Well namaste to you all and as a brief introduction, this trip (well, the first half anyway) is a little different than our normal travels. First of all it has incorporated many more people – namely Jane’s family - parents Ann and Peter, brothers Jack and Tom, as well as Beth who married Tom but a few weeks ago - thus the moniker of the ‘familymoon’. Secondly, we are staying in surroundings that are generally a step or two up from our normal lodgings - envision some wonderfully restored colonial houses and even the odd palace. And thirdly, instead of braving broken down public buses and the like, we have been ferried around in our very own minibus (the ubiquitous ’Tempo Traveller’) complete with driver - namely the wonderf... read more

Okay so blog writing is not my thing, specially when the internet is scarce and the time it takes to sit down and think about what to write is too much to handle. I know just excuses so here we go since November 6th and the disastrous birthday dinner... Dad and I have recovered nicely since our food poisoning ordeal although to be honest it hasn't been our last experience but by far the worst ;) Moving on from those gory details we loved Darjeeling, the tea estate hills in North East. Cold still but beautiful sights to behold and such an amazing culture. we ventured into the small town of Mirik for two days which is a cozy hill town surrounding a beautiful lake. All in all we did a lot of hiking around this ... read more

As soon when I came out from St. Francis Xavier church, I turned right and walked about 10 minutes, I finally saw the fishing village. This whole area is known as Fort Kochi. Very shady, many tall tree that umbrella the whole area giving the best shade ever on a sunny day like this. What attracted me most is the “Cheena Vala”, the Chinese Fishing Nets. The fishermen were friendly, invited me aboard their platform, having photos taken as I stood sometime watching them do the job, how the mechanism works. The fascinating thing being on board the platform is that it has a great view, good breeze and imagine myself stood above the great Arabian Sea was something I never imagine. But I did not mind the fishy smell that surround me. History wrote it ... read more

From Kochi city to Fort Kochi was quite a distance for us. My driver lost the way to Fort Kochi. We had to make some stops, asking directions and it took us some two hours to finally get into Fort Kochi. We started with St. Francis Xavier Church which I found it was actually built in year 1503 AD. It was built with wood and later it was rebuilt using stones and roofed with tiles in 1516 AD. Vasco da Gama the Portuguese navigator with his colleagues, Pedro Alvares Cabral and Alfonso de Alberquerque came to Kochi in the year 1498 AD making Kochi an important trading port in India. Vasco got the piece of land from the Rajah of Kerala thus naming the neighborhood, Fort Kochi. He built this church in dedication to St. Anthony; ... read more

As mentioned on the previous day, this Port day apparently was nothing like what most cruisers had ever experienced in terms of getting off for the day. We were all allocated the numbers the previous night before being invited to go in and get our passports checked and approved for getting off the boat. This was to all start from 7am with docking time at 8am. It was only later when we had returned to the boat that we discovered that the last person to have their passport checked was at 10:30am … If I was that person I wouldn’t have been too happy! Thankfully Roberta tipped some man and was re-allocated 1stchecking tickets … a lot nicer than our number 16 tickets, and others in our groups’ number 23’s!!! It was a 6am wake up ... read more

Disappointed, dejected, and disillusioned with my 4 drunk nights in Ooty and one drunken night in Allepy, I decided that what I needed was a vacation from this my hectic vacation. So, while my 24 hungover batch-mates flew, drove, or rode back to their respective lives, I stayed on in Kerala. In Cochin, a very kind friend of my mother’s (and now an excellent friend of mine) hosted me for another three nights. During that time, I visited Fort Kochi (by road and sea), which is a simply-must-do for so many reasons…one being its sudden Goa effect. There are quite a few homestays in this area (so no need to pester me for my friend’s address). One of which is a lovely Portuguese building which is supposedly where Vasco Da Gama himself lived in (I believe ... read more

I split off from my company and am back on the road alone now! I booked a flight back up to delhi (expensive but 6 hours of travelling verses 78...) but wanted to see Kochi first. Unfortunately I didnt factor just how long it would take to get to Kochi from Kumily! So I didnt arrive till 5pm! Still I got to have a nice evening walking round looking at the various sights and also went to a Kathakali performance. This was an interesting experience. Kathakali acting involves very mime-like facial gestures and the actors are very good really. But they don't talk and instead communicate the 'dialogue' with the most long-winded form of sign language ever!! Basically, what could have been conversed in 3-4 mins (with emotion and time to spare) took half an hour ... read more

Nautica reached Cochin, India early this morning. I was up at dawn as usual to take my hour walk around the exercise deck. I really believe that the most memorable moments from this voyage may be experiencing the beauty of the sun coming up over exotic new lands. This morning was no exception. There had been rain during the night so the air was very humid, but there was a slight breeze and calmer seas. The sun coming up over the Indian sub-continent was just awesome. A rainbow appeared out of a dark cloud mass to the west. I took that as a good omen for the day. Nautica is now in the port of Cochin, Indian. Bill is off to a overnight visit to the Taj Mahal at Agra. I couldn’t justify the cost of ... read more
