ajanta caves
view of some of the caves up nice and early! - knackered! Got to the train station and found our carriage easily- we are getting good at this!Only problem with the train was our seat (infact most people's seates were not together! we sat together anyway!) Luckily the person who was ment to sit with me (Johnny Normel) was cool about sitting somewhere else " no problem" he said in a loud american accent !! (no he was not american!) Had breakfast on the train- veg cutlet sarnies !! Read a book (nearly the whole one!!) Johnny Normel spoke to us for the last half an hour- Johnny (Ab) normel would have been more appropriate- very loud indian gentleman who looked like a "rock" star!! Apparently he is a "small star" of tv and film- had a good laugh with him!Booked into the Shree Maya for Rs 375 - room is fine, although "terrace garden" is in need of a lick of paint. Had fun getting a cheese veg sandwich! Took 40 mins and much confusion. Turned out to be a salad sandwich with a smattering of cheese! Out into aurangabad- usual hassle from rickshaw drivers- one followed us all the way to the tourist place! Booked
sculpture at ajanta
one of numerous amazing sculptures a tour to ajanta caves from the most bizarre tourist booking place- 4 people working there- none had good english and all were indifferent if we booked something or not! We then went to the official indian tourist office- very very helpful bloke- sat and got lots of info. Back to the hotel; slept for a while and out to "food lovers"- very hot curry was had- nice enough place, if not a bit cheesy! Got a 40%!o(MISSING)ff voucher for our next visit (valid for 6 years!!!)
15/10/02 Up at 06:30 - had our "eat as much as you can brekkie for Rs 45- which was minimized as the cornflakes had salt in them (eugh!) and we only had 15 mins to cook and eat our toast!
Got to the bus departure point- asked if the park up was to ing to Ajanta caves "yes" - got on the bus, but then we were apparently sat in the wrong seat "what number are you? this is not 7 & 8... you will have to move(there were no numbers on any of the seats!!!)- we moved, however that was not right for them either ( someone was sat in

a painting which can be found in cave 1 the alleged 7 & 8 but they would not move!!) Eventually (after an english couple were told they were on the wrong bus)- we went to investigate and found we had also been on the wrong bus( we had a jeep!!) We walked off the bus and told "them" that they were all incredibly rude and got on our luxurious transport! We were with another english couple and an indian family. Took 3 hours to get to ajanta. Met up with another group of people who were on "classic tours" and for Rs 20 each we got a guide. The caves are amazing and date from around 200BC to 650 AD . They had been abandoned when bhuddism had declined and were refound in the 1800s by a british hunting party! There are 30 caves in total and many have intricate sculputres and paintings. We spent 3 hours looking at them; the setting is very picturesque. Had packed lunch , which was bloody awful (left most of it!). Returned at 17:15- arranged to meet 3 couples that we had met at the caves at "smiles" in Nirhal bazaar. Had a good, but very spicy meal- had to wait bloody ages for
ellora caves
part of the world's largest monolithic sculpture- it took 7000 men ,150 years mango lassis! After our meal we found a restaurant and sat and had beers until 10:30 when one of the couples had to on a sleeper to Mumbai. A good evening ws had
*Festival this evening (part of navritan, which leads to diwali ) flowers everywhere; very colourful
16/10/05 Up and at them by 9:00- went to ellora cave via public transport (not too bad and only Rs 14 each) Ellora has 34 caves and is not as old as Ajanta; there are bhuddist , hindu and jain caves. The most amazing cave is the kailasa temple (world's largest monolithic sculpture). As soon as we got to cave 2, we saw one of the couples from yesterday (Ben and Nita)- we went around the caves with them- awesome caves; better than yesterday as more impressive sculptures and of course the monolithic sculpture- cannot imagine how they did it! Had a good laugh with Ben and Nita and thy offered us the use of their car with them , which was well cool. Had lunch with then in a not so fast food place! before heading back to aurangabad; absoloutley pissing it down - huge pools of water everywhere. Thought we

Eventually hailed a rickshaw and eventually found an internet cafe; emailed and then walked to smiles- difficult due to the huge pools of water and a power cut! Had a cool meal and went back to watch star movies - teen flick!
