The executive management team for the CPA Global office in India headed off to Shimla this weekend to align ourselves around our common purpose. When you have goals as big as CPA Global you need to be in the highest state of trust and communication. Fortunately, our country head in India, Bhaskar Bagchi, not only understands this but he takes his team out on corporate team building exercises to assure this. For this team building exercise, Paul Mathew of the "Corporate Theatre" facilitated the experience. Paul teaches successful team behaviors through experiential learning. It was a brilliant and powerful experience and great fun was had by all. For example, in one two hour session, we had to write a play, rehearse it, create a set, and perform the play, all in less than 90 minutes. When ... read more

As we were not expecting to like Shimla we were pleasantly surprised to find we did! It was a large city, another hill town close to Delhi, and it was spread 3 kilometers over the ridge line of three hills. The traffic was very busy, still holiday season, but our hotel was very close to the main bazaar area so we had no need to battle the traffic once we were settled. The company that we had booked the jeep tour through for our trip to the Kinnaur and Spiti valleys was based in Shimla and they had prebooked the hotel for us. Our first stop was to there office which was in the main bazaar. There are three bazaar (shopping) areas all joined by walking malls which wind their way up to the main bazaar ... read more

After 4 days in New Delhi of which one spend mostly in Agra we traveled on to Shimla. Looking forward towards the scenic trip on a toy train through the mountains, it ended as a bit of a hellish ride for myself. What caused it all was probably the meal we received on our train ride from Agra back to Delhi the day before. The result was that my stomach disagreed with everything I tried to put into it the day after. Couple this with a 5, 5 hour long economy train ride from Delhi to Kalka and you know I wasn't very happy during that trip. To put it into perspective. In the Netherlands there are usually signs on busses and trains which indicate the capacity of that particularly vehicle. Now take the capacity of ... read more

After doing lots of debate and discussion, we decided to go to Shimla in March 2009. Nainital, Mussoorie, Manali were on our charts but finally Shimla succeeded. Shimala was previously called ‘Simla’, even I was calling it Simla. The name ‘Shimla’ came in picture after coming to Delhi. So, we, myself & my husband left Delhi at 6:30 am. I got to know from some websites that Delhi-Shimla road distance is 350 km. So we decided to travel by car. We started our journey early in the morning to get rid of traffic. To get out from Delhi’s hustle-bustle is always a big problem. But we did not face it as it was a beautiful early morning. If one starts late in a day, he may be trapped in a traffic jam near Azadpur crossing, and ... read more

Hello everyone, Shimla is very cold at this time of year but has stunning views and a lot of history surrounding the city. During the time of British rule in India, Shimla was the summer capital. On the plains around Delhi it gets very, very hot during the summer months, so during this time the Viceroy and his staff would retreat to the hills where it was cooler. It wasn't just the Summer capital of India, but of the whole of the British Empire at the time. At one point one fifth of the globe was controlled from Shimla. Lots of the building here look very english, in fact it looks a little bit like Winchester! I visited the Viceregal Lodge where the British in charge lived and governed. It is a beautiful building and again ... read more

Arrived safe and well in Shimla. It was the summer capital during the time of the Raj. Today we are going to see the Viceroy's old residence where the empire (approx one fith of the globe at the time) was ruled from during the summer months. It is also the place where the meetings were held finalising Independance and Partition in the forties. We caught the Himalayan Queen here, it is a 'toy' train that runs on tracks about 2 ft wide! Great journey with beautiful scenery the whole way. It is a beautiful place and we can both see why it is so popular with tourists. Again we have been fortunate to descend on a Lavazza coffee house but we have decided to curb our love of coffee and try to experience life without our ... read more

Mit den Worten "Make it fast, our train is leaving in 10 minutes" springen wir also ... read more

Hello again! Ok so we've got a little bit more time now to fill you in on what we've done since Delhi! The Smyle Inn Hotel was great and let us keep the room for the rest of the day because our train wasn't until 9:40pm and check out time was noon. We went for a walk in the afternoon around our hotel area called Paharganj. Saw some amazing markets, got harrassed constantly for rickshaws and went down some back alleys. This was a slight mistake as we soon got a little lost and there were 4 rabid dogs fighting down one of the alleys we needed to go down! Managed to make a little detour and some of the locals were helpful in finding our way back. It was so hot in Delhi we could ... read more

Hello! We only have 15mins to write this quick blog but will probably come back tomorrow and finish it off because the last couple of days have been mental! Anyway, we're finally out of the heat of Delhi and we are now in the gorgeous Himalayan town of Shimla. It is amazing. The views are stunning and the temperature is cool, in fact, very cold at night. We even have hot showers here! The Hotel Dalziel is very nice. We have a great room with awesome views but the 'food' they sell is dire. The 'toast with butter and jam' consisted of mouldy bread jam sandwiches. The 'vegetable noodles' were so hot I nearly had shock! Anyways, you may be wondering about the title of this blog. We were waiting for our train and Old Delhi ... read more
