There are many roads from Uttarakhand to Himachal... and we decided to take the most difficult of the lot to reach our 9th Mahindra Homestay, Krish Rauni at Matiana. We left Camp Corbett at Kaladhungi after lunch and thanks to a board I saw at the Ramnagar entrance to Corbett National Park we took a road that was on the southern fringe of the park (via kashipura, Afzalgarh, Nagina and Najibabad). We got fleeting glimpses of some birds and wildlife as we drove to Haridwar for the night. After finding that the rooms at Ginger were dirty we stayed at a very decent Hari Heritage. The next morning we continued on NH 72 to Dehradun, and beyond. In Dehradun we took a break to pick up some wildlife books at The English Book Depot on Rajpur ... read more

Bugged by the exasperating workload, we headed off to Shimla this weekend, to find solace, but only to bump into the whole of Delhi crowd blaring horns in its characteristic fashion. So we bid farewell to the chaotic place, flipping through a local guide book and zipping away on the twisted road, we reached the surprisingly isolated Narkanda (2700 mts) , 67 kms from Shimla, which proved to be an ultimate holiday destination. Also, along with Thanedar and Kotgarh, Narkanda forms the apple heartland of Himachal. Thank God for the relative bliss. The place was a welcome delight. After the wacky journey there was peace. The most prominent edifice of Narkanda is the Hatu temple. Hatu is famous for its ski slopes. At a commanding position of 3300 mts, it offers a spectacular view of the ... read more

Day 1: Our base camp was sec.15 Chandigarh. Since we had plans of leaving early in the morning we stayed overnight at Chetan's place. We started our journey at around 08:00 after gearing up our bikes and taking a light breakfast. It was a bit cold in the morning but not as chilly as we expected so our light jackets were sufficient. We were three of us (me, Chetan, Deepak) on two bikes (RE Bullet & Pulsar).Bullet was heavy 350cc bike so we decided to tie our all heavy luggage to it. The ride upto the mountains was nice but it got really beautiful after crossing parwanoo. We were enjoying our bike rides. We stopped at various places in between our ride to enjoy the scenic beauty but our major stop was a camping site just before Solan. It ... read more

After extensive research on internet and through friends, We decided on chail for our much needed vacation. It had been so long, since we've had taken a break. And we wanted some place quite, a small cottate with scenic view. The palace hotel, in chail offers what we wanted. So we booked a log hut for a day. We wanted to keep everything spontaneous, so we just booked a day. Our vacation started on 12th feb, when we caught flight to delhi from hyderabad. This was mine and sruti's first flight together. Earlier, we had travelled together by bus and all but never flight, for an hr we kept sleeping, as we both were very tired. Next one hour, we kept chattering. Poor soul seated next to us kept cursing i guess. Though, we hadn't booked ... read more

After a short night in Delhi following our late arrival on the plane, it was an early morning start to catch the train to Kalka and then drive to Shimla a lovely tourist town in the Indian Himalayas, which is the capital of the Himanchal Pradesh (State). The weather was very very foggy, so we detrained at Chandigarh and drove from there to Shimla - around 100km, but about a 4.5 - 5 hour trip by car. The road is very windy and keeps going higher and higher ands deeper and deeper into the mountains. On the way up, there were no large rivers like in Nepal, where we hugged the edges of river gorges, but it many ways it was as picturesque, if not more so - there were many more trees and hills covered ... read more

Some Zen master or another suggested it is better to travel than arrive, but he did not have the day I did. A day after reading about a horrible crash of an overcrowded bus in Kangra where I had just been, I found myself on a bus with 120 fellow sardines, the conductor always willing to stop for more. I stopped worrying about holding on, as there was no where my body could go. I did worry about my ribs being crushed, but like nuts in a jar, with the shaking of the bus coming down the bumpy mountain road, some settling of contents did occur, enough that I had some time to reflect on what might await me on arrival in Delhi. Dreams of that perfect cinnamon bun from the German Bakery, the hot shower ... read more

After the heat and hassle of Pushkar, arriving in Shimla was literally like taking a breath of fresh air. The elevation, at nearly 2,500 metres, meant the temperature was a good deal lower than in the plains below, and the lack of vehicles from the main part of town has left the air clean... coupled with hefty fines for littering which mean Shimla isn't plagued by rubbish like the rest of the country. Shimla's history as the summer capital during the reign of the British Empire is probably well known so I don't need to repeat it here. The town itself is actually quite big, with more than 150,000 residents, and it spreads across the surrounding peaks a bit like a plague... although the old colonial buildings along the Mall and the Ridge are quaint, most ... read more

Shimla is a town in the hill province of Himanchel Pradesh, towards the far north of India. It became a military hill station during the Guerka wars in the nineteenth century but subsequently became a popular destination for the British due to its fantastic views and high altitude of 2400 metres, giving respite from the extreme summer heat of Delhi. The place became so popular that the British used it as their summer capital between April and November and its impressive to think that the whole country was run remotely from this small hill retreat. Getting to Shimla can be a bit of a slog. First of all you have to take the main railway for five hours, heading north of Delhi to a small town called Kalka at the foot of the hills.
