Got up early(ish) as planned and went into town to find breakfast. Found a nice looking place, one of the nicest looking places ive been, the staff were wearing uniform suits with bow ties and there were old ships wheels and paintings decorating the walls. The food was good, i went foreggs, chips and more mystery meat sausages. After breakfast i decided to explore another part of Shimla called MIddle Bazzar, a jumble of winding streets working their way down the hill and jam packed with shops and stalls selling just about everything. I took the oppertunity to buy a few bits and after a few hours i worked my way back to the hotel. Soon after i got in it started to pour with rain (it rains at least once a day here but rarely ... read more

Woak up this morning to the sound of drums and cheering outside my room. I got up and went to the balcony to see what was happening, i expected to see a religious celebration of some sort but found instead that there was a school playground next to my room and it looked like the whole school was out, packing the stands of a 5-a-side basketball game. I watched for a while before packing up my things and going to check out of the hotel. The man behind the desk didnt seem to happy that I was leaving but I paid up and left to find somewhere else to stay. I had seen in the guide that there was a popular backpacker hotel called Spars Lodge, about a mile outside the main area of Shimla town. ... read more

So we left you with a cockroach in the breakfast, I'm glad to report I didn't get ill after that and we're both feeling very healthy at the moment. We spent a few more days in McLeod ganj. Most days we did the conversation classes with the Tibetans refugees which involved an hour and a half or so of talking with Tibetans about their lives, culture and where they've come from. Not only was it very interesting for us (neither of us realised how bad the suppression of Tibetan culture is) but it helped them improve their English and gain in confidence. We left and had the worst night bus experience yet, it had absolutely no suspension, (we were literally being shaken off our seats) and we arrived in Manali at 3.30am. Fortunately, after an hour ... read more

Stunning Shimla Bit of History to Tiggle your Curiosity Previously known as Simla and also nicknamed the Queen of the Hills, it was the Brits Summer Time retreat in 1864 (when bathing suits were full garments). A nice Scottish guy called Charles built the first British summer house in 1822!! There are still a lot of houses that have not been touched since! Shimla is a mountain/hilly range.. with lots of trees and you can also see the Himalayas and snow capped mountains in the distance! It snows a lot in the winter! The Facts Where? North of India, the current Capital of the Himachal Pradesh region 2,200metres above sea level (that's almost 10 Eiffel towers! How to get there? Do it in style, get a short 4 hour First class train from New Delhi to ... read more

DAY 5 After a ‘quick’ breakfast of mouldy cornflakes and dry toast............. Took about an hour to get from Chandigarh to Kalka and as we were there in good time to catch the Himalayan Queen 12.10 train to Shimla, we decided to have a look around the busy town of Kalka. The town was buzzing with cars, bikes, buses, people and cows!! The shopkeepers shoo these Sacred Cows away from the shops as they try to eat their wares ie peanuts, popcorn, veggies etc and the cars and bikes just drive around them as the cows stroll about wherever they choose! Bought some freshly made popcorn from a street seller and back at the station discovered that the train was delayed an hour as they were waiting for the Shabti Express from Delhi and this train ... read more

DAY 6 14th January 2011 Looked out of the window and it was snowing and monkeys were climbing over hotel windows and running along the road! Had a good breakfast of cornflakes and toast and met Daneesh our tour guide! Shimla is an old hill station, encircled by seven hills, where the viceroys of the British Raj used to spend their summers so it seemed fitting that we visited the Viceregal Lodge on top of Observatory Hill. A very impressive building and we also had a short tour of the inside and were shown the room where Lord Mountbatten and the Rulers of Pakistan & india sat down in 1947 to discuss and sign Partition. Onward to the Jakhu Hill Temple on Jakhu Hill (2450m) where there is a legend about Hanuman resting there waiting for ... read more

Hi, this is a description of our trip to Himachal Pradesh, encompassing Shimla, Manali, Kasol. From Kalka to Shimla: We started the first leg of what was to be an eminently memorable & enjoyable trip, from Kalka. We reached Kalka from Delhi by the Delhi-Kalka mail, which is an excellent train, in terms of comfort as well as promptness. We reached Kalka quite early in the morning, and boarded the Shivalik Express. This was an unforgettable journey. The train went all the way through a narrow path amidst the mountain and the sight of all the natural, unscathed greenery is simply breath-taking. If you reside in a concrete jungle, and all of a sudden you come across nature in all her glorious beauty, I am sure you would be equally amazed. We were served tea & ... read more

Nice lass, we had a nice day out there. We went to Qutub Minar, Jama Masjid, The Red Fort, Lotus Temple(Baha'i house of worship) and the government buildings at the end of Rajpath. Nase bludenie Himachal Pradeshom sa pomaly blizi ku koncu. Po sialenej dvanast hodinovej ceste local busom po Hindustan - Tibet 'highway' (high to sice je, ale way urcite nie) sme dorazili do Shimly. Je to nasa posledna zastavka pred navratom do New Delhi a odletom domov. :-) V sucastnosti mesto ... read more

First day of riding. We catch an early train north to Chandigarh where we collect the bikes. Royal Enfield Bullet 500cc single motorcycles made to a British design of the early 1950s in India. We learn the "endearing" traits of this motorcycle including how to get it started. This point proved very important as we found how easily it stalled when holding the clutch in. Also learned that that I should not pack my hat in the support van as we stood in the Chandigarh railway station car park being instructed on our bikes for ages in the baking heat (high 30s centigrade) and I ended up with a sun-burned head. So we made our way to the hills to the North through numerous little lowland villages. Early on one of the guys, Phil, took a ... read more
