Well, I finished up the internship and Keif and I decided to head for Himachal Pradesh, another state in the Himalayas. We made it to Shimla, a famous hill station with relics of the British in the architecture and open walking malls. It is a really interesting area perched on top of the hills and Keif is happy because there are bizarre looking yaks that you can ride through the mall. After spending a day in Shimla we decided to rent a car and driver and head up the Indo-Tibetan highway into the Kinnaur Valley to see more of the Himalayas. We had read that the road in parts was a little scary, but it didn't sound terrible. It turns out the road is TERRIBLE. This was due to landslides, construction, and blasting, though none of ... read more

AS usual please excuse all errors inspelling and grammar...thnaks.....B :) The India I expected is the India I read about in books. I think I have come 30 years too late. We are sitting in Shimla in a hairdressers cum internet cafe. The people of Shimla must be part mountain goat because a flat street is almost impossible to find. The romantic image I had of Shimla, the Hill Station from days past has been flung to the wind and what is left is an overgrown collection of houses that look like so many martin bird houses stuck on to the side of the mountain ... and not just one ridge but repeated ridges as far as one can see. In the night many lights are all around as we look out our window. The ... read more

4km walk to the Viceregal lodge, stunning views. It was the former residence of the British viceroys and now it’s a university. Met several "interesting" people on the walk. An old man introduced himself, he couldn't speak much English so it was hard work but he was really friendly. He hugged and kissed my shoulders when I said goodbye. Talked to an old Indian couple on a bench. They run an Osho meditation retreat. Nice enough people but Osho has a bad reputation. The man said "everyman searches for the peaceful experience they had in the womb". Took a tour around the lodge, Gandhi and other important politician discussed Indian independence from the British in the building. Its a stunning building, washed with history. Walked around the Botanical gardens, very pretty. ... read more

Christ, worst journey ever - 10 hours in a shit mobile. It was so bumpy, close to sickness and was holding my bladder for 4 hours. Arrived in Shimla at 10.00pm, took a taxi to Hotel Dreamland. Not bad, views will be amazing in the daylight. Very cold though. ... read more

Many have heard of, and many praise Shimla for its British heritage. It was an old hill station when the British were in residence. To be honest, we weren't that impressed. If we'd visited it first then yes, we would have liked it. But after visiting the beauties of Leh and McLeod it didn't match up. It has an old British style Christian church, and oddities like a small 40's style 'Gaiety' theatre (which we would have loved to see used) but we had more issues of misunderstandings with language and dodgy food there than any where else. It has its charms and we do have fond memories of some aspects of it but - lets move on. We left Shimla 9 days after arriving (yes, it's a long time when we weren't keen but Gill ... read more

This belated journal is about Simla, the capital city of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, nestled among lovely hills covered with firs and deodars. It is in nothern India, and heavy snowfall occurs in the months of February-March. I went there for a week, in December 2003, in the Christmas week. Simla is abounding with crowds around this time (also in the months of April to June). I love hill-stations when they are at their coldest, and mistakenly thinking that there certainly would be snowfall around Christmas time in Simla, I had planned to go there at that time( anyway, I was not free to go to there in Feb ,being a student). The Train Ride First things being first, how I reached there . I took the famous hill-train from Kalka to Simla, and the ... read more

Well, me and my trusty companion the Small Bear are back in Shimla after a week or so wanderingin Kinnaur. We visited the Sangla valley, which was beautiful and very peaceful. Celebrated my 30th birthday there in fact. The snow is starting to extend down the mountains now and the temperature is dropping, so we headed back to Shimla taking in the village of Sarahan for a couple of days on the way. This too was a great place. The mountain vistas in Kinnaur are defintely some of the most majestic I've ever seen. We stayed in the guesthouse of the Bimakali temple, which was nice and also cheap (150 rupees for a double room). The temple itself has a mixture of Buddhist and Hindu icons, but is mainlyfor the veneration of Kali. Apparently human sacrifices were performed at ... read more

It was my first morning in Shimla. I woke up with the sound of tap dance being performed by a family of monkeys on the tin roof of my hotel room. When I got morning sunrays into my room in Delhi, I always pulled the curtains because I can never sleep with so much light. But here it was different. Who wanted to sleep when a beautiful morning was prodding me to get out of my bed? So, first rays of winter morning sun acted as a catalyst to fire me up. After a hot shower I ordered breakfast. Sipping hot tea with morning newspapers is one of my favorite activities. After reading the news headlines I was ready for the day ahead. My programme for the day included a visit to the resort of Kufri, ... read more

Shimla has been called the Honeymooner’s Paradise in north India and is the biggest hill station in India. I had never been to Shimla until last year when I finally decided to visit the summer capital of British India. I took Kalka Mail train from Delhi to Kalka. After an overnight journey I reached the sleepy little station of Kalka around 5.30 AM in morning. From Kalka I had one of the most beautiful train journeys one can have. The journey, some 90-KM long, was done in a toy train. It was November 8, just a day before that railway line was about to complete its 100 years. We were travelling in the same train, which was supposed to make the historic journey next day, marking the hundred years of this wonderful gift of British India. ... read more
