Day 4 – 29.07.2010: The day started with a hit on snooze button of the alarm clock at 0500 hrs. Warmness of the bed-room inside Log-hut and last day’s tiredness were the reasons why nobody was willing to come out from quilt. But the excitement to travel the less travelled road was much stronger than the comforts. Within an hour, we all were ready for a journey of 473 kms via some of world’s highest motorable mountain passes. Our first destination was Rohtang Pass which was 52 kms from Manali on Manali-Leh highway at an altitude of 3978 mts. Prior to reaching Rohtang Pass we took our trainer and skiing kit from Manali. Rohtang is a famous tourist destination which remains open from April/May to October/November that too depends on weather conditions. For rest of the ... read more

Got up at 4:30am packed everything and left hotel Thongsal at 7am. Filled petrol and on the way visited Shey Palace and Thiksey monestry and reached Karu by 8:30am. Had breakfast the usual Alloo parantha with rajma curry and left at about 9:00am. We passed Upshi, Tanglang la the second highest pass @ 17,582 feet. The roads were very slippery full of slush and gravel. We encountered one land slide and one snow slide on the way. Luckily both the times bulldozers immediately cleared the paths and we just had to wait for about 10-15 mins each time. At the spot where the snow slide was there except Ravish’s bike all the other bikes got stuck and trying to get the bikes out was a very tough and we were breathless. Thankfully one of the cab ... read more

Got up at about 6 am and left to Khardung La. Ravish and JP decided to stay back and hence I went with Brian and Payal in the same xylo driven by Ali. We had breakfast before we left and reached Kardung La the highest motorable road in the world at about @ 18380 feet by 8 am. There me and Brian trekked to the highest point of pass and took some awesome photographs. Then had maggi and ladhaki chai at the cafeteria there and then started by about 10am and returned to leh by about 11:15am. Then had lunch at Thongsal and did most of the packing. At 4pm went and got my Bike’s crash guard fixed which had bent a little when I had a fall on the way to leh. Then went to ... read more

Got up at 5 am had tea and left to Pangong Lake by cab. Ali was the driver and xylo was the car. Left at 6am and then on the way had breakfast at Karu and reached the Lake at 11am. Then went for a walk on the banks of the lake. This is the biggest salt water lake in Asia which is 7 kms wide and 130 kms long. One third of this lake is in india and the rest lies in China. Took lot of pictures of the lake which throws out various shades of blue. This is where the last scene of the 3 idiots was shot. Then had lunch there and left at about 1:30pm and reached Leh by about 6pm. Then went out shopping with Brian and Payal and bought couple ... read more

We had the luxury or sleeping till 7am for the first time since we started this trip on the 26th of may 10 days ago. Got up and arranged for applying for the inline permits and then had breakfast and went to the main bazzar and went to a mechanic to get the JPs bike checked just opposite the SN memorial Hospital. The mechanic there did a few things and told us that was all he could do and at high altitudes the bikes give some small issues like this and it is not a concern. Then went and had lunch at German bakery and came back to the hotel by 4pm. Since the permit had not come cancelled the Khardung la program and then fixed up taxi for Pangong lake and then took a nap ... read more

Got up at 4:00am by now getting up at 4 has become a habbit and all of us are getting up 5-10mns before our alarms go off. Got ready and packed all the bags and put them on our bikes and this time to prevent dust we covered them with plastic garbage bags. We left our hotel “Hotel d’Zojila, Kargil” at 6:30am. We fueled up all the bikes just outside Kargil. Since we had got a message from prithvi that the roads between Kargil and Leh was good we were pretty excited. But to our surprise the roads were very bad as bad as the roads that we had encountered yesterday. As a matter of fact 75% of the entire stretch the roads were non existent. We reached Mulbek which is just about 35 kms from ... read more

I had refused to go to Leh as it was an arid desert in a remote corner when there were so many beautiful places to see in India. Incidentally, my manager cancelled my nomination for a training in Hyderabad which I so wanted to attend. Meanwhile, my friend was going to Leh and she invited me.I thought this trip would cheer me up. My leave was also easily sanctioned. Even my sister recommended this place. I decided it was destiny and happily tagged along. I reached Delhi and spent the night with my 2 little nephews aged 3 and 6, trying to gun me down and I pleaded with them to save me! Save me please! The next morning, I was at the Delhi airport with the 20 odd women from 19 to 45 years young! ... read more

On our third day in Ladakh it was finally time for our first longer excursion. We were still quite groggy in the morning after yet another exhausting night; it seemed we were not yet fully recovered from the change of altitude. The thought of leaving the warm bed, now a fortress of blankets and jackets layered on top of each other like the Earth's geological strata, and setting foot on what must surely be ice cold tiles in the bathroom felt just as alien and uninviting as trying to walk on the moon without an encounter suit. Then there was the promise of hot water nagging in the back of my head, I just knew I would be in for disappointment on that front. But surely the hotel manager had reassured us that yes hot water ... read more

(Continued from previous blog entry) - The journey back from Hemis saw us arrive at Thiksey Goemba in virtually no time. Still, the mind plays tricks on you; the distance often seems shorter than it really is. Gazing toward the destination it felt like all the twists and turns in the road kept creeping out of nowhere to try to disorient and delay our journey for little good reason. The large temple complex at Thiksey sits high atop a narrow hill around which the highway snakes itself. Though much smaller, it has the typical iconic look of the Potala in Lhasa, of which it appears to be a not so distant cousin. A village lies spread out around the higway, typically with people and animals bumbling about on the curb. White stupas in various degrees of ... read more
