Francais ci-dessous Today June 5th, I am in my country and my hometown remembering a friend (whose birthday is today) who loves those mountains so much. I wanted to include my last circuit so this blog of my wonderful journey will be complete. Happy birthday dear friend. Happy reading. April 19th It's 43C in Delhi today. Thank God I leave for the mountains today. This heat is unbearable. One want to sit indoors under the AC forever. A circuit I am so looking forward to, having heard about this region and some towns like Shimla and Manali by so many people, locals and toursits alike. Our first stop is Shimla. Wow I am pleaseatly surprised. Shimla does not look like any town or city I have visited so far in India. Nestled in the mountains ... read more

So this weekend was spent in an English seaside resort, or certainly a place that felt like one! With the time off we had thanks to the lama dances back at Tashijong we decided to spend a long weekend in Shimla, giving us the chance to celebrate Heather's birthday (provided her and hannah were let out of their draconian christian school) and for Bhaarat to visit some family... who have been calling him for quite some time about it! We met the 'new gappers' who had recently arrived in McCleoud on thursday - amusing to see people at the stage we were about 3/4 weeks ago, they seemed to be enjoying it though... living it up with regular trips to McClo's bar for evening drinks! - before catching a night bus to Shimla. Shimla sits ... read more

Opps, I accidentally deleted my last two entries. Had the Shimla one saved in my email though... Hello all! We are now arrived in Shimla. Sunday I took an exciting autorickshaw drive to Taru's aunt's (Sangita) house. Cows in the middle of the motorways (apparently they escape from their sheds and are everywhere), more shocking driving and far too many cars honking. Somehow made it alive and had a refreshing coffee and chat with Sangita and her daughter. Then Sangita took me on a sunglasses hunt, where we got delayed for a good hour by the opticien who wanted to demonstrate his knowledge of India, before going for food, then checking out a place Sangita wants me to stay. She thinks the place I was booked into is in too 'shady' an area, so I ... read more

Shimla was fantastically sunny during the day, but the minute the sun was out of action the temperature dropped to about -50. Whilst our room at Hotel Woodland offered us fantastic views of the mountains, after dark it felt a bit like we were camping because the room is so darn cold. There's something very unreasonable about shivering to sleep with a sunburnt face. Compared with the dust and smog of Delhi, it was nice to breath the fresh air and everyone was fantastically friendly. The whole town is perched precariously on the sides of mountains, and in the places where there are no houses, there are massive pine trees alongside plenty of monkeys. It was a bit out of the main tourist season, so we were a bit of an attraction, being asked to pose ... read more

Getting here was a test of patience and willpower due to the number of times we were given the wrong travel information and the journey which eventually lasted around 15 hours from room to room! We spent most of this on a local service bus from Ambala to Shimla with only a quick 20 min break in Chandigarh bus station to get breakfast and the sweetest coffee in the world. The views as we climbed up the mountain were amazing although we bearly saw them as we spent most of the time with our eyes shut trying not to see what was going on on the road. As with any mountain road it was narrow, twisty and had sheer drops at the side. This did not deter overtaking on corners and there were so many near ... read more

Woke up at 5.00 am after a pitiful 4 hours sleep. Caught a cycle rickshaw to the train station as were too tired to walk the distance w/bags. Got on the train and Chloe began to feel ill... She kept feeling as if she was going to throw up, then going to the toilet and not being able to, then feeling better, proclaiming recovery, before it returned in a more vicious wave than before. The sickness finally passed, and in an attempt to reassure a shaken Jesse, she jollily told him how great she felt. Little did she know that Jesse felt rather hellish himself! However, both of these passed with the arrival of our friend Bobby, at about ten o'clock! A very cheerful and camp young Indian student who succeeded in making the entire student ... read more

I had another 10 hours bus ride in front of me. I was getting a bit sick of them by now since I had 3 in the last few days already. I was planning to catch the 8AM bus but I underestimated the distance to the bus station. People had told me it was from one to three km from the hotel and I found out that they were all overoptimistic, it was more like double that and it was uphill all the time. I managed to make it by 7:59 while mumbling stuff like "It's like if they put Kathmandu's bus station on Everest Camp III, goddamn idiots". In the end, all was well and I even managed to secure a seat next to someone I hoped wouldn't vomit on me this time. Once again ... read more
