The beating of the drums makes you forget your own heart beats for a while. And when you finally sense it pulsating inside you, both the beatings start working in perfect harmony. An intoxicating rhythm sets in your entire being as you witness a pre-mature spring unfold in front of your eyes. Fortunately, you do not go blind by this sudden riot of colours. At least, I didn’t. The occasion was the silver jubilee celebration of annual Surajkund Crafts Mela and the purpose of this visit was to witness the great Indian amalgamation of culture, cuisine and craft at one of the liveliest places in the land called Incredible India. True that everything good comes in small packages and when we relate it to tourism in India a ‘mini India’ comes alive at this otherwise detached ... read more

It took a little while, but finally here is a story on our weekend to Delhi! I’ll write a separate blog on my daily life advetures, otherwise it’s going to be too much to handle, both to write and read ;) We planned to go to Delhi during our second weekend, although untill the last moment there was still uncertainty about that Saturday being a holiday or not. Finally we were lucky and got the green light to GO  Holidays are a strange thing here, you can never ever be quite sure untill the very day itself, holidays can be cancelled, postponed or announced pretty much at random, which makes planning sometimes quite difficult! Anyways, we took a bus to Delhi, were we found a hotel in one of the main tourist areas. And yes ... read more

Well hello! My first blog from the subcontinent :) After waiting for about one month, last week we finally got our student visa (the Dutch Indian Ambassy Visa Office or whatever its called should be awarded for their lack of service), and last thursday we jumped onto a plane to Delhi :) We immediately took a bus, cab, bus, and tuktuk to our final destination, the campus of Haryana Agricultural University in Hisar! I should mention that Indian public transport is extremely cheap, and just as slow, 5-6 hours to travel 150 km... Our accomodation is quite nice, not very cosy, but at least we have our own bathroom with a normal toilet :) :) and a nice warm shower, which can now still be appreciated... The campus is nice, pretty green, spacious, and not as ... read more

Hi there , My name is Luisa Im 51 years old and Im spanish, married to a nice sweet German .We are looking for anyone who can give us some info about living conditions around Bawal, Bewari. My husband and I will be moving to Gurgaon in April, although his company is in Bawal, and because of the driving time we would like to go closer to his company , but from what we saw , (we just came back) is not the right area, specially for me , because I have to do the every day life, so the only other alternative is Gurgaon (which is my favorite ). Please , if someone out there can help, be kind and contact me. Until then, hasta la vista LUISA... read more

once again a short drive from delhi will take you to the heart of the kingdom that once belonged to the cricket playing nawabs of pataudi. an elegant palace and the grounds around it takes you back in time. we were staying at sher mahal and it was one of the largest rooms ive ever seen. it had a childrens room, a huge balcony and an enormous bathroom. it was june and it was humid and one had to spend the day indoors cooling oneself off. a walk around the gardens amidst roses, peacocks, camels and a mausoleum is all very interesting. we even saw the current residence of the royal family. being part of the neemrana group all meals are usually part of the package and theres an air of elegance and quality about the ... read more

Hi all I understand a lot of people who move in from US and other countries are very keen to know about the schools in Gurgaon. I put my the children at Excelsior American School, Gurgaon and am extremely happy with the progress they have made there. The ambiance is International and am happy with the academics and the soccer program there .Some people had recommended Pathways but I found the distance too much and did not find G D Goenka International . Excelsior , the main thing is my children love to go there and are in Grades IV and VII. I am a happy parent and would recommend the school to people moving in . It is located in Central Gurgaon so that makes it easier for the children..... Any one wants any more ... read more

CORRECTED December 13, 2010 Faridabad I spent the week teaching children at a local school for children who can't otherwise afford to go to the government schools. It is called Prakash Deep, meaning a drop of light (or ray of light), but it is informally called the Street Children's School, though not all children are "street children" but presumably so named because that is likely what they would become without a proper education. I had originally intended to work with the Women's Empowerment Program, but there the focus was simply working alongside women to make bags and baskets. I started to feel less enthusiastic about the objective of the program. Once I saw this children’s school and met the Founder, Savita Datt, I knew this was the program I wanted to be involved with. Savita has ... read more

Once I got outside the bubble that we were in on the work part (basically bouncing between very nice hotels for the conference, for dinner), I started to see another side of India that I had heard so much about: chaos, poverty, dirt, trash. But there were beautiful scenes mixed in, with a lot of human touches. We drove by bus from New Delhi/Gurgaon to Agra, and we started to see (from inside our safe tourist bus) things that make me incredibly grateful for all that I have. Inside New Delhi, people living in tents, children dirty and begging, coming up to the car windows, tapping on them, and begging for food, money, water, anything. I was driven back to New Delhi by myself in a car, and so I was a bit more up close ... read more

Christmas came and went in a flash and I thought that perhaps New Years Eve would too... assumption! When will I learn?!? Silly girl! It started off low key - as it does. We met a few people that Rob works with for drinks in one of the "swankier" pubs in the Defence Colony - love that word swanky, sounds like I've had a glass or two already. So by 'drinks' I mean the boys drank beer while us birds had some vinegar/wine/cough mixture crap ... sadly this was Inida's finest. After drinks we headed to one of the many Chinese restaurants in the market. The lads have taken to calling it "Mr Lawrences" although the sign outside says "Aka Saka". They explained that in their 'bachelor' days in Delhi, prior to the ladies joining them ... read more
