Do you know how many times I tried to start this blog, then deleted it? Too many. I can't explain it. Serious. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then my pictures will help me out in this blog. Egypt was nice and travelling with Anna was so perfect, but saying goodbye was one of the hardest things I've done. In this blog, I just did point forms as something has come to my mind, it's the only way I could do it. Some are just questions that go through my mind. India? Take a look at the photos and have a read. Here we go... India - A beautiful mess Fu€... read more

Autumn is coming, it must be time to pack our bags and head out. On Tuesday, September 11th we'll be on a plane to India. After a night in Delhi, we will fly north to the Himalayan province of Ladakh. Then, after a few days in the Leh area, we plan to drive west, over the high passes to Srinagar in Kashmir. In Srinagar we will stay on a houseboat on the lake before we head south to Amritsar and the Golden Temple. We'll then use local trains to get to Shimla, a colonial hill station, before we head back to Delhi. Many of you will know, we had plans to go on to Tibet. Well, the Chinese are not keen on letting foreign tourists in at the moment. This is probably due to unrest in ... read more

Na ... read more

I was really kicked about the bicycle trip. I was going to cycle from Khardung La, the world's highest motorable road (18380 ft) to Leh, a distance of 37 kms. I reached the cycling company and test rode my bicycle. Since there was still time, I thought of having some breakfast, while all the others test rode their bicycles. Once all of us (there were 3 people from Italy and 2 from Switzerland), were done, the guys tied all the bicycles to the roof of the cab and we were ready to go. We started our drive upto Khardung La. Since I had already crossed the Khardung La, on my trip to Nubra valley, I did not take much from the ride. After a couple of hours, I was there. I had a cup of black ... read more

I boarded a shared cab from Leh, that left for Pangong Lake at 6 in the morning. The lake is more like a land locked sea, shared by the countries of India and China; with the larger portion falling in China. It was a five hour ride, which started getting beautiful once we crossed Karu and started gaining height. This time, unlike the other tourists in the cab, I wasn't bothered about photographing the view. Since I had already been in Ladakh for quite a few days and had taken a lot of pictures; I just thought of enjoying the view. Of all the passes that one encounters in Ladakh, the ascent to Chang La (17586 ft) is said to be the steepest. The road for the last few kilometres was not in a good condition, ... read more

Leh is the largest village in Ladakh, and by village, I mean town. It is similar to anything one might find in the USA: it has banks and post offices, hospitals and taxis, all of the hustle and bustle that is completely unavoidable in India. What lies beyond Leh, even just 20 or 30 kilometers away where the roads end, is where Ladakh begins. The landscape is high mountain desert. The low points sit at about 11,000 feet, and passes generally reach 15-17,000 feet. Despite the lack of roads, electricity, and telephones, life exists; it flourishes. The people work all summer to prepare for the winter, and of course the animals do, too. The allegory of the the grasshopper and ant comes to mind. It is hard to imagine Ladakh in the winter. A man at ... read more

The previous day was exciting and eventful. We rode our bikes on the SriNagar Leh highway, crossed the Magnetic Hill, visited the Patthar Sahab Gurudwara (one constructed and maintained by the Army), the Sangam (where the Indus and Zanskar rivers meet); rode back to Leh and then took the Leh Manali highway and visited the Hemis monastery. Of course, earlier in the day we took the wrong turn and headed for a military camp; we were stopped at the entry gate itself and asked to return back. But when one is on a trip, where so much happens at the same time, one doesn't really get time to think about everything. We left around an hour before noon passing by small villages on the outskirts of Leh city. Children smiled and waved at us and we ... read more

Not being a person to choose comfort over adventure; taking the road to Leh was a decision that came naturally to me. I wanted to enjoy the scenary and since I was travelling alone; I took the bus. The bus left Manali at 11 in the morning. The ride was comforting in the beginning and the scene outside would have charmed anyone's eyes. But as we moved on, the road started to get narrower. There were several instances when I looked down from the window and saw a gorge several feet deep, just inches away from the bus. We got caught up in a traffic jam for a couple ... read more

We had only booked 4 nights in the guesthouse and so were supposed to be leaving Leh today but we loved it so much we decided we wanted more time here. We searched for the cheapest flight out of Leh - to save us a few days and an even more terrifying bus journey and then arranged another 4 nights staying with Yoda. We took the long walk through the town and up the many steps to a Buddhist monument called Shanti Stupa. We were still suffering from the altitude so again took our time. The stupa was built by Japanese monks in 1991 to promote world peace. Didn't really work, but it looks lovely, and again the views of Leh were incredible. In the evening we went to book a Tibetan cooking class and then ... read more

So we managed to reach the bus in the dark at 4am in Kargil and headed through the mountains again towards Leh. The road wasn't as bad as the first leg and we reached Leh, in Ladakh by 3pm that day. We jumped in a taxi to the guest house along with 3 Dutch boys from our bus. The outside of the guesthouse was lovely and Yoda was waiting for us in the garden. We didn't learn his real name but he spoke like Yoda from Star Wars and had the most amazing laugh. Our room was amazing, nice big bed, nice view, proper toilet and SKY TV! We were very tired but happy after a long, stressful journey. We decided to go for a walk, and although Leh looked lovely we soon turned back after ... read more
