2Madurai and Kerala Sunday (26th Feb) morning we set off early to Madurai. It's a four hour drive northwards, but on a good straight dual carriageway. Slower traffic (lorries and farm carts) often drive in the outside lane, and other traffic, with a horn blast, overtakes on the inside lane. We leave the administrative district of Tirunelveli, and pass through Thuthukudi, Virudunagar, into Madurai and the main town Madurai, to the Hotel Supreme. Toni and I have time to pop in to Chennai Silks, a wonderful store of saris, of every hue and colour. I'm on a mission to buy a salwar kameez that I will wear as a tunic in the UK. So often I buy ethnic clothing in a country and never wear it at home. The one I buy I will sew up ... read more

On our second day in Fort Kochi we had a few logistics to organise. With only a week left and no beach time so far we decided to head to northern Kerala. I had read that the beaches here were as good as any of the ones further south but considerably less developed with only a few major resorts set up on them. We had to be back in Chennai to meet up with our return flight so after a bit digging around managed to find an airport in Mangalore, a city at the south end of the state north of Kerala, Karnataka, that had daily flights to Chennai. Got a ticket on Jet Asia, a subsidiary of Ethihad airlines, which got us back to Chennai 12 hours before our onward connection, I hope they don't ... read more

With a train booked for late at night we had another day on Fort Kochi. It's a great place to wander around and decided we would go to another suburb called Mattancherry. There is the old Royal Palace here. It tells an interesting story of how a Monachy over many centuries gets replaced and absorbed into a society. The Palace is now a museum and stores many of the Royal artifacts. The descendants of the monachy are now lacking in title and living as 'normal' citizens. Very thought provoking given an impending change of monarch in the Windsor family. We spent a while wandering around the many antique shops in the area. We found a massive shop/warehouse where you could probably put together a whole house made up of old doors, portals, statues, furniture etc. It ... read more

We left the serenity and tranquility of the pineapple fields at Soans Farm to wander the quaint streets of Kochi. To get to Kochi, we had to drive a little more than an hour to Mangalore to catch the train. We rode the train for 8 hours traveling south down the western coast of India. It is probably more accurate to say we "survived" the 8 hour train ride. It is not for the faint of heart or for anyone seeking modern comforts like space, restrooms, food or water! Once we arrived at our hotel in Fort Kochin, The Old Harbour Hotel, we realized the journey was worth the hassle. The Fort Kochin area is on an island thick with pedestrian friendly streets and open harbor views. We found great shopping and fantastic eating. Our hotel ... read more

As you may have noticed, Kyle joined us in India after we had been here a little while. It is not because we forgot him at home like an international version of Home Alone. Kyle arriving late was all part of the plan. One reason Kyle was late is because it is hard to pull him away from practicing law, but another reason is that he had an important date in New York City. Kyle and his dad ran in the New York City Marathon! This was one of those Bucket List items I guess I will never understand. People who run marathons pay someone a lot of money so they can run on streets that are normally free for running. They wake up really early to run a really long time. And all they have ... read more

I'm sitting in a Muslim owned restaurant in Fort Kochi, cooled by a breeze from the Indian Ocean even though the air is still sticky and humid. Something about tropical weather and palm trees makes any place feel like a vacation. We arrived to Kochi in the Kerala state a few days ago and in 2 days we will be in Delhi up north. I had believed a quick jaunt in southern India would be a less jolting culture shock than jumping straight to the insanity of New Delhi. India is still the most foreign place I've been though. I'm finding myself wondering what the customs are and how can I act without being offensive. Can I show my shoulders? My knees? How do I eat my food? Who can I talk to? Am I being ... read more

This Road trip was from Cochin in Kerala to Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Cochin has a railway station , a domestic & international airport having good connectivity to different cities. It is a major city of Kerala and one of the important gateway to start you Kerala tour, as it is well connected to different cities of Kerala. We reached Cochin in the evening and stayed there overnight. This trip was in the Month of July (The rainy season), however the climate was pleasant with some drizzling. The schedule of coming day was a 12 Hours’ drive - 400 Kms with some pit-stops. It was 400 Kms as we had to cover different places, otherwise one can reach Madurai through the highway which is a drive of 6 - 7Hours. After a delicious breakfast at the ... read more

I have always wondered why Kerala - A small state located in the south-west part of India is often called as God's own country. In this era of commercialization and Globalization, the marketing people will make use of all the punchlines and taglines to lure the masses. So i thought the phrase God's own country is something used for tourism purpose since Kerala is one of most preferred vacation destinations - Not only in India but around the globe. But when my flight descend into the runway of Cochin International Airport - At that moment itself i realized that those people who give the name "God's own country" are not wrong at all.
