February 1, 2007 I had my first official India update call with Sandy, my boss, today. After we got the pleasantries and official India business out of the way, she dropped a bomb on me. She told me that there would soon be an IT reorganization announcement and as part of that reorg, I would be getting a new job and a new boss. She went on the say stuff about moving the bridge Relationship Managers back into the greater IT organization and she felt like I was burnt out on my old job which I’ve been doing for 6+ years and something about Charlie, my new boss, and EQM, my new project… But she might as well have been talking to a deaf mute. I only absorbed about 10% of what she said, and I ... read more

January 31, 2007 Many of you have asked about how I’m doing with the food. I’ve decided to try to be a vegetarian while I’m over here. I’ve always been disturbed by the thought of how my meat made its way to my plate. My self-deluded coping mechanism has always been that it just comes from the grocery store. Faye Wilcox and her stories about how her grandmother would twist a chicken’s neck off so she could fry some up, make me a little queasy. And then there is my well known stance on veal. Now I love the taste of veal, but I’ve taken a semi-hypocritical stand about not eating it because of the way they pen up those poor calves and cut their hamstrings so they can fatten them up... Tom thinks this is ... read more

January 28, 2007 - Part 2 It was late; I was exhausted; I was in desperate need of a bath. I tossed my bags from the day’s shopping on the floor and headed to the bathroom to start getting ready for bed. Those of you that know me well, know that I’m not exactly the world’s most observant person on the planet. So I have no I idea what made me look up. But there it was, a damned lizard! Shit! I’m not really afraid of lizards, but I wasn’t about to share my room with one... especially one that was every bit of 8 - 10 inches long. So I put my shoes back on and walked back to the front desk to report my unwanted guest. The guy at the reception desk called housekeeping ... read more

January 28, 2007 - Part 1 On Sunday morning, Michele arranged for Anirudh to take us shopping in some of the Delhi markets. Anirudh (Ani rhymes with sani from the first part of the word sanitation and rudh sounds like rude - hmm I wonder why the word sanitation came to mind).. Anyway Anirudh is a young man (merely 21 years old) who works the reception desk at The Palms. He and Michele are very close. She describes their relationship as brother/sister. Anirudh is quick to smile, and like all the employees of The Palms he is quick to offer any kind of assistance. Michele likes to take a local with her when she goes shopping because they can help ensure she gets a price closer to the local price instead of the Western price, which ... read more

Yesterday was a short day in the office due to the jet lag thing. I met all the key players at work (Sanjeev, Sandeep, Atul, and Abhijit), and we had a meeting with Ray since he would only be in the office that one day. The hotel is right across from the office, which is convenient since I don’t have to hassle with getting transportation to/from the office. On the other hand, I have to cross the street. To cross the street here is put your life in jeopardy. It is CRAZY! The traffic is swarming. And by traffic, I mean cars, trucks, rickshaws, bicycles, people walking, and the occasional cow. You have to wait for a slight break in the flow; then you dash to the middle of the road and wait for a slight ... read more

I have arrived. The trip was long, 30 ½ hours from initial takeoff to final landing, with 2-3 hour layovers in both Atlanta and Paris. On the flight from Paris to Delhi, our seats were in the upper deck of the 747, which was cool. The flights consisted of eating and sleeping and eating and sleeping. Once we landed, we stood in a long line for immigration. It was stiflingly hot and I was grateful for having arrived in winter. I might’ve passed out if it were summer. We gathered our bags (of course, I had more bags than Ray and Michele) and headed out of the terminal to find our driver. The first thing to strike me as I left the building was the smell. God help me, it about knocked me down. It was ... read more

Yesterday morning, Saturday morning, my cell phone rang at 9:30 a.m., waking me out of a sound sleep only to hear Sanjay's voice. Calling from his brother's house across the street, he said, "Come with me to Karnal. I'm leaving in 15 minutes." Sanjay and I talked about me coming with him to visit his hometown -- which was only a village when he was growing up there -- months ago, back in Canada. I was very excited to have the chance to visit a small town in India with someone who could show me what it's really like to live there. Not as a tourist. But I need more than 15 mintues from sound sleep to on the road! "It takes more than 15 mintues for the geezer to heat up the hot water!" I ... read more
