Hi All, I spent the national weeks holiday at the beginning of October in Shenzhen so I couldn't resist a trip over in to Hong Kong. The last time I was here, in July, it was unbelievable hot and I also managed to catch a cold!! How one does that in 36 degree heat I will never know!! What a difference a few months make. A lovely sun day with a lovely breeze coming in off the sea. I also saw the protests taking place. Quite odd to see hardly any traffic on Hong Kong Islands roads. At Central you could walk down the middle of the road. Shame I couldn't ride on the trams, never mind next time. Enjoy the photos Jah Bless... read more

What a beautiful day, our last day in Hong Kong. The weather has been perfect everyday of our 8 day visit. Mostly overcast with the sun peaking through at times, somewhat humid, but always 81 degrees ;-) So we decided to pick up lunch and eat it in the park. With one sandwich to share, Olive Oil Chips from Spain and a Sprite we headed up the 3 escalators to the park level and the street. Looking right for traffic (thank heavens it’s written on the street on every corner to “Look Right”), we head into the park…past fountains, the Clock Tower, the Tea Museum and around the lake with turtles basking in the sunlight on logs and rocks at the base of a waterfall. We picnicked on a bench in the park next to a ... read more

Walk of the Stars, Big Buddha, Stilt Houses and Pink Dolphins We decided on a guided tour today because we could cover so much more territory and wanted to go to Lantau Island. We got up early, headed to the metro, swiped our Octopus card and hopped on the MTR headed to Fortress Hill station where we needed to find the City Garden Hotel by 7:45. We exited at Forest Hill amid all the folks heading to their offices, followed signs, took a wrong turn, found the raised pedestrian walkway, asked a direction or two and found the hotel. A Grayline shuttle bus picked us up and took us to Kowloon where we joined a large bus full of people. Then, off to the Walk of the Stars along Victoria Harbor on Kowloon Island. This is ... read more

I knew I’d love Hong Kong, but I had no idea I’d be rapturously in love with the city by the end of my time there. Hong Kong is endlessly fascinating, it’s impossible to get bored here. Here are some of my favorite experiences in Hong Kong. Eating lots of street foods, it was really an amazing experience eating dimsum, big crepes, drinking milk tea and so much more. The foods were really outstanding. Taking the STAR FERRY across VICTORIA HARBOR, It’s the cheapest deal in town cross from Hong Kong to Kowloon by boat for just $3.40 HKD ($0.44 USD) and take in the absolute best view of the skyline. SHOPPING IN MONG KOK was one of my favorite neighborhoods to wander in Hong Kong. Here you’ll find a flower market, a street selling pet ... read more

Blog date 30th October. 28th Oct, last day in HK. After breakfast in Starbucks we decided to go underground!! We looked at it on our first day but it looked too busy but we decided we could not leave HK without trying out the Metro. As it turned out it was much easier than we thought. We purchased our tickets and boarded the train, very cheap and clean. No one is allowed to eat or drink on the Metro perhaps London should take note. After a quick change at Mong Kok we arrived at Diamond Hill metro station. They've only gone and built a shopping mall on top of the metro station! Following a quick visit to the shopping mall (not quick enough for Stuart) we visited Nan Lian Garden and Chi Lin Nunnery Buddhist Halls ... read more

Hong Kong: Haircut, Lee Gardens and Times Square This morning we left the hotel, walked around the block, down a short hill, across a busy street with construction, weaved our way through some barricades and found Hennessey Street and the Amour Salon. You may have noticed in the blog pictures, that with all this humidity my hair was getting a little long and wild ;-) Amour, is a cute little shop with about 6 chairs. All the hair products are L’Oreal. First I was shown a book with 4 prices from $290 Hong Kong dollars to $480 HKD- divide by 7 for US dollars. Next to each price was the level of person that I wanted to cut my hair. Lowest level and least money was Experience under 6 months. Then it went up from there ... read more

Hong Kong is amazing!!! ???? Stifling heat, towering buildings and a very odd variety of smells!!!!?? After a delayed flight we were all exhausted but still had the energy to find an authentic Chinese restaurant called Cheers! Then do some shopping at temple street market!!!? When we arrived at the hotel Abby refused to go in the lift so we took the escalator instead!! Two days later, she is the first one in the lift and the last one out!! Transport so far; Taxi to Heathrow courtesy of Steve Gidley- fantastic! Metro from airport to bus terminal, bus to hotel, Star Ferry to Hong Kong Island, taxi back to hotel, ferry to Lantau Isand, scary bus to Ngong Ping, cable car back down mountain, taxi! Monday- managed to wake up before 1pm today so trip to ... read more

Hong Kong: Victoria Peak Tram, Jackie Chan and Bamboo As we wandered though Hong Kong Park again, we decided to take advantage of the Victoria Peak Tram ride as part of the Big Red Bus package we bought. The Big Bus woman in her red and yellow shirt told us we should go RIGHT now because there was no line. Well, her definition of “no line” was a 30 minute wait;-) . The big red tram which was built in the early 1900’s would take us up the 1200 meter high Victoria Peak, named after Queen Victoria. About 50 people packed onto 2 cars for the 20 minute ride to the top. As we approached the observation tower, we were expecting incredible views, which we got, but amazingly we also found a huge shopping center/mall awaiting ... read more

Hong Kong: Champagne, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride & Laundry Last night ended with a sweet surprise. When we were returning from Hors d’oeuvres up in the lounge, we noticed a Marriott server ringing our doorbell. Yes, we have a doorbell on our room ;-) He had a beautiful setting of desserts, fresh strawberries with chocolate dips and champagne with glasses. Cope told him he had the wrong room as we hadn’t ordered anything. The server just smiled and handed me a card that said “Congratulations on your upcoming anniversary and your belated birthday. This lovely cart WAS for us! ;-) Marriott management had sent it up. NICE! I guess we’re going to have leisurely mornings in Hong Kong as virtually nothing opens before 9:30 or 10 however; they stay open till 11 or midnight. Definitely not ... read more

Where the heck are we? We have seen the Aleutian Islands, Japan’s cities of Kushiro, Kanazawa, Fukuoka and Nagasaki. Traveling north, we traveled to Jeju Island, Incheon, the DMZ and Seoul, South Korea. Across the Yellow Sea to Tianjin, Qingdao, Shanghai and now…after two days at sea we have woken up at 6am to watch the ship come into Victoria Harbor, Hong Kong (SAR) China. The Captain opened the doors to the bow (where passengers are not usually allowed) so we headed out of our cabin to take a look. They had coffee and “Hong Kong Star Ferry Rolls” on the deck waiting for us. We understand that the same rolls change names depending on the port. Hong Kong rolls become, Singapore rolls, become, Sydney rolls, etc. ;-) Nevertheless they were delicious. As we left the ... read more
