Yesterday, Sunday, was a pretty full day but I would have to say the evening was the most memorable of my time in Mumbai. Let's just start at the beginning of the day with my trip to Elephanta Island and go from there. Elephant Island Long, hot, sweaty ferry ride Check! Now I've seen it! I had a nice late start in the morning (yes, I really like to sleep in!) Well, not too late (8:30) since I had to be down for breakfast by 9AM. :) There is an 80 year old lady from what I gather that lives at the Y. I had exchanged a few words with her the night before at dinner so I thought what the heck, I'll see if she wants some company over breakfast. Well she really welcomed it ... read more

Neverending tour On & off. Where do we go? Need to learn Hindi! I decided the best way to see some of Mumbai was to sign myself up for a City tour. The first tout that approached me must have thought I had sucker written on my forehead because he quoted me 1150Rs for a three hour private tour by car and then gave me a "special" deal of 850Rs for being his first sucker (I mean customer) of the day. Then I told him I'm not spending more than 400Rs and said that I'd go the cheaper bus option. Even over there they tried to charge me 200Rs but I told him I was quoted 150Rs previously...betcha the going rate is 100Rs?? Oh well. Since I had about 1/2 hour before the bus took off, ... read more

Another sleep in Wander the grounds of Sangam Did lots of reading. “Miss Congeniality 2” was way better than expected. Although I'd probably wait for the video (or rather DVD) release. We went to the INOX theatre and I would have to say it was super modern and newer looking then any of the theatres at home. Here are a couple of observations about watching a movie in India. 1) They have assigned seating! 2) There is always an intermission. Guess it is a good chance for a bathroom break and also lets you refill on the snacks...cuz you know, it's all about the snax! 3) Half of the theatre arrives just as the lights go down. As for today, I took it really easy. First another sleep in til 9AM. Then I dilly dallied getting ... read more

I have a free day Off to do some exploring Pool in the PM. Nice to be able to sleep in a bit. Not so nice waking up all hot and sticky though. I decided to venture into town and check out the Aga Khan Palace (home to the National Ghandi Museum). The Museum wasn't very impressive but it was nice to read a bit of history and some of what Gandhi did in his life. Once again I am so not knowing when it comes to these things! Then I wandered into town and roamed the shops of Mahatma Gandhi Road (also shortened to MG Road). Escaped with only purchasing one bag :) and was on the internet for a bit. Nice and speedy service and I'm now a member with iway. Whatever that means. ... read more

Rip off taxi man! Walk away. Get another. Train station real close. Had an early morning start to catch the Intercity train from Mumbai CST to Pune. The taxi driver outside the hotel tried to charge me 50Rs for a 3 K ride. Thank goodness I asked Anand the reservations dude at the Y yesterday and he told me that it should be 25...no more than 30. The taxi man cum rip off artist only came down to 40 and let me walk when I only offered 30. Oh well. His loss! The next guy told me 50 and I offered 25 after saying it was too much and then he agreed right away. Must have been the first customer of the day or he was still ripping me off. lol Great to see that there ... read more

Made it to Mumbai Lots of people and cars BUT Less hectic feel here. Took an overnight train from New Delhi last night. Man was that a luxurious train ride or what. I was prepared and had all of these snacks (chips, biscuits, masala munch to name a few) but they weren't at all necessary since we had tea time and about 6 or 7 snacks arrived with my masala chai! Then came dinner which was two courses and soup...veggies, pasta and potato things, soup with breads, daal, potatoes & spinach, rice, chappati and poppodam. Plus yoghurt and dessert to top it all off! Man was I stuffed after that. The sleeper car was pretty big as well...very spacious and the bathrooms were even clean the entire journey! I had three other "cabin mates" 1) Someone ... read more

We arrived in Aurangabad at 6am, stinky and smelly since we had slept all night in the train. However, as we dismounted from the train we realised it didn't matter how bad we smelt, because this city smelt even worse. Take 1 tonne of rotten vegetables, smush it together we a few million decaying fish and then set the whole thing on fire and you kind of start to get the smell of Aurangabad. This city should really be called A-rank-a-bad. The main reason we were in Aurangabad was to see the famous Ellora temple caves. This consisted of 34 temples that were literally hewn out of the side of a mountain. And they weren't small. The biggest was in fact as large as a 10 story building and probably just as deep. These were temple ... read more

My first impressions of mumbai (bombay) was driving in a dodgy taxi with a top speed of 11km/h through what I thought were backstreet alleyways but were infact the main roads of this confounded city. It was 2am and not a creature was on the street except for the occassional stray dog. Garbage was strewn on every corner, the air stunk of rotten sewerage, and I found myself asking what I was doing here. My first adventure involved catching the train down to Bombay downtown. I decided to be thrify and travel second class on the train. Terrible mistake. In india, the local trains travel with their doors open so that they can cram as many people in (leaving the doors open allows people to precariously dangle out the sides of the train). People have NO ... read more

...or Bombay nightmares, as as this was not our most enjoyable stop. First we endured a 15 hour overnight bus ride from Goa - not nice :-( Then just as we thought we'd found a nice place to stay (Apollo guest house), our room was located next to the side of a rubbish dump in an alleyway, so a funky smell came seeping through the AC!!! And all kinds of bugs were crawling through the sink.... nuff said! After we both started to get a bit sick, physically and mentally, we spent some extra bucks on another room. We had a some good and bad experiences during our 5 day stop in Bombay... Bad first - The pollution was extreme and there was no way of taking one deep breathe, it was just filthy... There were ... read more

Hello everyone! We're marching ever onwards - had a fantastic time in Pune, and have been in Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar (100miles south of Pume) for the last few days. We've been cycling, dancing, singing, stargazing, and generally having a wonderful time. The fruit here is amazing beyond belief - every yard has another bod selling strawberries and other juicy things - all for a few rupees a kilo! I'll be performing at the Baha'i New Year celebrations tomorrow evening in the Amphitheatre on the side of the hill above a massive and beautiful lake in this high, cool hill station. I'm working on a rap to perform, but I may be singing one of my old songs or something by my friends. Anyhow - Lowri is resting well in our room - we're both very excited ... read more
