Today a little techie stuff. We're using this great solar panel for charging our camera batteries, light torches, mobile phone of the horseman, etc... My solar panel charges a box with special batteries, and I can use it to charge anything with USB, 12V and even 220V! This piece of equipment worked perfectly for the whole trip, unlike my hard disks... In Ladakh there is a lot of sun. So, a lot of households, even in small remote villages, have a solar panel too. They use them to have a bit of light in the evening. We also came across several Solar Power Plants, where there is a battery of solar panels to power the village at night. For the rest today was a very small day. After about an hour of walking our horsemen wanted ... read more

F*ck, F*ck, F*ck, Everything was so smooth until now. So, we were supposed to start at 9 this morning but at 10:30 we were still waiting to start. Shashi the younger horseman, our "cook", acts a bit strange. We don't understand why, until they start to load the mules. In fact he has made a deal with 2 other tourists. He is taking them to come along with us. Well, we're not so happy about that, because we are completely "timing" free, we don't have a plane to catch and we're completely self sufficient, we have tent, food and cooking gear. For those two guys, it's another story, the only want to stay where there are lodges and where they can eat as they have no food with them, and they have exactly 10 days to ... read more

We're in Padum, the capital of Zanskar. A long time ago, it must have been a nice place. But the old town has been abandoned and it is almost destroyed. For the rest it is a stuffy scruffy town. A few shops, but not so many vegetables stalls. We have an "appointment" with a horseman that we had met in Lamayuru when we started. Yesterday, there was no sign of him, and for that matter no sign of any horseman at all. :-( But today we are more lucky, around 11 am, we saw some horses and, yes, the old man was there. He was accompanied by a younger horseman who proposes to cook for us. The deal is made, and although they have 6 horses/mules, they agree to go come with us. It will be ... read more

2 boring days of walking in the desolate Zanskar valley towards Padum. We're slowly coming into contact with "civilization". We're about halfway of our trek now. After the Chorten's sprinkled valley, we hit the village of Karcha with one of the most impressive gompa's we have seen. I mean not so much architecturally but the energy was out of this world! The day after we went to Padum the capital of Zanskar. The first cars and trucks again. Here we'll have to say goodby to Stantzin, he's going back to his home town. And he was lucky enough to find a truck to bring him halfway. But we had to "manually" load the donkeys onto the truck. We'll have to start to look for horses or donkeys again, but first a rest day...... read more

Hey Everybody, I am a bit behind with this blog. So today you'll get 3 days of trek in one go. From Day 8 til Day 10. Day 8. Hanumala Base 4000m to Zingshen 3400 but over Hanuma La at 4710m! in 7,5 hours. This is our last day in Ladakh. Zingshen is the first place in Zanskar. It was a though climb to the pass and the desent was in a beautifull stoney gorge. On one of the pictures you'll see we came across a huge Ice block. Almost the end of the summer and it still didn't melt. And the just before Zingshen we saw this unbeleivable ravine! Day 9 Zingshen 3400m to Hanumil 3410m over Parpi La 3900m, 5 Hours (oh a short day!) Today we saw the Zanskar River for the first ... read more

Today we're leaving Lingshed to go to Hanumala Base camp (4000m). It's a very short day, we only walked 3,5 Hours and only gained 300m in altitude. We did this so that tomorrow would not be too long, it's going to be a difficult day anyway. So after our short walk, we were staying in a valley next to a small brook and at the bottom of the mountain that we'll have to climb tomorrow. It was the hottest day of our whole trip! 45°C on the thermometer in the tent!!!! We took advantage of this hot day to wash ourselves in the river, the water was ice cold and not deep at all, but it was great to splash around in this bit of water. Ofcourse we went downstream from our camp as we're also ... read more

Finally a rest day. It is great to stop for a day after all the walking. There is a beautiful Gompa in Lingshed. We went to the Puja (prayers) and there was a very funny monk. Nadja took a great picture of him, but I do not have her pictures here, we'll have to wait for her to come back from India... We thought to go "downtown" for lunch... But in this tiny village there is of course no restaurant. But we were kindly invited into a private house and were offered a lunch. When we asked to pay, we were told the price was up to us. That's really the spirit of Ladakh, compared to our trip in the other parts of India, people here are much less after your money, it's very relaxed. People ... read more

This was the hardest day of the whole trek. We slept just below the highest pass of of this part of the trek, so we would have only 300m to walk to the pass. But then after that there were another 2 big passes. So today we ended up walking for almost 10 hours and went up and down and up and down and up again and down again!!!! Start Senge La Base camp 4700m Senge La 4960m Kiupa La 4450m Murgum La 4370m to end up in Lingshed with its beautiful gompa at 3900m It really was the toughest day but the views were magnificent. At the first pass we were greeted by a monk who gave us a special fabric necklace which we wore from then on. Stantzin, who is a great horseman and ... read more

First, the last: Yes, sorry guys but this is the last video from our trip. Today I really realized that I couldn't rely on my hard disks, so I decided not to film anymore. I'll only take pictures and a couple of time-lapses. I am sad, as I was starting to enjoy the filming, but then I am here to trek and enjoy myself, I won't let any technical problem affect the freedom, peace and fun we have here! Then today was our FIRST real pass of our trek: Sirsir La, 4805 m. "La" means pass in Ladakhi. We started in Hanupata 3900m to end in Photoksar at 4210m over this high pass, all this in just 7 hours! It was hard but for me it was not too hard, just short breathed. Like you'll see ... read more
