Stunning Shimla
Bit of History to Tiggle your Curiosity
Previously known as Simla and also nicknamed the Queen of the Hills, it was the Brits Summer Time retreat in 1864 (when bathing suits were full garments).
A nice Scottish guy called Charles built the first British summer house in 1822!! There are still a lot of houses that have not been touched since!
Shimla is a mountain/hilly range.. with lots of trees and you can also see the Himalayas and snow capped mountains in the distance! It snows a lot in the winter!
The Facts
Where? North of India, the current Capital of the Himachal Pradesh region 2,200metres above sea level (that's almost 10 Eiffel towers!
How to get there? Do it in style, get a short 4 hour First class train from New Delhi to Kalka (the seats even had their own TVs!!, very different from travelling 2nd class or less). Stay in a dirty cheap hostel in Kalka and get locked in by the owner. Be prepared to have to break out v.early in the morning to catch toy train. Get a 5.30am toy train to Shimla 6hours away. N.B: as you are still in
India expect a 4-5 hour delay and regret dragging ya ass out of bed at 5am in vain! Toy train is absolutely fantastic, views are fab and the track is petite and cute(not Toy sized just small).
Weather?? The British favored this place over all in India... so obviously it is cold and frequently rains! Is probably warm in the summer... and most defiantly snows in the winter, being part of/near the Himalayas and all.
Rules I can HaPPily report that there are still the following rules which apply in the state of Shimla with a few new ones as of October 2010: NO Spitting, NO Littering, NO Overtaking, NO Honking the horn in the town centre, NO Smoking in Public
Summary
Shimla was my second favourite place in India after Udaipur (because of the lake), it is probably the cleanest place we saw due to the presence of bins and a hefty fine if one litters. From Shimla we return to Delhi to fly to Bangkok. 😊
