I grew up in the middle of northern British Columbia. Basically no one around for miles, only 2 stop lights in my town, and my high school graduation class had 7 people in total. So, now I have an incredible passion for seeing the rest of the word and meeting as many interesting people as possible!! I am taking a leave from my life here in Canada, my job, and traveling for a year...

Europe » Italy » Tuscany July 10th 2013

Italianooo! I just can't even say Italy now without using my hands and moving my voice up and down in a singsong voice. First stop was to see the leaning tower of Pisa. Shockingly it really is leaning and much bigger than pictures portray! I have no idea how it hasn't fallen over yet and I wouldn't walk on the side which it is slanted towards. No way! Mind you, that would be one way to go out...oh ya, a massive tower just fell on me. Once again, I was lucky to meet up with a Dutch friend who was on holidays in Italy, so I get to explore this country with a friend. I still love going solo in a city and just seeing who I will meet and where I can end up, but ... read more

Europe is something else! I see why thousands of people come here every year. Best of the best seems to be made/consumed/or brought here. So I left the smoking hot middle east and arrived in rainy, 13 degree weather London. I felt like an alien, because I arrived on a Friday night and the buses were full of people on their way out to the night clubs. So here i was, silently shocked seeing groups of drunk young people and thinking to myself "Geeze, this girls will catch a nasty cold in this weather...and wow that is a short skirt". Yes, I have officially become a practical grandma. Watch out Velcro sandals! Seems like I would be use to switching cultures but it took me a few days to adjust to all the white, English speaking ... read more

The holy land....Where oh where do I start?! First of all, when they say come visit in the winter, there is good reason for this advice. I've been in 48 degree heat while packing a 40 pound backpack around and to say I've been a tad sweaty is putting it mildly! I now understand why Arabs wear full head to toe coverings. So much cooler when your skin isn't getting fried to a crisp in this desert heat! So enough of the weather, let me talk about Israel! Easiest country to get into. Really! Not any problem, and they just give you a slip of paper automatically (rather than stamp your passport). Normally I'm such a keener for more stamps in my passport, but in this case, I'm ok with no proof because the fewer feathers ... read more

Middle East » Turkey June 3rd 2013

Here I didn't think Turkey could get any better and then I went to a magical land called Cappadocia which was full of fairy chimneys, kabobs and balloons! But seriously, this entire valley is full of cone/pillars which were formed thousands (some may say millions) of years ago from volcanoes. Ya know, crazy earth shifting and water rushing and hot magma lava forming insanely beautiful landscapes. And then us smart humans come along and discover a way to chip and carve cave rooms into these cones and there you have it! Thousands of old houses and churches carved out of rock which has lasted through the centuries. (they actually are nicknamed fairy chimneys because whoever found them thought fairies lived in it...as the name suggests:)Best part is people still live in these caves. K I lied, ... read more

If you know me at all, you know I fall in love with every country I visit. Turkey is no exception! This place has impressed, wowed, and awed me more than any other country (other than India perhaps). I was a tad apprehensive coming into a muslim country, and right after reading about the bombings near the Syria border, but I have never felt more safe! Truly, I would recommend this country probably above any of the other countries I have been on this trip so far (and that is saying a lot!). So before I get all carried away, let me tell you a couple of my experiences, and you can be the judge :) Instanbul...what a city! Everywhere you look is a mosque and there is more history to bore a historian. Well, perhaps ... read more

Europe » Greece » Thessaly » Meteora May 12th 2013

So here I am, on a bus heading from Greece to Turkey with Lindsay. Never thought this day would arrive when a year and a half ago we were dreaming up this adventure. My last blog, I had some rather large emotional few days and was feeling super low. Glad to say I'm over that slump and my passion and excitement for travel is back in full force!! I will say how awesome it is to travel with a friend! I love going alone and meeting new friends and putting myself out there, but there is something so great to be beside a friend who knows you and sharing the experiences. Also, while in Greece, I have hardly seen backpackers. So here is a tip, don't come here alone! Either you are old, on your honeymoon, ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens May 1st 2013

On the road again... I appologize to everyone for my lack of updating lately. I suppose staying in one place for 8 weeks made me think I had not much to write about. Now I am sitting in a tiny flat in Athens eating a Greek salad (yes, I thought it fitting to order one, regardless if I was craving it or not) and realizing all the stories I haven't told about Australia yet. What an interesting country!! First off, I used to say Australia was like Canada but with an accent (I would say this before actually being in the country). Silly me. Yes, it is comparable but you can't really compare apples to oranges (well, you can, but that is just dumb). So, let me start with the city of Melbourne....my future home. Not ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Perth April 3rd 2013

Well hello from down under! Never imagined I would be living and working in Australia, but guess who is a working woman again? Yup, me... and now I remember very clearly why I quit working for other people. Or quit working in the restaurant industry maybe. Or to really break it down, working in a restaurant where people don't tip. Canada definitely has one up on Aus for service! It is basically non-existant here. So, before I get on a rant about the lack of service in this country, I'll rewind a bit because I have been off the radar for far too long! I suppose I avoided blogging more about my experience in Cambodia because I only had a week, and the last few days there were so heavy. I left Siem Reap, which is ... read more

Good bye India! It has been an incredible 3 months, but it's time for a change. It was such a challenge being in India that long, but the harder the struggle, the sweeter the victory. I am still processing it, but as of right now, I could wait a few years before going back, and if I do, it wont be alone. Oh but on a side note, my last day in India I went bungie jumping!!! Wow! It was 275 ft over the ganges river up in Rishikesh which is at the base of the Himalayas. I've learned that the scary things in life is basically a mental struggle. So I just didn't think about it and did a perfect jump :) Minus the fact I had just eaten lunch and the curry was launched ... read more

Imagine being on the most tranquil, remote island where you wake up naturally, no alarms, no Internet or cell service, stroll over to a little cafe and order breakfast. The Indian man only wearing a lungi (a cloth/skirt wrapped around his waist), walks over to coconut & mango trees and 20 minutes later brings you a plate of fresh fruit. All you hear is the ocean and the most difficult decision to make that day is which beach to bike to and what type of fish to order for dinner. Okay, so now picture having that zen mentality and then arriving in the most intense, wild, assault on your senses type of city in the world...this has been my week! I had a head ache for 2 days, although I can't complain because going to the ... read more
