the train station in my 'English dress', with a sun helmet on my head. My mind cleared momentarily as I sat waiting. Still in my euphoric state, my gaze was drawn to an arresting sight between two vendors, one selling samosas, the other selling chai. There stood the little Sikh boy and his mother, the air round them seeming somehow washed clean in an otherworldly way. The child was ... read more
