Mosquito bites 3 Sickness 0 Diarrhoea 0 So after each morning in the palace that I'm staying in - 6.30am morning newspapers 6.45am telephone- what do you want for breakfast (even though the answer is always the same...'something different, and something indian') 7.00am breakfast 7.15am telephone- your cab is outside (all the while the doorbell for the flat is loud enough to be heard in a palace, and this is all before I've had a cuppa tea!) 7.30am car drive to the hospital. I am really grateful that I am living like a queen and i have my own car and driver, but not so grateful that he waits inside casualty to pick me up to take me back to the palace. No wonder the doctors in casualty are telling the local people that I am ... read more

Day 1-2 Mosquito bites 0 Diarrhoea 0 Sickness 0 So the flight went ok, quite fast for 7 hours. A guy (who asked to sit next to his friend which was next to me) was from dehli and offered to show me around, take me to Taj Mahal etc. I thought mint, met someone already! Wasn't until i woke up with him holding my hand and his head on my shoulder that i thought....erm maybe not. Got to Dubai airport, which is the epicentre of the world btw, and then flew 3 hours or so to Kochi/Cochin-which i slept. Got my suitcase off carousel, and handle broke. It was ok though, because the wheeler-handle thingy was still working. Got my taxi, by a lovely man who only spoke Malayalam, who laughed for a good 15 minutes, ... read more

I have bitten the travel bug listening to my father's travel tales around the world. I'm sure there are many who would identify with my insatiable need to see places, meet people, eat food that are different from mine..... Come share my adventure in exploring the world!... read more

It was a Saturday night. Even though I never sleep too much on Saturday nights, I slept early this time. I forced myself to sleep. Then slowly I fell into the sleepy world dreaming about a fine sunny atmosphere to begin the next day. Everything was already planned. We’re going to Athirapally to spend the holiday. We were just two so I thought a bike trip would be appropriate for us. We’ve got two hours drive through the Valparai route to enter the Sholayar forest range and to reach this great waterfall in Kerala. That was the plan. Sunday morning, I woke up at 6 o’ clock and got dressed immediately to leave for the adventure trip. We packed some clothes as well as some food also as a precaution. All set and ready to ... read more

Varkala is a place where you will forget all your tensions and sadness while you’ll simply start grooving to the taps of the musical waves of the Varkala cliff beach. My relation with Varkala began exactly two years before. When I first heard about Varkala, I didn’t even know where it is on a map. Then when I met some people who went down there, they explained me that God is for real. Believe it or not but it’s for real. That’s what they explained to me. I didn’t understand anything from those words. But then I met another set of people who went there and they described me the meaning of immortality. This time I got really confused and those clues started haunting me. God and immortality, maybe that one connects but what about ... read more

The pages of my diary feel limp and damp. Fresh towels smell musty. Laundry dries, but only relatively speaking. The Calcutta-acquired Polos are soft and crumbly. We are kept awake by claps of thunder more deafening than any I’ve ever heard. Our movements to and from dinner are delicately gauged to try and avoid the worst of the downpours. My Mac waves the white flag and sacrifices its mouse-click capability, and the cursor develops a life of its own. The local football pitch resembles a lake; the boys play on regardless. Welcome to the early days of the monsoon in Kerala, or, as our sweet chatty host puts it the next day, the “pilot rains”, the actual monsoon being yet to come, so we’re told. We’re sceptical. A month later, I was walking down the street ... read more

It is said that India is 38 countries held together by geography. I would add that on the other hand these 38 states are divided by language, religion and topography. Kerala is one of our favorite states in this very diverse nation. As the "Queen of the Arabian Sea" Kerala has been a crossroad on the trade routes since ancient times. The Chinese came during the reign of Kublai Khan. And that is the reason that one of the first sites we see when arriving in Cochin (Kochi) are the Chinese fishing nets lining the sea channel into port. Kerala has the highest literacy rate in the nation and is very progressive in family planning and womens' issues and has been the center of the Indian spice trade for centuries. We took a tuk-tuk around to ... read more
