There are things which you lust for from a long time and plan meticulously and then there are those which just happen by chance. My trek to Buran Ghati was due to the latter reason. Ankur, Bhavesh, Rahul and I had booked for KGL trek in July and decided that we ought to do one in May too since our vacations would refresh in July anyway. So we booked Rupin pass initially after seeing the glowing reviews from a number of trekkers. But then all of a sudden a lot more people were interested in joining us and since there were no more slots for the Rupin pass batch, we decided to shift our trek to Buran Ghati which seemed good. My first thoughts were that Indiahikes were just trying to publicize it to lure folks ... read more

Once on the express train from Delhi to Kalpa there was at last a chance to relax. The seats were comfortable and the train had really effective air-conditioning. The air temperature in Delhi was about 35 degrees with high humidity so cool air was wonderful. Almost as soon as we sat down we were served chai, Indian tea. Very hot and refreshing. Soon after, food was served, delicious little starter followed by tasty curry and bread and strawberry jam backed up by a piece of very sweet coconut cake. Off to a good start on our trip. More tea then came, a Thermos of hot water, tea bag and cup. Perfect! A very handsome and beautifully turned out Sikh conductor came to collect the tickets and then there was chance to chat and catch a few ... read more

Its what I expected....plus 1000%! It all began with Air Asia's brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner gliding into Delhi Int'l carrying a 'happy bean'. Great food, unlimited (alcoholic) drinks, Hollywood and X Box's best, and personal service airliners offered 40 years ago. Then...you land! Airport...? Easy! No queueing for tourists, just the odd security question "Who is your Prime Minister by the way?". Then you are out. The ATM flatly refused me, but after automated texts from the bank I am holding 1,000's of rupees worth very little. Despite Colin's clear instructions not to surrender to the porters I gave in after a 40 yard 'simul-dash' with them and my luggage trolley. When I embarrisingly explain I have NO small change, he tells me sterling is fine and I say goodbye to Gbp1. The safest form ... read more

When travelling as we are it often the journey to a place or through an area that makes the experience and not the destination. Our experiences in the Northern State of Himachal Pradesh have emphasised this. We entered the state from Kulka in the Punjab on the famous narrow gauge train opened in 1909 to supply the summer Raj capital of Shimla. To get to Kulka from Chandigarh we had taken two local buses which were as bumpy and noisy and less crowded that the ones we remembered 30 years ago. The 'toy train' to Shimla must be one of the great train rides in the world. It takes 5 hours to crawl through over 100 tunnels and many switch back bends to climb from the plains to Shimla station at over 2000m. For most of ... read more

I did not know that cows could climb stairs. As a youngster I think I saw an episode of Mr. Ed where he used an elevator and those horses in 'The Long Riders' galloped through a general store making their getaway but I never saw a cow climbing stairs until yesterday. We are in Shimla, India. An old British hill station town north of Delhi. We are tucked into northwest India an area bordered by Nepal, China, Afghanistan and Pakistan. We are at an altitude of about 9,000 feet. The days are temperate and the evenings refreshingly cool but walking up a hill here can make you feel like you're one lung short and there are nothing but hills here. Big beautiful green ones that run all the way to the Indian Himalaya. We cannot see ... read more

After a month of peace and quiet, of cafes and momos, of Buddhism and English tutoring, it was time to leave McLoed Ganj and re-enter the "real India." We hopped our first bus down to the bigger town of Daramshala from McLeod and began our epic journey. In the past 48 hours we have taken 5 buses, 4 trains and 2 auto rickshaws (like 3 wheeled scooters), all of which, disregarding the rickshaws, were local means of transportation and devoid of any westerners except for ourselves. We took a second bus from Daramshala to Kangra and caught a rickshaw to the train station. We were dropped off at a no-name town and told to go down the street even too small for our rickshaw to the station. Down the road, over a fairly sturdy pedestrian suspension ... read more

We Started from Shimla on 30/06/2012 (Saturday) on the route via Naldehra, Tattapani to Shikari Mata. We were five in a Private Vehicle (Manoj Mehta, Sandeep Bhardwaj, Avneet Sirckek, Suraj Chauhan & Bharat Shah). We started our tour from Shimla and stopped for a while at Tattapani and spent there around ½ an hour on the river side. After then we again started our tour and stayed in HPPWD Rest House at Chindi. We had a lot of fun there, had our dinner and spent more than half night while playing cards. In the next morning after having breakfast, we again started our tour to Shikari Mata by approaching to Sanarli. A cab was hired there at Sanarli as the road from that place (Sanarli) was not so good for low ground clearance vehicles, therefore, a ... read more

We'd spent yesterday amid the clamour and cacophony of Delhi's characterful monuments and charismatic markets (see ). At five o'clock this morning, a more different view could hardly be imagined. There was only the merest hint of daylight. There was a chill in the air. There were no buzzing tuk-tuks, no honking horns, not even a background hum of traffic. Apart from a dog barking somewhere in the distance, silence reigned. We were on our way out of chaotic Delhi. Despite the ungodly hour, one of the young men from our homestay kindly supervised arrival of our taxi and quickly installed our bags, some in its boot and the rest balanced precariously on its roof-rack. We sped through an almost deserted city, racing through red lights, crossing junctions without slowing down, not giving the handful of ... read more
