Well, I guess it is over a week since my last post. In that time, we have gone from Kollum to Allepy by ferry through the back waters. The ride took 8 hrs but took us through some very magnificent scenery, and a view of the day to day life of people that live along the backwaters. They do all their daily chores in the river, everything from bathing to washing clothes and dishes. Very interesting. The ferry stopped part way for a "coffee break" where we were able to sample some different snack foods. We had deep fried bananas and a few other things sweet things that I couldn't identify, but they tasted good! We arrived in Allepy late in the evening and went straight to our hotel. This was the first place where we ... read more

From Kuala Lumpur I flew Air Asia to Kochi, located the southern state of Kerala in India. “Incredible India”, as its tourism slogan says, has been very high on the list of countries I wanted to visit and I finally made it! My first impressions were: “Crazy traffic, a different world, very interesting and cheap”!!! India is known to the outside world as a dirty country with low hygiene standards, which in one way is true but you just have to be a bit careful where you eat. There are plenty of small, simple restaurants and if a restaurant is usually busy, that means it’s good and safe to eat at. Meals are very cheap and you could budget around US$ 7 per day for food, but you could get away with even less than that. ... read more

HE SAID... We were leaving Kerala Backwaters and heading north to Kochi. It rained heavily during the night, so our sleep was broken, but we woke around 6am feeling reasonably refreshed. We showered, prepared our packs and sat down to idlis(steamed cakes made from fermented rice and lentil batter), coconut curry and hot tea for breakfast at 8am. I had a slight scare with the netbook, which had lost all mouse and keyboard functionality. No matter how many times I re-booted, it remained unresponsive. I hadn’t backed up, so I felt pretty dejected. I’d resigned myself to the fact that I’d have to buy a new laptop in Delhi, and that I’d lost all the travel notes I’d typed over the past two weeks. It was an awful realisation. We left our home stay in Karumady ... read more

HE SAID... We touched down in Kochi at 10pm and were immediately greeted by the warm embrace of a balmy Indian evening. We breezed through customs and caught a taxi to Saj Homestay in Fort Kochi. It was a one hour drive, and we finally arrived at 11.45pm. The place was fantastic! We dropped our packs, showered and then crawled into bed at 12.30pm (or 6am Hobart time). We’d been travelling for 26 hours. The call to prayer woke me at 5.30am. The bustle outside our first floor window was slowly building and a bird with a monotonous call had started his day. I stayed in bed until 6am and then slowly began to organise my pack where I’d dropped it the night before. I felt incredibly rested. We headed down to breakfast at 8.30am. A ... read more

Arriving in Cochin I wasn't going to blog, but after so many requests, I think I should! It was an exciting, although arduous journey, but thanks to Claire and Dimitri, it was a better than it might have been. I landed at 3.30am. It then took about 2 hours to go though immigration, collect my baggage, and then finally get a taxi to Fort Kotchi. I really felt sorry for the driver. It took him such a long time to find Good Karma Inn. He actually knocked the family up out of bed! They were al very helpful, and I was in bed by 7.30ish. I slept until about 10am. I assembled our India Xmas tree before I went up on the roof top where I found a lady having a cafetière coffee, which she kindly ... read more

After a verycivilised flight to Cochin (easyjet and Ryanair could take note!) we went straight to the very old shul. It's very beautiful and is in the middle of Jew Town which used to be full of Jews but now there are only 7 jews left. There's a cemetery too and a few old mezuzahs left on houses. Then a swim in our pool (lovely!) and a walk along the river fast-flowing and full of water lilies exiting into the Arabian Sea. Lots of stalls selling their wares and most unusually a row of Chinese fishing nets. We watched the catch being hauled in. Unchanged for hundreds of years. Looking forward to 3 days in the backwaters......... read more

Panorama view of Kochi harbor. The original port into India for European merchants and explorers. Portuguese and other European nation left behind their influences thru architectures and Christianity. Kochi has many mosques and churches. A lot of great places to get chicken and beef Biryanies. My favorite is this local place in Fort Kochi called "Hotel New Star." Its typical for restaurants to be called "Hotel." The landscape from Banglore to Kochi was lush and green. It felt as if I was in the middle of a jungle. The weather was also cooler than Northern India and the people seemed more relaxed. I worked up the courage and rented a vespa to explore the city. ... read more

In the forests ranges of Malayattoor in Kerala found Bharanikuzhi waterfalls; it’s seasonal in nature. The awesome beauty wins hearts of travelers at very first glance. If you love nature and traveling come to watch the rendezvous of Bharanikuzhi waterfalls. I visited this place 3 or 4 times in past and all time I promise myself to revisit again. Here are my experiences sure nature lovers will enjoy reading. The beauty of Kerala lies in the green areas spread across length and breadth of the state. Incidentally, this place is not highlighted in the state’s tourist map yet. If those places started founding place in a tourist’s map, perhaps the real luster will be lost because of excessive human encroachment. We wake up this morning and pack up all our stuff. No matter what happens we are going to move from the hotel. $400+ a night is just too much. But, we are keeping our fingers crossed. We head out towards breakfast but stop at the SpiceJet office. I was sure nothing could be done to get on that flight but Shelly wanted to try anyway. We showed them we had a ticket for yesterday’s flight and had tried to cancel it online. They said we had succeeded and that the credit card had been credited. They said today’s flight was full though. But Shelly to the rescue. “isn’t there anything? Can’t we go standby?” Then they finally said if anything did become available they said “it will cost too much”. Shelly asks “How much?”. Oh ... read more

MUMBAI – Sunday 2nd Feb / Monday 3rdFeb 2014 Marvellous, manic, Mumbai!! Lots of administration before we could even get off the ship! (Docked at No 18 Indira Dock) We got up at 5.30am (walked a mile around the deck!!) before queuing with all the other mad people at 6.00am, waiting for the immigration officers to come on board and have a face to face interview – ie stamp our yellow card!!! Breakfast and then queued again for ‘ship clearance’ and eventually disembarked at 8.15am where our Private Tour of Mumbai (Services International, Delhi) driver should have been waiting!! To be fair, they were only 5mins late and we were duly driven and escorted to The Gateway of India of India to buy our tickets for the first boat of the day to Elephanta Island at ... read more
