I am wwriting this after the last two days have been spent in bed! It took around 25 hours to get eventually to Leh, 6 of which were spent sleeping on Delhi airport floor. After arriving in Leh on an incredibly small runway, the altitude did not affect me straight away, but over the last two days my body has struggled to acclimatize to the altitude. I have been sick and had a constant headache although this evening I am feeling slightly better. We have now finished our tow days of rest and are setting off for a three day rafting trip. I hope to be well enough for this as i feel I am slowly getting better. The hotel is nice considering, and facilties not too bad. I will update you all in three days ... read more

Probably the worst jouney I have ever done in my entire life. 36 hours with out any sleep and altitude sickness, but it wasn't all bad. 2am start, a jeep fit for 8 people, managed to squeeze 11 in for a 19 hour trip. We were pretty happy when we were put in the back when there were 4 in front where there was only enough for 3, but little did we know that they were gonna squeeze a fat Indian fella and another Indian man dressed as a woman, his sexuallity was given away by the fact he had an incredibly large moustach. Both were extremely smelly! Wonderful! It was very amusing cause these guys must have been incredibly tired and would nod off every now and again, but when they did they would loose ... read more

Car Rally: Raid de Himalaya 2005 (Oct 01 to 08, 2005) Participants: Shyam Khandelwal & Varun Choukhany Category: Reliability Trial Car: Hyundai Viva 1.60 ABS (Petrol) (Front Wheel Drive) Breakdowns: Nil, no punctures Driving 300 odd kilometers on Himalayan roads every day is not easy.. but its fun!! There are some stretches of road enroute to Leh that would put Delhi roads to shame and some roads that come straight from Mars. For more information on the rally, visit http://www.raid-de-himalaya.com On the whole RDH is worth doing once (or maybe more). This is an experience that will recharge your dead batteries, but at a cost. The rally ain't cheap, both in terms of money and time involved. The downside is that you can't act like a tourist and miss out lot of places that needed to ... read more

got up late. every one started looking around for zintac, asprin & fresh lime juice. this is the best breakfast after a night of heavy smirnoff & spicy food. we top up the car & leave srinagar (there is no fuel station for next 250 km). the next stop is sonamarg. sonamarg is a beautiful mountain resort. The picture has Mota with Sonamarg in the backdrop. I feel the car does not have enough pulling power. we hunt for a mechanic and find Mujeeb the only & all famous mechanic at Sonamarg. He fiddles with the clutch cable & says it is fine now. Our friend Gulam the shikara guy had told us to stock juices, dry fruit, choclates & snacks for the journey coz at times there is no village for a 100 km ... read more

LEH BY ROAD. The mountains of the North Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir have always facinated & enchanted me. Over the last three years I have been travelling to Srinagar very frequently on business. In June 2004 I was in Srinagar on business and invited four of my college time friends to come for a holiday. My friends were from the plains and were mesmerised by the natural beauty. We went to Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, Baramulla, Kupwara and many more beautiful places. It was then we decided to go to Leh, Ladakh for a vacation the next year. I had been to Leh once by Air but after seeing the moonscape thought driving to leh will be more excieting. JAMMU TO SRINAGAR. 25th July 2005. We leave Jammu for Leh in our car. Leh is beautiful. It only got opened up to Tourism in 1974, and it has spoiled the place a ton, but there are still many friendly locals who are Tibetan Buddhist. www.isec.org.uk showed me a video (Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladahk) on Leh yesterday which was great. There is a book also which I highly recommend! I could do a lot worse than to come back here after my traveling and try and work as a volunteer. It is quite a coincidence, but they are based in Foxhole - where Dartington College is. The temples, gompas, chortens, and mosques are very nice indeed. Tomorrow I am hoping to Mountain bike to Tikse - which is called "Little Lhasa" by the locals because it has a temple that makes it look very much like the capital of ... read more
